View Full Version : Pets and hifi

How do your pets interact with your hifi? Do they like your music? Do they chew your speaker cables?

When not playing with cables our cats have taken to sleeping on the hifi cabinet, as the (rubbish iPad) picture shows - the ASBO-cat Stanley pretending to enjoy Andre Cluytens conducting the Berlin Phil in a Beethoven overture playing on the Transporter. The little racks I have for the few SACD/DVD-A discs I have form a nice little corner . . .:eyebrows:

Our 3 legged rescue Ahmed will occasionally pay attention, mainly if there are bees, birds, fireworks or other test recordings being played when he is sat with a confused but attentive look, instinct I would guess. Deep bass seems to draw attention, but other than that, music is of passing indifference.;)
Occasionally he will hear something in a piece that alerts him, rushes over to one of the main speakers, and stretches up to get closer to the Fountek ribbon tweeter. No idea what he is hearing at all but he looks most decidedly confused...:mental:
Otherwise no misbehaviour with the gear, although everything else is open season, which is I guess normal for a terrorist....

Ollie-paws always avoided the stereo, but Titchpuss once took to sitting under the big ATC's I remember. One evening, I arrived home, turned the system on, forgetting I had the volume well up. The resultant blast nearly took Titch out of his skin I remember. The following day, he came in, glared at the speakers and stalked as far from them as dignity would allow :)

Not mine, but a lovely pic from Denis Blackham of Skye-Mastering and another pair of ATC100A's -

I had problems with scratched speakers and plucked grilles - easily sorted with a house-brick, carrier bag and the nearest river... JOKE before all you puddy tat lovers have a coronary! ;)

Goldfish are allowed as pets in my house, but anything else I'm dubious of.

Dave this is bloody brilliant. One of my cats sits in front of the OBs and her ears start twitching and her head starts moving around. They all love the sound of any music we might be playing, but especially if we are palying something that has birds in the background, it's a song by Kate Bush. My cats go mental when they hear it:lol:.

..........or something with birds twittering on it...............at which point he goes totally bananas & won't stop for anything

Does there need to be a point to everything we do? In the long run we are all dead so it is all pointless. You may as well say 'I don't see the point in having a wife'. I don't, btw...;)

Hopefully you just wrote the above for some kind of comic effect, and don't honestly think it is valid to compare having a pet cat/dog to getting married!

I don't see the point in alcohol:cool: Don't drink it, don't keep it in the house.

My pets give me plenty of warms and happiness, and cost a lot less, not taking into account the devastation they leave in their wake.

Animals rule - in fact, in many ways I prefer them to people. Anyone who doesn't love animals, quite simply, has no soul...

Well. The acid test for the disbelievers:

Stuff your Dog and the missus/girlfriend into the boot of the car. Drive around for half an hour. Open the boot - NOW see who kisses you!

I for one apreciate your honesty. Some people are just not "pet people".
On the other hand, the only reason I have four dogs and three cats is because I really don't have room for six dogs and five cats!

I don't see the cat as a 'pet'. A Guinea Pig or a hamster, that is a 'pet'. The cat is a wild animal that you invite to live in your home. It has it's own agenda. They need to be free to come and go, cats that are imprisoned in the house go a bit weird and infantile as a consequence.

Funny thing is that some humans are prone to the same...:mental:

I liked the summary - Cats have pets called humans, humans have pets called dogs....;)

I don't know about anybody else but that sounds like a normal day at work to me...

On a different tack, our old Doberman who we sadly lost to lung cancer last year had a thing about Dave Gilmour.

She's on youtube 'singing' along to Wish you were here (Ailsa sings Pink Floyd).
On another occasion we were watching tv late at night - she'd taken herself off to bed - and we were watching one of the Secret Policeman's Ball concerts. Part way through Kate Bush did a song with Dave Gilmour backing her on stage, the dog suddenly trotted in and stood watching the TV from about a foot away with her ears pricked up - as soon as he'd finished playing she just turned and went back upstairs.

The only other time she showed any interest in any other musician was for an odd Pat Metheny track and only once, yet I could be up in the attic playing WYWH and she'd be singing along on the ground floor - normally with her front paws up on a chair in standard wolf pose.

I let the cat out last night about 0230 - he came back at 1130 this morning. Quite how he knew that I had a day off work and would be around to let him back in I have no idea. I certainly did not mention it to him.

My dog is a useful diagnostic tool. If she runs around whimpering when I switch my amp on, I know to switch it off again 'cos it's gone into oscillation. All I have to do now is work out why.
