Hi from Wimbledon

Hi all

Just stumbled across the forum while trying to research a set of speaker brackets.

Been a HiFi buff since uni (mid 80s, Imperial College). What started out as a way of getting cheap vinyl turned into trips to the original Sound Org near London Bridge, day trips to Naim, and using most of my grant (remember those) to buy my first LP12.

Been through 2 Xerxes (what's the plural for Xerxes, Xerxii?) and now back to an LP12.

Through various random upgrades ended up with LP12, Geddon, Aro, Troika, Prefix, Nac82, Nat01 and 2x250s into Kans - so firmly in the 80s camp. Recently discovered Teddy Pardo and have one of his splendid HiCap clones and a simply wonderful TeddyDac.

No huge desire to upgrade, although there's a germ of a project to get hold of a pair of Saras and see how they work active.

So what sort of music tickles your fancy then?

Music - well the great thing about good hifi is that everything sounds better. The best thing about the squeezebox is internet radio - love Linn Radio (what a fantastic marketing tool). My other half spent a year as a teenager in Paris listening to NRJ - and was blown away by being able to listen in to that on the HiFi.

So basically everything from Rodalinda live from the Met on R3 (stunning) to digging out the 1980s Japan LPs the other evening with the kids to a C Lo Green CD (a Christmas prezzie from the kids - great when the music recommendations start coming back).

Hi Phil, welcome to AoS. I had a Xerxes and, overall, it was a mixed experience. When the top plate started to sag unrecoverably, I had no choice but to sell it. What made you move back to a Linn?

Re xerxes/LP12 it was more of a practical decision than anything else. I knew I liked the sound of an LP12.

When my 2nd xerxes started to sag I got fed up. My dealer (Infidelity) were having trouble supporting old xerxii so I thought about returning to an LP12 while I could still flog my xerxes for real money. The Linn was more available on the 2nd hand mkt. Was almost infinitely supportable and upgradable. At the time (2000 ish) vinyl looked like it was dying so I wanted a deck with good support going forward. Been totally happy with it.

I used to drink in the village many years back, when the Fire Stables was called - erm - can't recall at the moment. The Brewery Tap was still open then too. I have a preference for Young's bitter so Wimbledon Village was always a great place to go.
