Hi Jostber, I have seen the Martin T thread but I have been waiting for the Marco review, since before xmas..
Where is the review Marco?
I reckon the platter is phenomenal and he can't stop listening long enough to write his thoughts down..... :)
Would love to hear Marco's thoughts/comments especially as he is using a differnet arm and cart combo
I should be getting the funk firms platter and am thinking of their FX1200 arm aswell........... I will post a review when I do get them...
I think they look super sexy together and should also sound great as Arthur from the funk firm has always made tip top componants and has 30+ years of reputation to back that up!

Hi John, Very envious if you do as I too would love to go with this combo when funds permit. The fact their arm retains the Techie vta is a big plus in my books as the Techie 'on the fly' vta is a gem ! Really lookin forward to your review :D

Hi robbie gong, like you I think the techy's vta adjustment is great and I've never had a problem with the techy arm and have always liked it's qualities... especially the timing. My main gripe has been the harsh sound of the arm tube, which I've tried damping with heatshrink and it has solved it to some degree but won't be as elegant as the funk firm's solution, which I have no doubt will sound better than my poxy heatshrink.

I hear you on all counts John. It's that slightly harsh / shouty sound that is my only gripe. I believe an arm like the Funk and a platter upgrade ie: Mike New or Funk should eradicate those negatives albeit not cheaply, hence why it hasn't happened my end as yet :eyebrows:
Hi Phil. The Funk Firm platter is a no-brainer and one of the best upgrades you could go for. However, if you don't have an upgraded bearing I would go for that first.

thanks for the advice so after research at the moment it seems the bearing which i think only MN does and it seems to get great reviews followed by the funk firm platter which again have only read great reviews of (if the acromat is anything to go by then I agree with Martin its a no brainer)

John Diamond please expand on the FX 1200 arm, has it been released ? if so how come I havent read any reviews ? heard about them coming a while back, but never heard anymore. have you heard one ? anyone shed any light on this.
TRhe FX1200 arm is SME price isn't it? That would explain the lack of takers, no matter how good the new arm tube is...

Martin, do you no longer hold the Mike New platter in any order of esteem??? I bought Marco's MN platter and I am very pleased with it from the engineering and class of manufacture to its performance. I strongly believe that to get the very best performance of the MN platter it obviously has to be used with Mike's bearing which is mandatory (which I bought first) I have also fitted the MN base plate and unlike your's which is Araldited (I was going to do this myself but thought long term of dismantling probs) I secured the MN bearing to the MN BBP by drilling three additional holes into the bearing flange, secured to the BBP, and then secured the bearing plus base plate to the Techy by using Mike's threaded screw bolts. All this has been bolted and gasketed down to the body pan proper (which is NOT flat) by the five bolts provided but I have substituted the 5 nuts with flanged self locking nuts, military/aerospace spec (my wife, although retired still has access to her old department thus enabling me to beg for the necessary parts required :)).
I have inspected the Funk platter, and although well made and more than likely to be fiddly to manufacture cannot, by me, have the same quality of manufacture as the MN platter or the initial raw material costs. What costing is there on the appropriate and relevant size of medical grade acrylic compared to machined aliminium plus copper to a very high tolerance and polish, both platters cost more alike do they not? I know you have based your preference on what you hear and like and I have respect for that but for me the MN platter is for me, allowing wider scope for mat etc experimenting.... what I'm trying to arrive at is why are you now dumping or totally ignoring on the Mike New platter which your past posts gave the impression was the one to get?
I do realise that there is progress and can imagine the day when the Funk platter is no longer top cocky of the roost?
By your promotion of the Funk, to the exclusion of all else, gives a narrow perspective of what is available at the extreme, viz; the entire MN mods properly implemented down to the cost effective good mods provided by Vantage Audio for example and of course those of the Funk.
Please do not take the above as a tirade of any shape but merely my thoughts and musings on the subject.
Respect:)
Ron

Dave, yup, the FXR arm does not come cheap even the arm mod to the stock Techy arm pans out near mega! I guess there will always be takers and shakers  Dave Price gave the FXR a very good write up in HFW saying it was better than a SME V and I guess this was the green light to ask for more than a fist full of dollars;) Theres a large industry out there who improve (huh?) on what the original manufacturer came up with from the Sound Organisation LP12 table in the late 70s (remember those, they sold by the tanker loads?) to the big bucks creations and thinking of today.... struth, DaveO, I'm beginning to think like you mate :D
Cheers mate

Martin, do you no longer hold the Mike New platter in any order of esteem???
No, not at all Ron and I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I liked the Mike New platter a lot and it isn't in any way diminished just because I've moved on. His engineering prowess is unquestioned and the platter, bearing and base plate are all excellent products. I was rather thinking about the high shipping cost and import duty for anything brought in from Australia and how that brings it up against the Funk platter in terms of price. That isn't Mike's fault, but it's a fact of life with importing any item.
I'd go further and say it's a choice dependent largely on your system capabilities. If you run a system with smaller speakers then the MN platter will be ideal because of its weighty bass output.
I have been communicating with Mike about it in an open way and he is ok with my decision and my reasons why. After all, I'm still using and recommending his superb bearing and base plate.
I know you have based your preference on what you hear and like
That's it exactly. I have weighed in with my vote and it's purely personal - what else could it be? Anyone reading this thread is being given many different recommendations and it is for them to weigh up the factors that might best relate to their system and sound preferences.

Haven't seen any reviews either, thought someone would have reviewed it. Might I become the first to review, or have I just jinxed myself???
I never been first in anything, except losing...... :)
+1. Nicely put, Martin. I shall add my own thoughts later :)

+1 for the mike new bearing - a fantastic product that has transfered my techy to another level of performance.
