Resonance/Vibration

Hi,
Two bits of my kit - the amp ( a Sugden A21a and a Linn CD player) have relatively loose top lids. If one taps them they resonate. Is this a 'bad trait'? I know many years ago it was recognised to be so and all kinds of fixes were advised -usually involving Blu-tak or Bostik pads, but have things changed since then?

If it is reckoned to be a 'bad thing', what would you advise?

Maybe put a heavy book on top just to see if you can hear any difference.

i often use books on my equipment and on a recent visit by music first audio i noticed their new baby ref has a lot of dynamat in side to dampen

Try some Nodost Pulsar points. I was amazed. Buy second hand and sell on if not impressed.

And there was Naim, for twenty years using cases that rang like bells most of the time. No wonder they made a huge marketing thing about the spring suspended circuuit boards on their top models :lol:

A tinny, resonant top plate is bad for you, not the equipment itself, where transistors are concerned anyway - IMO. Dynamat or similar to damp it out inside, or mass loading it from above, would be a great solution methinks :)

The Naim suspended boards are suspended at a much lower frequency than the 'ringy' cases.

If your equipment sounds better with a couple of books on, then stick some Dynamat to the underside of the lids.

Different products different solutions. I would try everything and anything and not rule anything out.

Cones, spikes, platforms, soft, hard etc, thinking outside the box will pay off usually.

Sounds Dead Steel pads are good. Work well under my turntable. Helps the bass and tightens everything up.

I use a few products from E-A-R Specialty Composites on my equipment, in particular Isodamp C-1002 and Isodamp SD. These are all excellent in reducing vibration and its effects. Another product that I will be trying soon in another part of my system is Sylomer from a German company. I believe that it's essential to reduce vibration as much as possible.
