Glasgow calling

Hi guys, another new member here.

My name is Tony and I'm from deepest darkest Glasgow.

My hi-fi consists of a brand new Croft Micro Basic pre-amp complete with phono board, a Sugden A21aP power-amp, Arcam CD23T CD player, an old Creek tuner and a pair of Proac Studio 140 speakers.

Music tastes are mainly the female voice, Jazz, seventies soul, Bowie, and some classical stuff (mainly opera).

I hope to be here for a while and contribute when I can however as I'm pretty new to hi-fi despite my age (I'm 52) I mainly lurk.

My very first hi-fi was a Pioneer rack set up way back in 1980 when I got married, it cost me £500 at the time and I had to take out a bank loan to pay for it but I loved it however the kids came along about eight years later and that was the end of Hi-Fi for me until about two years ago when I started buying second hand AV stuff but I quickly realised that wasn't for me so I moved over to Hi-Fi and I love it.

Thanks, I'm actually from the Gorbals although not now as I've moved up in the world to suburbia or leafy Clarkston:D

The Gorbals is still the Gorbals but in recent years it's attracted the professional classes due to it's proximity to the High and Sheriff courts and the city centre which is about five minutes walk away however those people live cheek by jowl with the residents of the Gorbals some of whom are junkies, sadly.

Hi Reid Malenfant, yes it did have a (bad) reputation but it was mainly undeserved. The vast majority of people who live and have lived in the Gorbals are salt of the earth types who would give you their last penny. Sadly however as always there are some people from there who contributed to that bad reputation.

I've been away from there for about 38years now but if anyone asks me where I come from I always say The Gorbals.

Having said that though I could never go back there, I've been away for too long.

Re the Croft pre, it's literally just arrived today and have not had a chance to set it up yet but once I do I'll post my thoughts. I'm looking forward to hearing the Croft with the Sugden.

I've just sold the integrated Sugden which I had hooked up to the power amp but I took a mad notion at Christmas when I saw an AVI integrated for sale on one of the other forums so I decided to sell the Sugdens however I couldn't get rid of the poweramp so decided to try it with a Croft pre as I read that valves and SS are a good match so we'll see.

Settle yourself into the forum and you'll get to know more of the scots boys...some ex pats that also retain the acerbic whit and no shite attitude. Marco the high heidgin is an ex Thornliebank lad, doesnae take any pish and tells it like it is.

Dead down to earth, lots of very knowledgeable people on here who go out of they're way to help. Be prepared to have your wallet take a bit of a kicking, lots of fun to be had on the journey to getting the most out your music.

Hi JJack, to be honest I'm totally amazed but Glasgow is now a bit of a tourist hotspot. Totally beyond me as there's not much here that I would come here for but people seem to love it.

Personally I would go to Edinburgh for culture etc if I were coming here to visit but my wife assures me that Glasgow has great shopping and is a really good place for tourists to visit.

It's literally crawling with Spanish, English and French people now.

Never thought I would see the day that Glasgow was regarded in this way but there you go.

BTW, the Croft Micro Basic pre is astonishing. I was previously using a Sugden A21A integrated feeding an A21Ap poweramp via the pre-outs on the integrated and bi-amping my speakers but the Croft and the A21ap is by some way better.

I've had a few different bits and pieces of amps and speakers recently and the change from one to another wasn't that much different from the previous set up but the Croft is massively different from what I've heard before with my system.

I'm loving it:)
