Quad FM4.

Might think about getting a Quad FM4 tuner.

Sadly I don't have a good roof aerial to do the Quad justice.

Can someone recommend a good quality indoor aerial that will work OK with the Quad? I mostly listen to LBC 97.3

Hi Shane,

I can only give you my one experience but things didn't work out for me with a Quad FM4. I really wanted to try one and did, they're very well respected tuners. I too don't have a roof aerial so tried an indoor booster type that pluged into the mains and this just didn't pull in a strong enough signal.

Obviously all this depends on where you are in terms of reception, so variables apply.

I ended up with a Squeezebox touch that I just use for radio - far better option to my mind. Belgian trance anyone ?

There's a focused man. I got the booster aerial from my local Maplins and to be fair they took it back.

Remember "garbage in, garbage out..." The aerial signal MUST be good first. Then you can use ANY tuner. I like the FM4, but it will need a suitable aerial..

My experience was different from Ian's, i had an late FM4 (phono sockets) and from the word go it was brill with very good reception, but as others have said it all depends on the area, where i lived (Stepps,lanarkshire) was very open so it probably pulled quite a good signal from a basic T cable aerial, i later added a Magnum Dynalab ST2 and was a bit better still, go for it!! brilliant ergonomics makes it a joy to use.

Are you planning to come to the Scalford Show?
If so come and have a look at the indoor antenna that I'm taking with me.

It based on the John Linsley Hood Quad antenna, nothing to do with the Quad brand.
Basically it a square flat antenna that has been adapted for use on commercial FM broadcast (88-108) from one that's used by radio armateur for the 2m band.

It about a 1 metre sq and will be made with sticky back plastic and tin foil.

Some tuners that were built in the 70's had the ability to suck a signal out of the air with little more than a paper clip stuck in the aerial socket & blow a Quad FM4 into the weeds in terms of gain and sound quality.

Have always read very good things about the FM4. I've heard one once, and the vocals were very good.

I used to have an Accuphase T101. Great tuner. Dunno how it compares to the FM4 in sensitivity, but our original analogue aerial was in the loft, so I just bought an FM jobbie from Maplin for about 15 quid and swapped it over. Worked a treat. If you still have your analogue tv aerial up and are in a good signal area, it'll probably work fine I'd have thought.

The Accuphase and Yamaha CT7000 tuners were two of the best tuners ever made for radio performance, let alone sound quality and ANY Quad tuner would struggle to pick up what these two could without a decent clean signal. An analogue TV aerial may well just work, so well worth trying.

LBC is also my favourite radio station and I've been tuning in for over 30 years. If only they'd dump Nick Ferrari.......

But, audio quality from LBC is utterly atrocious and has been for many years. Fortunately this doesn't really matter given this is talk radio. So, while the FM4 likes a decent roof ariel, you can probably get useable results using indoor if you are based in London and signal strength is good. More of a problem are the morons broadcasting illegally close to the 97.3 frequency.

So Shane, you'll be needing a tuner with excellent selectivity as well as the ability to make the most of a weak(ish) signal. I'd be looking at Japanese or American models from the 70's if I were you.
