View Full Version : How many cartridges do you have?

I've had my SL7 and SL-QL1 linear trackers about two months and have already got eight different p-mount cartridges for them. But I suspect that's nothing compared to some of you folk - 'fess up: you know who you are. :D

My latest is this dinky Sony XL-MC104P high output moving coil. I got it from a guy in Oregon after speculatively replying to a Vinyl Engine thread over a year old. You can replace the "stylus" unit 'cos the whole tube bit comes way from the mount. So it's a plug in plug in cartridge . Sounds sweet, too.

Lousy pic because it's through the lid of the SL7 (only way for an action shot . .)

I've got 150, maybe 200. Everything from AT95E through various Decca's to the original Koetsu. That's what you call 'hoarding'.

I think I'm with Roy, I have three that I know of :eyebrows: Ok, sounds odd but I don't know what I'm going to find here yet

So that'd be Nagoaka MP11 Boron, Denon DL103 & Goldring G800.

Three must be a popular number. Nagaoka MP-11, Stanton 681eee-III and Shure M75EJ-2 here.

Whew !! when my wife next says "don't you think you have enough of them ?" I can show her Dave's post and feel amongst the deprived.

I have a couple of Rega MM's not sure which, a Soundsmith 'The Voice' Moving Iron, 2 Koetsu Blacks, a VDH Colibri, a Lyra Evolve 99, a Kiseki Blue plus a Koetsu Onyx. Also forgot I have a Clearaudio Accurate as well.

So only about 50 milliDaves worth of cartridge.

My question for the above is which one(s) do you like best for a particular type of music? - "like this one for rock, this for classical", etc.
By the way, I have 3: all Grados (Signature 8MZ, G3, Zf3 or something like that...)

Best,

Probably a bit over 20, including Ortofon SL15E, Ortofon FF15E, Ortofon VMS5E, Shure M95HE (very good), Shure M75ED (four off, inc. one with 78 stylus), Shure M75 6, Goldring G800, B&O SP?, Audio Technica AT66, various Philips GP cartridges (very good and not much talked about).

Yes, presuming that you only have one turntable, or one turntable fitted with just with one arm... Then there are of course arms with detachable headshells, making multiple cartridge swaps quick and easy..... ;)

Marco.

P.S I currently only have six. Boo hoo....!

Why so many? Are you all dealers? Are you counting ones which you've used, then swapped out and then put in a box which is now in the loft or under the bed?

I might have three, possibly more, but none really used right now. They might include a Shure V15, Shure M75ED, possibly a Shure M95ED, Ortofon VMS20, another Ortofon- maybe FF15E mk II All are moving magnet as I could never afford a moving coil. I have had more in the past - whether I've still got them I don't know. These would even have included some ceramic and crystal cartridges, and I think I even had an EMI EPU arm and cartridge which I never used and eventually I did get rid of that one - possibly to the dump!

Apart from ones which might now be stored in boxes, as an alternative to sending them to the tip, how many of your cartridges do you use fairly regularly, and why? You're allowed one or two in your main deck(s) (maybe 2 decks) of course.

I'm not sure that I'll ever get back into vinyl, though I may have some recordings that are not available on CD. Sad in some ways, but does it matter?

Ortofon 2M Black
Ortofon Kontrapunkt B

Dynavector DV-20 X2L

I thought I had more than that! The Benz is likely to be traded in for a new Wood SL (less prone to accidental damage); the Ortofon 2M Black is simply surplus to requirements and I need to move it on; the Dynavector was bought new very recently as a replacement for the trashed Benz, but I don't like it and it too needs to move on.

Tom's Rohmann is coming my way too!

I currently have one working cartridge. A Shure M95ED, but I don't have bolts long enough for it.
Hopefully by the end of next week I shall be singing the praises of the new Jico SAS stylus that will go on my VST V. In the meantime I shall sit here and write many thousand times 'Must not break my canilever whilst removing dust'.

Years ago messed around trying Shure cartridges (all new). Liked the M75ED and thought the M95ED would be an improvement, but no, not really worse, or better, just a bit different. But the M95HE was better than both.

The 95ED is okay. I'm sure it would be a lot better with a better stylus. The VST V is really rather good. Hopefully with the new stylus it will still be very good.

The HE stylus dramatically improved a V15 III as well and I'm wondering if the difference may also have been due to the suspension compound used? Can't prove it and have no way of knowing, but most of the dynamic "flatness" seemed to disappear, along with the slightly hard tones of the standard VN35E stylus.

The odd Shure out for me is the V15 IV. Shure changed the coil resistance inside to try to make it load tolerant, but i'm not altogether sure (sorry :D) it worked. The V15 V seemed to return to the loading of old, so it will subtly change with capacitance and load impedance I believe, but the sound from even the first "V" was smooth and quite spacious, albeit "smaller" in stature than many MC types, which used to over-egg the pudding on occasion.

The SAS styli do seem rather more labour intensive on the whole construction, and not just the diamond itself and too many people now have said how much better than the original tips these are nowadays.

5, I reckon.

Nagaoka MP-30 (current main cart in my Garrard 401) & a MP-15, ADC VLM MkII (?) In my Technics SL-150, Audio Technica AT95E (25 years old and still going strong!) in my Planar 3/R200 & an Ortofon 510 MkII - hardly used in my Pro-Ject RPM4, which I really should have sold to one of the several interested parties after I advertised it last year... but I just cant bring myself to!
