the finest bit of Engrish I've read all day,

just the thing for those looking for 'better bass extension, smooth mellow voice, bile taste very strong, one hundred and tire'.

'tone is neutral, but the kind touch of sweet, crisp, reminiscent of the little girl's laughter. Girls with his very nice to listen to the crisp'.

not intended to be racist or controversial in any way, the advert just gave me a chuckle.

I liked "the famous horseshoe Andean original principle circuit"

Horseshoes from the Andes eh? Must be good!

When I read 'Matisse' I got excited because we had Matisse back in the 80's. It was a beautifully crafted, no holds barred, megabuck (or Pound) tube pre-amp but this isn't it by any stretch..

Exactly what I thought Dave!

Great minds etc.

What about Tesserac ?

That name makes me think of grey coloured, half width mono power amps.

My brain's gone foggy on this one, except the name and it was from the same era as Matisse. I seem to recall slabs of coppr somewhere but beyond that..

We had the Matisse pre on demo for a while - two boxes, beautifully crafted.

Yup - and a very very sterile sound! Clean as a penny whistle - and just about as musical. :eyebrows:

Hmm.me too - didn't they have a blue front panel?

Was it the Matisse pre that had a clear perspex lid and a stepped volume control? - with the steps about 5dB apart  - that's what it sounded like to me, anyway. Almost totally useless!

... or maybe that was another pre from the same era?

That description seems to ring a bell

I think there was a review of a blue one in HFN/RR.
The one with the perspex lid wasn't the Matisse, though Jerry. But I can't, for the life of me remember the name of that one. - It'll come to me.

Nope - I'm sure I wasn't thinking of that one ....

Hmm ... yeah, maybe you're right. Did the Klynes have stepped volume controls?

The Matisse came in 2 chassis & they each had a wooden sleeve. It did have big steps on the volume control though - maybe you saw a 'special' done up with a glass lid for a show or something?
I've got something about it somewhere, I'll find it & scan it.

Just found a review in Oct '88 HFN/RR of the Matisse by KK & MC. KK's one had very coarse steps in the volume controls while MC's came from the 2nd production batch & it wasn't so bad, but the company said they would be replacing controls with something that was much more finely controllable.
Scan to follow.....

I've got something on the Klyne, but that'll have to wait till tonight now.

Aha - yes, could be. So maybe my ageing brain wasn't playing tricks after all! :D

The phonostage in the Kylne pre-amps are fabulous but sadly by today's standards the linestages are in my experience coloured and lack transparency, which is a shame as the pres are a joy to use and look at.

I am talking about the early 90's Klynes by the way. Back then I would have loved to have owned one but having played around with a few a couple of years ago I was very disappointed with what I heard re the linestage.
