Hi, A friend of mine bought an Audio Innovations 200 pre- and power amp. His power amp has 7 tubes, but all the tubes are unlabelled. He would like to know is it mk2; mk3 or mk4. As far as know, the mk1 has 6 tubes only. On the back side, there is a label: "Serial No. 20108". Any help is appreciated, Thanks, János PS.: Which version was the best one?

what is sure is that the 4 power valves just in front of the output transformers are el84s. however, depending on whether the amp is an Mk II, III or IV the other 3 tubes should be as follows:
- Mk II> the lone valve at the left hand back corner is an ecc82, the 2 other tubes in front of the power valves are ecc88s
- Mk III> the lone valve at the left hand back corner is an ecc83, the 2 other tubes in front of the power valves are ecc82s
- Mk IV> all the tubes apart from the power valves are ecc83s.
thus, this specific S200 can be any of the above but the Mk I, and i am afraid no one can tell you today which version the amp you ask about is even with the S/N provided... :(
btw, the Mk II was regarded as 'the best' of the 4 versions.
good luck, mate

What about Guy at Puresound? Didn't he design some of their amps?

i'm afraid he can do nothing more in the absence of the valves' true identity than advise to determine somehow what tubes exactly they are in - and then it's easy ;) but the S/N shall not be a clue, mind you, with some 20 years passed... :(

The early 200 was a misguided attempt (I was not involved) to make a pentode amp without nfb. This was very fast & clear but with (unsurprisingly) poor load tolerance & feeble bass. It had 4 x EL84 and 2 x PCC88 preceding those.

A modified version with nfb and extra pcb carrying a further valve was introduced.
The valve on the pcb (back left corner) was an ECC82, the two in front were ECC88.

The Mk2 (printed on the front panel) when it came had nfb and 3 valves in front of the 4 EL84's. These 3 front valves were all ECC82's.

I do have schematics of each version.

Hello! Can I have a copy of audio innovations 200 mkII schematics?
Not free, of course! :D
Thanks. :)

...Fulvio, I appreciate your English may not be great, but when you registered you were asked to post in the Welcome section BEFORE posting anywhere else... I am sure you will understand that AoS is a community of real enthusiasts and not just somewhere to trade.

Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you and your system and music choices on your next visit - thanks. :)

Yes, you have right.:steam:
Sorry, I repair immediately, and sorry also for my poor English!
I'm an DY HI-FI entusiast from 20 years.
BlueNote Koala CD player, 50+50W AB class amplifier (MPC-E from Ing. Gigi Marzullo project, CHF Italian DYer Issue), FET buffer "BUFFET" from the same source, also for the GLAS'T 2 ways close cabinet loudspeakers, Diego Nardi project (Snell KII closely parents). This is my system. Sounding in a 6x5 mtrs not treated listening room.
Also sperimentewd, in the past, some tubes projects, like 2A3 SE ampli, totem pole 6SN7 tube preampli, Zanden clone preampli.
That's all.
I like your forum because serious, like ours, in Italy; COSTRUIRE HI-FI FORUM.
Many compliments and sorry again.

Send me an email at info@puresound.info

I remember Diego Nardi. I had a very nice traditional evening meal in his mother's kitchen in Milano. Shaving Parmesan off the block, proper risotto etc. Nom nom.

If you're doing the Manchester show later this year (where were you last year?) you can come to ours on the way back and have that, if you want - and Panna Cotta, too, for afters! ;)

The problem with that show now is that all of the supporting shops are Sevenoaks branches and are doing less serious hifi than they were. It makes it harder to justify doing the show if the shops can't follow up the leads as well as they did.

Well, if you're doing the show, pop by and stay over as usual. Del and I always enjoy your company

I was fairly close by on boxing day, walking on Raw Edge & enjoying beers in the Bickerton Poacher afterwards.
