View Full Version : Using iTunes to rip as ALAC

Dr. Robert
09-02-2012, 22:34
i was originaly ripping my cds as wav using EAC but i was then having to use seperate software to tag them then import them into itunes. any way i thought i'd give itunes a go as a ripper. i love it, put the cd in, rips it, now according to itunes using error correction, get cover art and track info. it still splits albums up for no reason but if your using remote it dont matter.
Also as a side note i could never rip street spirit from the bends, i thought my cd was shafted. itunes did it. dont believe the truth oasis would rip but no tagging program could ever get the tacks in order, an itunes rip did.
i get my mac mini tomorrow so i am very happy.:)

Any possibility that this could be written in Standard English? I cannot understand it.

Sorry...

I do wonder if the mods could write a 'sticky' for 'how to write clear English'.

I despair at the poor spellings and punctuation. Mistakes always happen of course, but the meaning must be clear.

Why do so many people not know how to spell 'separate' / 'accommodation' etc. Spellcheckers?

Why are there so many people not knowing how to use the possessive apostrophe?

DVD's/ CD's/ no, no, no.

CDs, DVDs please.

If I read such poor communication skills then I , perhaps unfortunately, immediately wonder whether the poster has any real knowledge of the subject being discussed - and usually dismiss them.

Please - no flames.

Hi, thanks; but that's not the point . I can't understand the post. I wish for clarification, that's all.

What's wrong in expressing oneself clearly?

I am not being unfriendly - just the reverse.

It could be, that somewhere in the post, was a good point. Let's all help him/ her to express it. I too have been impressed by the general good manners of the forum members, ( although the objective/ subjective discussions have often rekindled by ire). Let's keep it that way.

Hmm, isn't this a bit like writing I can't take this man seriously because he doesn't speak with a public school accent ?

Anyway, it doesn't really matter bout the details coz itunes is rubbish. :ner:

I too had trouble making sense of all this, but here's my take on it.

According to the thread title the OP is now using iTunes to rip CDs to ALAC files, whereas before he was using EAC to rip to WAV.
So before he was doing uncompressed rips, and now he's doing losslessly compressed rips.

There's a nonsense comment about iTunes doing error correction - yeah, right

There's a bit about tagging WAV files - bit of a moot point, this one, because whilst it's now apparently possible to tag WAV files, finding a media player that can read them is another thing altogether :eyebrows:

What's this bit about iTunes splitting albums up?
Sounds like a serious tagging issue to me.
When I tried iTunes as a ripper a long time ago I had similar issues.
There are errors with tags on almost every database out on t'interweb, so you'll need a program tool to correct the errors.

The rest of it revolves around having ripping issues with a couple of CDs - the only thing I'll guarantee about the rips is that they're not accurate.
However, if they play without glitching then that's fine. It's the best you'll get without buying another copy of the CDs.

Then the OP unzips his flies and pulls out his willy and proceeds to wave it around....

Sorry, got carried away there.
Then the OP makes comment about his Mac Mini arriving sometime soon, and is pleased at the prospect :D

I hope my reply did not convey that.

Thanks for the interpretation.
I thought I read somewhere that iTunes, for all its faults, IS bit perfect?

Slightly off topic I know but:

I recently ripped L Cohen's new and great album "Old Ideas" from FLAC to AIFF using Xact (I have a Mac). The loud passages were slightly distorted when played back via Audirvana+ (and iTunes) but not when played back via the Touch accessing the original FLAC file. Why should this be? Other music played back OK.

Thanks,

Dr Robert ...please join in.

iTunes is currently OK, after a bad patch around version 10.5.1. It might not do best even now with HDCDs and CDs with pre-emphasis - but at least it won't sound bad. [I don't actually know whether it sorts these or not, but some CDs sounded horrid with 10.5.1] If you really want to check out HDCDs and CDs with pre-emphasis to be sure of getting the best results you might want to check other rippers.

You can edit the tracks in iTunes, and that might solve your split problem. Select an album, then select the first track. Using a right click, then do Get Info then select the Info tab to find the track details. You can move through the tracks with Next and Previous. You can change the details in the text boxes.

iTunes will split up albums if the details differ from one track to the next. If you want to join them together, then try to make sure the album and artist details are consistent from one track to the next. Play around, you can get the hang of it quite quickly.

Also, if you want to rename the album, do it in the Album column. Click over the album name until it becomes editable, then change it. That way all the tracks will be changed, otherwise it's a bit of a pain having to copy and paste the same album details for each track.

These instructions work for the Mac version. I've not cross checked on the PC version - but I think they're similar.

Lastly, you can search for most things in iTunes - very quick, which, as you say, avoids the need for browsing.

Good luck with the Mac Mini - let us know how you get on.

Which version of iTunes? Have you upgraded to 10.5.3?

10.5.1 and a couple of other releases/minor updates around that one were totally rubbish.

Otherwise could you try converting to ALAC? I've done this and not noticed any problems.

There are fixes to allow iTunes to play FLAC, but I've not tried these myself.

I was slightly inebriated last night therefore my phrasing was some what lacking in syntactical accuracy. I apologise profusely and hope I have caused no more offence regarding the use of the English Language ;)

All I meant to say was I'm totally loving iTunes as a ripper and player. I can understand it has its critics but for me and where I am with using my PC as a transport it provides what I need.

Didn't realise this would create a two page thread.

I used iTunes for years before moving to FLAC and I had few problems, if kit does it for you then great. :)

OK, basically I agree with you, my own pet-hate being people who who insist that they have "intergrated" amplifiers, but there are many on this forum for whom English is a second language, a number of others who suffer from dyslexia, and many who had the misfortune to be educated in the sixties, seventies and eighties, who therefore had little exposure to correct teaching of English grammar. Should they be discouraged from posting? There wouldn't be much left to read!

Incidentally, you might want to check you own post for errors in grammar and punctuation...

Hi, thanks for the reply. I can usually tell if someone has dyslexia or other learning difficulties - but I agree, if we discouraged everyone who couldn't get an "A" at "A" level English then the cupboard would be bare.

I'm unaware of any SPaG errors in my original post - but please point them out. This is the problem of course, of criticising someone's English - one opens oneself up to the smallest criticism of one's own, (as I think someone else pointed out ).

Incidentally, did you mean "... you MAY want to check..."? ('May' for the future tense, 'might' for the past)? (Very pedantic of me - and meant in jest).

Let's get back to the real issues of SQ.

I completely agree with your statement, but this certain utility already has been mentioned in this thread: It’s called Fluke (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/28768/fluke).

Allow me just one question: Why do you prefer FLAC instead of ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Encoder)? FLAC doesn’t sound better or different than ALAC, and ALAC is fully supported by any piece of Apple hard- and software. And yes, ALAC has been released to the Public Domain and is a completely free, open specification.

Interesting you you should make this comment Werner.

I went into 'Angry of Hemel Hempstead' mode after an author of an article in HiFi+ marked ALAC down on SQ compared to other lossless formats without a word of explanation or justification.

Alan Sircom replied saying he was also puzzled and that he wished it had just been a typo given the amount of e-mails it had prompted.

Well, to comment on topic, i to prefer to use XLD or EAC or similar for ripping, but i am really fond of iTunes as a browser for my music collection. I does what it should, rarely messes things up and provides some very very good audio output when doped up on Amarra!

And to my ears, nothing beats AIFF as an audio carrier... (Yes, you may argue that WAV is just as good, but the damned shite dont carry tags?)

The mods and the rest of us don't have an issue with poor, keyboard or even (as you so rudely say) poor English, but we do with people just being rude.

:ner:

MMM.... I thought this was done and dusted. Why raise the stakes now?

When you say 'do one yourself', what do you mean?

I too cannot stand rudeness, and your (unnecessary) 'contribution' smacks of that.

If you would do me, and the other members of AoS a kindness, perhaps you could re-read the original post and my reply to it. The original poster gave a full apology with an explanation, and we all nodded our heads in sympathy as I'm sure we have all been there....!

I cannot see why if one asks for clarification then that upsets you so much. No better things to do on "Mothering Sunday"?

Again, I repeat, I do not think it unreasonable to ask for a standard of English such that the meaning(s) is/are clear, - and politeness is upheld - as I believe it was in this case. One of the great things about AoS compared with other forums is that generally speaking people are much more polite and helpful. There are always a few rogues and one must allow oneself not to be too upset by their behaviour.

Please may we now return to the subject?

Thanks,

Bonky.
