PMC Twenty.23s

Dave - do you mean expensive and not good value or expensive but great speakers ? What similar sounding alternatives would you short list ?

I don't have any direct experience of the PMC Twenty.23s but I do run a pair of PB1is and have heard OB1is and Fact.8s.
The PB1is and OB1is were similar in presentation with the PB1is being very significantly better IMHO - clarity, separation, control - and so they should be for the extra dosh.
Separately, I heard the Fact.8s through the same amps as my own (EAR valve 868/890) when auditioniong DACs at Hifi Sound in Stockton. As I remember, I found them bright, almost harsh in comparison, a bit light in the lower registers, maybe not as well controlled as my own PB1is. I eventually swapped to using some Kudos C30s, which were a more pleasant experience IMHO.
What I would draw from my (albeit limited) experience is that the PMC speaker ranges have different presentations. I suspect that I would be happy to move up to the EB1is or IB2s but I would treat the Twenty series with caution.
I would strongly recommend a home audition if at all possible. Room interaction is important and well as the rest of your chain.

I head the .23s and .22s I believe at a recent Dealer Open evening, in a 5.1 surround sound setup with the new Bryston Processor. To be honest, It sounded a bit matter of fact, but then I am not the biggest fan of the PMC range.
for around £2k, I would demo the Rega RS7 and Kef R700/R900.
