Hi all.

Due to changes in my system my refubished and newly serviced/re-built Glenn Croft Quad II amplifiers are up for grabs.

The Quad II's were originally converted by Glenn Croft in the mid 90's. I bought them from Paul of Classique Sounds in May last year and August I sent them back to Glenn for a full service. Whilst they were there he totally re-built them using his very latest knowledge of the Quad II's power regulation.

These amps have been professionally re-sprayed in a lucious silver and look absolutely gorgeous with only a few scratches here and there but nothing you can really notice, see pics.

Glenn has done such an amazing job on how these sound. They sound nothing like a stock set of original Quad II's, these are fast, dynamic with tight bass and georgeously fluid mids/highs as you would expect from any high end valve amplifier should be.

I love my amps to sound dynamic with my taste in music which is varied from rock, funk, dance and classical.

In addition to the under-the-bonnet re-build Glenn fitted new fuse holders, IEC sockets, power switches, RCA input sockets and new speaker binding posts to each amp.

When I first got the amps they were running the new Gold Lion KT88's which sounded great but I just had to hear the 'king of output valves' the GEC KT88's. With further upgrades from Mullard to GEC the whole valve comliment of both amps boast NOS valves manufactured from the early to late 1960's.

Here is what we have in both amplifiers:-

x2 Mullard 85A2 - NOS - From Langrex
x2 A1834 6AS7G (Military spec) - NOS - From Langrex
x2 Brimar ECC807 - NOS - From Glenn and Langrex
x4 GEC CV4085's (Military spec) - NOS - From Langrex
x4 GEC KT88's - Matching quad, bought from Marco and tested by Anthony at Tube Distinctions.

KT88 TEST FIGURES

TESTED ON RECENTLY CALIBRATED AVO 163 VALVE TESTER

PLATE/ANODE VOLTAGE =250V. SCREEN/GRID 2 =250V. NEG GRID VOLTAGE SET = -20 [MINUS 20]
VALVE 1 PLATE CURRENT = 73MA / 7.5MA/V
VALVE 2 PLATE CURRENT = 76MA / 8MA/V
BOTH VALVES HAVE BEEN TESTED AND CLEARED FOR INTERNAL SHORTS.
HEATER TO CATHODE INSULATION MEASURED AT LEAST 25 MEG OHM ON ALL 4 VALVES.

PLATE/ANODE VOLTAGE =250V. SCREEN/GRID 2 =250V. NEG GRID VOLTAGE SET = -20 [MINUS 20]
VALVE 3 PLATE CURRENT = 58MA / 6.5MA/V.
VALVE 4 PLATE CURRENT = 60MA / 7MA/V .
BOTH VALVES HAVE BEEN TESTED AND CLEARED FOR INTERNAL SHORTS.
HEATER TO CATHODE INSULATION MEASURED AT LEAST 25 MEG OHM ON ALL 4 VALVES.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you much about the valves but the valve set for both amplifiers cost me a small fortune as they are so much in demand especially the GEC ones.

With this sale I will also include some extra valves which are:

x2 Mullard 85A2's
x1 Brimar ECC807

If you want something really special and unique you can't go wrong with these. Both amps have had light use since they came back from Glenn and are ready to be used for another 50+ years.

These have been made to run the KT88's conservitavely maintaining extra reliability thus increasing their life running them at the same heater current as the KT66's. They push out 20wpc.

When I got the amps I asked Glenn about the transformers on these amps and about posts on the internet saying that modified Quad II's can go in to melt down. Well, Glenns answer to this was that the proof is in the pudding because they are still going strong after all these years. Glenn also said that when they are modified properly (by himself) they have plenty of power left in reserve. The original versions ran in class A and so do these so nothing has changed there.

They run no warmer than original stock specification.

So please rest assured that these are for using and not just for looking at. You can use them and look at them... Bonus! In other words they are ready for long hawl... Again!

Price wise I'm looking for very near to £1699 with all valves including the extras.

If you want to use KT88's of your own choice then they would be £1350.

Delivery is fine but pick up is recommended. Please let me know your location for an accurate price.

Overseas buyers welcome, again please let me know your location for an accurate price.

Demo is very welcome.

Note - The GEC KT88's in this sale have no stickers as the valves shown were my other set of which are no longer available.

Cheers
Joe

Ah, I see what those "extra" two valves are - the regulated supply that's hidden inside mine. The choke's gone and I don't know enough to work out what Glenn's done in place of it..

All the best for the sale. The stock ones are delightful IMO. Race tuned ones done with love and care as yours have been are rare and something very special :) :respect:

Cheers Mark.

Yeah, I use a Sony SLR which is Minolta so I have plenty of lenses to choose from as far back as the mid 1980's all of which have magnificent optics compared to some of today's lenses.

I can't believe that no-one has bought these gorgeous amps yet... I've heard them and can confirm that they sound superb!

These are definitely the best Quad IIs I've heard, bar none, and aren't at all 'pipe & slippers', like the stock ones sound. These are very open, dynamic and musically expressive amps, which can suck you into the music for hours on end and put a big smile on your face.

So, come on folks, don't miss out and give these beautiful amps a new loving home!

Marco.

I already have Quad II's, 22, FM2+Quad decoder, all in good condition, cost me £10, but that was a long time ago.

If I was buying those modified Quad II's, would like to have the circuit diagram.

Not sure if Glenn would let those go.
