Better Class D amp

My last experince of Class D amps was a few years ago in the "Sonic Impact" modding cray days. Jerry (Covenant) very kindly sent me one of these about18 months ago :-

I put it to one side as I had moved on to Gainclones and then a DIY Pass F2 which is really good.

I came across it the other day and thought I would fire it up. The TA2024 Sonic Impact amps (Trends and others) are really only good for a few watts before the distortion levels rise alarmingly.

These boards are said to be 100W per channel (depending on PS used and at 4 Ohm 10% distortion!) they take from 10v - 36vdc. I have tried 12v battery, 34v Linear and 15v linear supplies. An old Maplin 15v 3A supply seems to do the trick with my 96dB horns. I only need a couple of watts.

I have to say that these are a totally different beast to the flea powered amps. There are a few very simple mods (see DIYaudio thread) required to get the best out of them. For the money (if of course you have to buy one :lol:) is very silly money for very good return (IMO of course)

Well, the 'flea-powered' amps vary greatly among themselves.

If all you've heard is the old TA2024 Sonic Impact then you've a mega-big surprise in store if you try a TA2020 amp. ;) The sheer transparency, clarity and control can be a real ear-opener.

I've got a Muse TA2020 still boxed up from its last loaner mission. (The recipient bought a Mini-T amp straight away after hearing it!). I'm happy to pop it in the post if you'd like to try it. :) Just cost you a few £squid for the postage.

I put one of these together some while back with a 24v linear supply, and as you say it sounds non too shabby with a few mods. Currently playing into small tannoys, very enjoyable and certainly value for the money.

That looks to be the one. I see you replaced the inductors (and other bits)

Jerry. I have had several TA2024's, an Autocostruire 2020 and a Teac ALP700
(not sure which chip this is)
