I've actually been reading various threads for some time so I thought it was about time to actually join in. I've been involved with hifi since the early 70s, when I got a Garrard SP25 with a Goldring cartridge, Sinclair 2000 amp and a pair of Dallas speakers - a pair of veneered chipboard boxes with EMI eliptical units. Cost me for the whole lot a whole £50. After leaving college, and therefore actually having some money, I progressed to a Garrard 86, Sinclair quadraphonic modules and 4 home made transmission lines using Wharfedale 10" twin cone units - one in each corner of the room. The years passed and the hifi has evolved through various components including turntables by Heybrook, Pink Triangle and Systemdek, arms by Rega, Linn, Helius and Mayware. Amps by Nad, Myst, Pioneer and NVA. CD players by Marantz,Teac and Sony and speakers by Heybrook, Decca, Jordan, Kef and Fostex with a large number of them being home built. Currently, for serious listening, I'm using a Dvico HDD player into a gatorised Caiman with Ultrasone headphones. And for TV and general listening there's an Onkyo DVD receiver with Kef Cresta speakers. I can also link the computer through a Creative external soundcard into the digital input of the Onkyo so that all my ripped cds and mp3 downloads can be played.
Musical tastes are probably best summed up by the last 3 cds I bought - a compilation album by Rick Wakeman, Heaven by Rebecca Ferguson and Talking Heads - Essential. Keyboards, female vocals and 20th century rock groups! I listen to Spotify free to decide whether I want to buy a particular cd but also to Jamendo where, while there's a lot of stuff I'm not interested in, there's also some really good ones too, eg. Heifervescence, Persson, Ear3 and Alexander Blu.
