Zuk's Technics odyssey begins...

First stop - Richard (Vantage) has collected the deck, already dismantled by me, and is going to knock-up a quick and dirty external PSU and rewire the Technics arm for me. That'll get me going and give me a reference point.

On the far distant horizon I can see my ultimate destination as clear as day - MartinT's rig!

For the moment though, when I get the deck back from Richard, I'll get an Achromat I think, and then start playing records and comparing with my other deck - Scheu Das Laufwerk. Both decks using Zu103 cartridge of course.:cool:

LOL - nice one Simon. I've taken a couple of wrong turns but my deck in its current state is damned fine, even if I say so myself. Make sure the quick-and-dirty power supply is up to the job as the Techie responds extremely well to very clean 21V DC, this is an area not to be compromised.

Also, don't forget what impact the SUT (if you're going MC) and phono stage have on the proceedings. Good luck and keep us posted!

Doesn't Zu Audio in the USA do extensive mods to the SL1200. I recall seeing a blog somewhere with a baby-blue painted SL1200, with an RB-1000 arm and a CNC machined arm-board.

yes, you're right - Sean at Zu loves Techies and has been playing around with them for years. We've got two decks playing at the Vegas show as we speak, both using Audiomods tonearms that we've had made for us - bloody fantastic pieces of kit!

There's no doubt in our minds that the MN bearing is an excellent piece of work and that's where we'd all like to go when we have a few spare bundles of cash available to afford them. And the funk platters of course.:cool:

+1 on both counts here. The effects of the MN bearing are well documented so I wont bore your pants off talking about it. The funk platter I have no experience with, but the funk acromat is something else. I must admit i was scepital when I first heard about it. I bought one on sheer whimsy one night but I have to say it was money well spent. It works extremely well with the MN platter and I have read reports that it works really well on the stock techie platter as well. Hope this helps and good luck with your techie journey.
