So here,s a challenge(or not)
This might be a long post, but I need to explain a few things first.
At the moment I play my music from my pc and have ripped to apple lossless, wma lossless, flac, wav mp3,ots, etc etc and even sometimes play cds from the pc as well.

In the living room I have a morgan audio amplifier(soon to be joined by a matching power amp) and Nakamichi cd player/ AR turntable all going in to Rogers export monitors.
On the pc I use many different music programs and stream the music downstairs via a "Logitech wireless system for pc" which I believe uses bluetooth. This plugs in by usb to the pc and streams ANYTHING that is coming out of my sound card and from any music software or format. I do get dropout now and again, but only when my wife uses the microwave! But not enough to bother me. The receiver plugs into the amp's aux and there is a remote that does basic functions like pause, volume, next track, but that’s about it. What I usually do is set up a playlist on the pc for different occasions and different genres and hit the play button and go downstairs to listen. I obviously have many playlists set up and sometime I just shuffle the whole library. Because its streaming whatever is going through my soundcard I don’t have any probs with drm or such like and I have no interest in sitting in my living room scrolling through music to play from a squeezebox or any other server, as I already have it all set up upstairs… and that’s the way I like it.
Now the problem: The receiver only outputs via rca and Im planning on getting a Beresford dac which doesent have rca inputs.!! Stan has already told me that dacs with rca inputs can be very expensive and affordability is a major factor for me.All my hi fi was bought in better days.
Question is: Is there a way to connect to an optical or spdif from the rca outs? I can seem to find any adapters that do it without another box in the way.
It seems to me that there must be some kind of dac inside my receiver and as technically changing a plug is a challenge for me so is there anyone out there who can maybe adapt this receiver for me or come up with any suggestions?Obviously Logitech didn’t want to put a digital output on this unit at its price point, but Im sure its got to be possible.
I know a lot of people will say squeezebox/sonos etc….but none of its features interest me(or its price) and if I can just stream from my pc through a dac without having to worry about networks, servers, touchscreens, and yet another remote Ill be happy. I just want to keep it simple…. I have 2 of these so Ill happily send one to the lucky person who can take up the challenge…any offers?
Ill be surprised if someone hasn’t already thought of this…imagine a dac with built in receiver. I did mention it to Stan but I think he is busy with other things.
Thanks in advance

No.

Chord Electronics do a DAC called the Chordette - it costs around the £400 mark - and it can accept Bluetooth transmitted music with no bandwidth restrictions up to 24/96.
You'd also need to get a generic Bluetooth dongle in order to connect your laptop (assuming that your doesn't have built in Bluetooth).

To be honest, if I were you I'd look at stuff like the Squeezebox Touch - I've been running Squeezebox for 5 or 6 years now, and I'm one very happy user of the system :)

You can probably use a SPDIF to RCA converter:

Thanks for the help so far,but I dont see any suitable converter on that site.
There is a spdf to toslink converter, but thats not what I need as thats digital to digital...
What I have is standard rca(2 phono plugs out)receiver... and I need to find a way to input/convert so I can plug them into a digital either coax or toslink input on the dac...
thanks anyway

Sorry, wrong link. You might check with Stan if you could use something like this Digital Audio to Analog Audio Converter:

What you are looking for is an analogue to digital converter or ADC.
BUT why would you do that at the delivery point?
The signal is digital before it hits your transmitter, so it is either being converted at the transmitter to analogue and transmitted or the receiver is doing the conversion on the incoming digital.

seoirse2002
16-01-2012, 12:17
Exactly!!
What happens is that its obviously digital being sent from the soundcard via the transmitter....then it hits the receiver....so the receiver is "receiving" a digital signal which is then output via 2 phono sockets...so I just attach some interconnects and plug them in to my amps aux socket....
Problem is.....Im sure if I can put the signal from my receiver through a caiman or the like,it will greatly enhance my sound(or so Im told) and I can also use said dac with my cd player(s) hence I need a way to connect from rca to digital.....
All my music is organised on my pc......I dont want a squeezbox or a sonos or any of their features, costs or cons... I simply want to try to improve what I already have...the power to play anything I want on any program I choose and in any format I choose without restriction imposed by s/box,sonos, network, etc.
It seems to me that I am digital all the way from the pc to this little receivers output rca's....so what is inside the receiver box? and why couldent they have put toslink or spdif output?......Im sure its all about the money,as usual
The only idea I have come up with so far is this.....rca male to female minijack adapter.....then male minijack to toslink lead and into the dac..... all very obvious...
But I thought this was the art of sound diy forum?
Someone must have a better idea? Someone must have enough technical knowledge to take my receiver apart and put an spdif or toslink output in/on there....

Wrong. Your RCAs are analogue, so the digital signal is converted in that receiver box by god knows what.
You have a system with an inbuilt DAC at the receiver end, and which also returns remote operations back down the line to the player? You now want to figure a way to install a better DAC on that receiver, and be able to use the remote? Like they say in Ireland when you ask the way to someplace, "I wouldn't start from here..."

Unless someone on here has taken one of these things apart prior to it being binned, I doubt you will get the answer you seek, but you could always try Logitech. I would not hold my breath.
To be sure to be sure I wouldn't start from here...

PS - I suggest when it comes to upgrading, you consider total replacement of the Logitech system so that what you seek is possible.

seoirse2002
16-01-2012, 18:29
Yea, I know youre right....but Im trying to be as simple as poss and was hoping that someone could figure it out...if Im getting a good signal from the pc to my equipment with this little (scorned on by most) receiver and I would like to improve the sound by adding a dac(caiman or otherwise) whats wrong with that? And in fact if it does all I want it to do,whats wrong with that?
Ok...so it doesent have a little screen and a server so I cant collect all my music together and sit with my iphone or remote scrolling through my music...
For what? I have all my music together,by genre and playlists and if I want to be surprised I can shuffle the whole library and listen to that....and Im not tied to any formats, servers, blah blah....if my sound card plays it....I can stream it and have been happy doing that until now.AND I dont need to utilise my network and can put these receivers all over the house
Apart from its lack of bells, whistles and other candy....can someone explain to me why a (for example) squeezbox will do what I want better?....thats a no brainer because there are things it wont do for me......If anyone can give me a good technical reason why I shouldent try to put it through a dac Ill be happy to bin it providing that the reason isnt going to cost me money for features I dont want, but more importantly need.
Ill be happy to send this little item to anyone to check it out and maybe open it up....Im sure the remote part is a seperate to the dac inside it....
Im constantly seeing talk of chips/soldering/resisters here so someone must be willing and able to give it a shot as my knowledge of chips is confined to what comes with fish....

Hi George,

The way your Logitec is delivering an analogue signal to your amplifier is currently something like this:

Digital audiuo file converted to analogue by your soundcard -> analogue signal from soundcard converted to digital by your 'transmitter' and sent via bluetooth to your 'receiver' -> digital signal converted to analogue by your receiver -> amplifier.

The only way to add a Caiman to this would be to then add the following steps:

analogue form 'receiver' converted to digital by some other device -> digital converted to analogue by the Caiman -> amplifier

that's a lot of converting back and forth between digital and analogue - all with the potential of adding jitter or otherwise compromising the sound quality, whereas with the squeezebox and all other suggestions there would be just the single conversion from digital to analogue done by the Caiman.

bobbasrah

Digital audiuo file converted to analogue by your soundcard -> analogue signal from soundcard converted to digital by your 'transmitter' and sent via bluetooth to your 'receiver' -> digital signal converted to analogue by your receiver -> amplifier.

Not sure that the first A/D step is likely Keith, but you are absolutely correct that these conversion steps are totally undesirable.:(
What is wanted here is to tap off the digital audio signal prior to the existing DAC and after the superimposed (?) control signals at the receiver to send to another DAC, which would require a stripdown, research (assuming the device is not bespoke) and a fair bit of modification to the existing receiver to work, if indeed any mods would fit.
Add in the two way comms of the control system for the remote, it is no simple DIY task IMHO.
The equiment works well and fulfills current expectations and requirements. Perhaps Logitech will bring out a further version in due course which may do what is required....

Looks like we are getting somewhere and I thank anyone who is pondering this situation,as the obvious benefits,if it worked properly, can be clearly seen.
i.e. no need for network, dedicated server, and most of all, ability to play any music format direct from sound card from any chosen music software....but it is not a new idea, and chord already have a bluetooth streamer that works in a similar way,but without remote, and it has a built in dac,but guess what?....same problem....rca outputs!! and its over £400! and here is a review worth reading:http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/Chord-Electronics-Chordette-Gem-Bluetooth-DAC-Review

I have just realised that my unit acts as its own soundcard as it cuts the sound from the pc when in use...I do have a music program that allows me to change the output and I find I have to change to: "logitech music anywhere usb transmitter"
Also, the remote only works with itunes and wm,as far as I can see,but still handy....my favourite music software actually mixes the music for me,so I use that a lot when pottering, but remote doesent work on it.
.....at the end of the day all I wanted was for someone to tell me I could convert the rca outputs so I could input to a dac...any takers?

the plot thickens

bobbasrah
17-01-2012, 12:25
George, I think you are missing the point.
A - You already have an analogue out feeding your amp.
B - If you convert that analogue to digital it is no better than the original analogue, just it is a digital signal.
C - Feeding that digital signal into any DAC will convert it back to analogue to feed the amp.

You will not gain anything in the process, and depending on the quality of the ADC and DAC, may well end up with a lower quality audio than which you started with.

Is that clearer?

PS - The bottleneck on all digital audio is the purity of digital signal (timing), and quality of the DAC and it's implementation. Your bottleneck is the Logitech as it IS the process I have just described.

seoirse2002
17-01-2012, 12:59
Hi Bob,
Thankyou for that....yes you are right
But I do know that there is a dac in that receiver,(there has to be)and because of its low price,I felt that its probably a low quality and very basic one,so I figured I could get better sound by feeding it through a caiman....my problem of course is that its already converted to analogue at the rca output stage, and you are perfectly correct....using an adapter and putting it through the caiman
wouldent help and might make it worse.....Now THATS what I needed someone to tell me...thankyou....back to the drawing board then.
I have to say I still like the concept though....and I only use it when we have friends around,or when pottering around the house,so with the other noises and chattering etc. its not an environment for serious listening, but my other Sbox owning friends think it sounds ok for what it is,and most of them love my idea of listening to the music how I want and not how technology forces me to.
Home alone,I listen to vinyl...strange how the odd crackle and pop doesent bother me at all so Im happy with that.
But just as a test, myself and a few friends last week had a comparison test between the same cd streamed from my pc and played on my system at the same time, and in the blind test, all of them chose the pc stream...so that little dac must be doing something....
Now I wonder can the receivers dac be changed....or the receiver connected to another dac?...
someone needs to open this little box up

George

As Bob has said, you are missing the point with the Chord DAC.
The DAC is much higher quality than the one in your Logitech send/receive setup.
The DAC is easily the equal of a Caiman in terms of sound quality. I have friends who have Chordettes, I have a Caiman, and yes, they've been compared.

bobbasrah
17-01-2012, 13:38
In addition to what has been said Chris, we are dealing with Bluetooth delivery of digital signal AND the control signal, so the Chord solution may not function as envisaged....

If the Logitech is considered impressive by your mates with it's limited onboard DAC George, a quality DAC fed somehow from your computer without any of the constraints of the Logitech would probably blow their minds..... but I suspect the existing setup will not be able to be incorporated as you thought.

I don't have one, but the original Squeezebox solution is highly thought of with many lads here, so there is a wealth of experience to tap into, and that can feed the DAC at your stereo.

seoirse2002
17-01-2012, 14:06
No,not missing the point,I do understand.
"the dac is easily the equal to the one in the caiman"
I can get stans caiman for £179...so I would be paying approx £220 for the chords streamer...and no remote etc.
I hate to say it, but sbox might be beckoning as I can get caiman +sbox for price of chord..
But then Im back where I started, being forced to listen to what sbox wants me to,and not whats coming out of my soundcard or created on my pc. and I have to use the network as well.
maybe Ill just buy a notebook with a little screen load my favoutite music programs on there and do it all in the listening room....then no need to stream, use remote etc. and put all my music on nas.I already have an external usb soundcard with digital out.
way to go?

In the name of research and experimentation (the subtle art of f**king about) I have just used Foobar2000 to make a playlist from a couple of tracks in my music library, and then saved the playlist in an appropriate place on my serving machine, set my server to scan the playlist folder and I am now playing the playlist on my Squeezebox Touch with no issues.
I saved the playlist as an m3u file.

So I have a music mixing program that I can save a playlist to...I can choose all the music in a certain order and the player will seamlessly play them all back mixed in to one another..i.e the next song starts at a certain point in the last, say,on fadeout. will sbox allow me to use this player?or any player of my choosing? Its not well known or mainstream, its a radio mixing/broadcast player that uses wav files.mp3,or it own filetype.
In other words, can I use the touch to play/activate this?
right now I just hit play on my pc and go downstairs and everything is played/mixed how I wanted it
If sbox could do this,I might change my mind.

Why don't you download Logitech Media Server and have a play with it?
There is a software player called Squeezeplay that you can use to try out what you want to do - OK, it'll be on the PC, but it'll give you an idea whether the system will do what you want of it.
As long as the playlists are m3u things should work fine.

While admiring your tenacity in seeking to salvage this 2005 £60 device with inherent limitations and create a custom system with no spares if it goes wrong, if Logitech have already dumped it, might I suggest that you should consider likewise, replacing it with something suited perfectly to your objective....

Hello Bob,
And I, at least, have to admire your patience as a senior member in reading these posts, and giving my ideas some kind of thought whether negative or no,which I believe this forum is all about. Many of our now taken for granted items have started out with the "experts" saying "it will never work/catch on" and now everyone has something that was unheard of years ago.
I know its only a £60 device, but as far as spares are concerned,I personally have 3 of them and there are thousands out there to be obtained cheaply, hence my willingness to allow one to be cannabilised by a competent AOS member that has an open mind and willing to take a shot in the dark..and as far as the £60 goes...well we all know these components costs pennies at source. This idea isnt new and in fact Chord have a £4000 dac that works by bluetooth here:http://bluebirdmusic.com/Chord QBD76.htm ...and I believe that will be the future, but I want to be able to choose what dac I use my streamer with, based on financial considerations that we all have....and its not always about the money,Im constantly hearing quotations regarding Stans Dac..."great bang for the buck" "great value for the money" etc etc
But thats marketing for you...remember how much the first mobile phones were?...the first digital watches?
I have now realised that I dont need my receiver to be remote controlled....its the pc that needs the remote so I can skip tracks etc...
I guess Im just a grumpy old git that refuses to be a sheep and follow the flock, and refuses to have technology dictate how I play my music, and I just do not believe that someone in art of sound land cant/wont attempt to look at this little receiver.
I thought this was the DIY project page

Yes, this is a DIY (Do It Yourself) forum, not the SEDI forum, so if tou really want to get started on DIY, let's get to the basics.

Open up one of your spare set, examine the board, and draw out the circuit diagram, and note the component idents, get the data sheets from the manufacturer for each chip to figure out what they do, establish where the signals are split from the blueooth carrier, where they are in turn separated for remote and digital music signals, where the digital audio can be tapped and what bitrate/level it is at, then come back and post what you have found out please.

This rather puts your comment into context.

From Wikipedia ....

A common urban legend states that, faced with the fact that ball-point pens will not write in zero-gravity, NASA spent a large amount of money to develop a pen that would write in the conditions experienced during spaceflight (the result purportedly being the Fisher Space Pen), while the Soviet Union took the simpler (and cheaper) route of just using pencils.

Russian cosmonauts used pencils, and grease pencils on plastic slates until also adopting a space pen in 1969 with a purchase of 100 units for use on all future missions.[1] NASA programs previously used pencils (for example a 1965 order of mechanical pencils[2]) but because of the substantial dangers that broken-off pencil tips and graphite dust pose in zero gravity to electronics and the flammable nature of the wood present in pencils[2] a better solution was needed. NASA never approached Paul Fisher to develop a pen, nor did Fisher receive any government funding for the pen's development. Fisher invented it independently, and then asked NASA to try it. After the introduction of the AG7 Space Pen, both the American and Soviet (later Russian) space agencies adopted it.

Why don't you do the blindingly obvious and use a laptop/notebook, preferably with a SPDIF output (either coax or optical - it doesn't really matter which), although you could use USB if the material you play doesn't exceed 16/48.
Recent laptops are pretty quiet beasts.
You could then connect up to one of Stan's Caimans.

Hi Chris,
AT LAST!!
Someone has told me that what I want to do is not a simple task!!!( I did say it was a challenge)
All I was getting was alternatives to what I THOUGHT was a simple task..
Anyway,as per Bobs advice,I called Logitech and looked up the various forums for my device...wow I didnt know I could stream music to to from an IPOD and/or pair it with other devices....anyway,I digress....
"The item is no longer supported" thats Logitech's reply...
I wonder how long it will be before the SQ is no longer supported.....
Thanks for the advice, but if you read back on some of the posts you will see that the notebook was one of my obvious alternatives that I wanted to avoid, but Im happily using it now as its got digital outs, but obviously using the analogue out until I get the dac...mmmmm just thought of something, the notebook has bluetooth!!..stream to the notebook and digital out to the DAC!!!.....no... lets not go there...
Thanks guys!!
Its all been very interesting and entertaining....but my quest will continue, and probably wont succeed...
how long can an spdif cable be?
If I find a solution I will let you all know...
Best Regards

Surely, you wouldent say no to a better solution to your streaming? with no network to worry about, and no issues with what you can or cannot play drm or otherwise....there are plenty of dacs in the water, but thats not the issue.
All I would like is a nice clean stream from my pc to a receiver, without having to rely on servers,or networks etc. with remote, and be able to choose my own dac.....and its already been shown by chord that it is possible and sonically superior, otherwise they wouldent be going to all that trouble...are they reinventing the wheel?...no, they are looking at the future....oh, and one more thing,I can pick up all my neighbours networks....there is also the security issue....
I have since discovered that there is an even better version of what I use with a display built in to the remote and a way to scroll through your music library and line up the music....its a Class I Bluetooth version with the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile(same as chord, but probably not as refined)

He is no stranger to the world of remote control and integrated circuits and, since childhood, has been taking things apart. He now has my little sender and receiver to take apart for the weekend. Hes says he will "look into it" but doesent think its stupid at all.
we shall see:)

Nobody said the idea was stupid George, just way more complicated for someone to expend their time on, and certainly NOT what DIY is about:eyebrows:.I suggest you read up on what Bluetooth, 54g, and LAN actually are, how they work, and what their respective data rates are, in preparation for the next hurdle.
Glad you found a SEDI to look at it rather than read up and DIY, best of luck with that.

Squash balls are marginally too large, and not found here in any of the sports shops anyhow. Something will turn up, or will be resolved when visiting elsewhere.

Certainly an idea, IF I were in the UK. But if I were in the UK, I would have an infinite variety to choose from..... It will be resolved even if I mould something myself.
You would be better expending your efforts on knowing more about Bluetooth, WLAN, LAN, etc..

Hi All,
Just to let you know...neighbours kid came up trumps and I now have digital output from my little box...he has bypassed the inbuilt dac and everything else is working as it should....he brought his own dac around to let me hear the difference....WOW! and his dac is in a small tin box that he made himself.
There was no need to mess with the remote control or bluetooth...problem is I have no dac so Im using my spare now and he has taken my little box away to do more mods on it...he says it needs "proper" bluetooth for better signal and says he will come back with a bit perfect solution...Im now using mediamonkey with my spare as the remote works with it....
more to follow...
