Record weight

I'd like to know if they're is any danger of damaging the bearings if i leave my record weight on the turntable all the time :scratch:

Should be okay to leave it on but having said that, I always take my weight off (to remove the record). :)

I take mine off, but with some of the aftermarket bearings being so well engineered it probably is okay. Though to be honest, best take off then no damage will incur. One less thing to worry about. :D

If you have a bearing with a plastic thrust pad and a heavy weight there's every chance it'll make an impression over the term. Unless your bearing is incredibly sensitive to vertical displacement however this is unlikely to make any difference to how it sounds.


I'm not a fan of heavy record weights on decks that aren't designed for them, all they really do is increase and couple bearing noise. A good screw down or magnetic clamp is a far better solution IMHO.

Not that problem, but I have several records w/ cracks by the spindle hole from pressure - And I didn't bear down or anything, just made sure there was contact. I use an Orsonic I got for $25 a zillion years ago. For a while I unscrewed the pressure button and removed the screw, but now I just use a very light touch.

Thanks for the replys,my tt is a stock SL-1200,and the weight is a Rek-O-Kut wich weight 1 pound,i was just asking because i like the way it looks with the record weight on,but i guess i should leave it off,just to be on the safe side :)
