Hi guys,

Just a quickie... A friend of mine is selling his (near mint) Rega Planar 3 and would like to know how much he should be asking for it?

I'm not sure, so how much do you think would be a fair price? A ballpark figure would be fine - ta!

How old is it ?

Hi Chris,

Not entirely sure, as I haven't seen it yet.

I don't think it's one of the early ones, though. If you could give me a rough guideline price, from X to X, depending on age, that would be great :)

Is it a Planar 3, a P3, P3-24 and does it have the RB300 ?

Well a new RP1 can be had for £220 and may sound similar to an older P3. So I would guess around £150 tops. Why not put it on Ebay with Buy It Now at £199 (assuming it's top condition) and open to offers. Then your friend should get the best market price. If it's the P3 -24 might fetch more. Realisticaly £200 tops as there are brand new P3-24's for around £280 now.

150 to 200 seems about right .

You thinking of swapping your Technics for it, then Marco?

:D

Don't even go there Adam :D

Yeah, I think £150 is about average, especially as a minty little used one will have a lop-sided belt, the mat will have gone fluffy and the arm and main-bearing nuts will almost certainly be loose now - the main bearing dries out on these as well and rapid wear results, so a darned good service will be in order - and I bet Rega's dealers charge for this service these days as well - we never used to!

I usually charge £5 for a service and clean or £10 if it's covered in crud and dead skin cells..

Thanks for the info, chaps. I went along there and it turns out it's a Planar 2, with an RB250. It's in good nick, though.

So could you please revise your estimates accordingly? Ta!

Just for 'old time sake', I bought a poor condition one last year for £80. To be honest, I could have got a good one for that..

Having said that, you could probably get £50 for the RB200 on it's own.

Marco

Cheers, Dave. It's also got a working Goldring Elan cartridge on it, so I guess that £100 would be reasonable? :)

He might get a tad more by selling the Elan separately.

DSJR
13-01-2012, 19:39
IMO the Elan is only fit for the bin - terrible thing and nothing like as good as a G800 IMO...

Since the Planar 2 has an RB250 fitted, I'd say around a ton at least, knowing current fleabay prices, but I still maintain what I suggested re belt, mat and a clean and lube...

Hi Dave,

I'm presuming that it is an RB250... Didn't all P2s come with a 250, as opposed to a 300?

I know that the deck is in 100% stock form :)

Here it is. Ignore the dust, as I didn't have a chance to clean it before taking the picture:

I was thinking of the original, wooden framed Planar 2 with R200 arm.

The one shown is the RB250, which might well fetch £80 or more on it's own and yes, the Planar 2 as shown, only came with the RB250.

I think it's a 1990's one, as it has the green Rega logo on. While you're cleaning it marco, please gently lift out the inner hub (don't lose the ball, which usually stays in situ) and see what the oil drop on the spindle tip looks like. There'll be a little running mark where the ball contacts the spindle centre (that's fine :)), but the oil shouldn't have turned black and gooey. You'll see what I mean about the belt too probably, as it takes a set if the platter is left stationary for a long time..

While we're at it, chaps, he's also got a Dual 505, with a Nagaoka MP11:

Any ideas on pricing for that one? :)

Marco.

Can you do an E-Bay search to find out what they go for ? Also see how much an RB250 on it's own sells for.

I would list the TT with arm, starting at £100 and see what happens.

If he can be bothered, put the Elan of separately, as it won't increase the TT selling price.

Marco

Cheers, Dave. I was going to advertise them on here first :)

Any thoughts on the Dual?

In that case, I would list the Rega at £125 and the Dual at £50. List the MP11 separately because they are sought after.

As I say, the RB250 must be worth £80 or so on it's own.

Marco
13-01-2012, 20:58
Yup, I'll do that. Thanks mucho, Dave

Marco.

P.S I believe that my mate Rich Conroy bought a Rega system off you recently? He's delighted with it :)

He's probably delighted with the price but he hasn't taken delivery yet. Then he'll be delighted with it..:smoking:

Marco

Lol... I thought he'd had it delivered. I must've picked up that wrong. Yes he was delighted with the price!

When he gets a new job, he'll be going for the high-end stuff ;)

Please ensure that my 'shilling' cheque is in the post before close of business tomorrow... You can post mine along with Dave's! :eyebrows:

Marco, definitely list the MP11 separately.
Nice cartridge and still popular.

Hi Rob,

Cheers, I've done that :)

This kind of proves the original purchase was not a bad investment really considering that when that Planar 2 was new, it cost £125 and the arm as a separate item only cost £60!

Marco

Absolutely, Chris! :)
