Frank,
Its a shame you dont have the blue to swap back and forth. The black is definitely more open and honest than the blue, markedly less colouration on the frequency extremes. I cant really remember If they took a while to settle down, give them a bit of time....they should come good.
Regards Tony.

My Ultra Blacks arrive tomorrow and the Kimber KS-3035s are doing rather well on eBay. I still have the Kimber jumpers to sell too :)

Hesitate to ask as it could have horrible implications for everyone's wallet.....
Did you try the even more expensive I/Cs and Speaker cables
(Don't think I remember seeing you post about them)

I was hoping you wouldn't say that! :D

Joking aside, I am sitting listening to Gordon Haskell, and thru the Blues, he is sounding Veeeeeeee Good! :eyebrows:

No, on the basis that the Graphites cost twice the UBs and I knew if I heard them that I might not be able to go back to anything else.

Seriously: the UBs (and Black XLRs) are a considerable improvement over my bloomin' expensive Kimbers, so I'm happy with the step up.

Aren't the Graphites still a lot cheaper than the Kimbers you're selling ?

I hope so Tony I really do.

It was the fact that the Blues were so special that led me on to upgrading to the Blacks, especially so when others have said it's a worthwhile move. The Blues unfortunately had to go to help finance the Blacks purchase, otherwise I could have kept the Blues to A-B compare the two. While I must concede that some more detail and space has come with the Blacks, it is that solid thump in the guts quality of bass that I had with the Blues, is what I desperately miss right now. I shall persevere over the weekend to see if some more hours can improve matters, but to be truthful I am not optimistic.

I have had a PM from Colin expressing his sympathy for my unhappiness and reckons the terminations may need looking at. I am loathe to part with them and be without any speaker cables at all until it's sorted though :(

Frank, that is a nice gesture from Colin, I find it interesting that from the very start you said you felt the Tellurium banana plugs actually detracted from the quality of the SQ, and now you have Colin looking at them for you, please make sure you keep us (me!) informed as to the outcome.

I have to say I honestly don't want you to come back here and say the Blacks trounce the Blue, as that would mean I HAD to get some TQ Black too!

I have already sold on my Belkin cables otherwise I would have sent them down for you to use in the interim. :)

Always best to keep some speaker cable in the house eh frank, you should have kept some of the stuff I sent you, I have orders pending for blue which will have the TQ z-plugs fitted but I also have some orders with Furutech bananas fitted (as blue is the only speaker cable TQ allow dealers to fit their own connectors on) nice one eh!

Funny you should say that Craig, I was rummaging around in a box in the shed a minute ago and found the Belkin speaker cable I had completely forgotten about . . . . . and some Belkin interconnects . . . and some peculiar oil filled chinese i/c's . . . . . and some early prototype KK cables too

You're killing me, Mike!

Nope - I'm really happy with the cable evaluation and my decision to buy the UBs. There could be such a thing as over-egging the pudding and I'm always happy when my system displays good synergy. No one component dominates, which is another way of saying that I'd have to upgrade everything in order to gain another step up and I think I'm well into the law of diminishing returns now.

The point you make about over-egging the pudding is an interesting one Martin . I've also been at the point where a cable upgrade shows up flaws in other areas of my system and I've had to backtrack to retreive the previous synergy achieved . Sometimes I just don't know where to stop.

When I was sent the cables for evaluation I was warned that I might prefer the Greens to the Ultra Blacks as they are more forgiving. Well, I didn't, but I can see where TQ are coming from in offering the Green. The Ultra Blacks are a wide open window and will mercilessly reveal any deficiencies in your system, such as harshness.

I think this is why some people don't like silver cables (as a rule). Silver isn't harsh in itself, but it will reveal harshness elsewhere in the system.

How is your 'very' front end, IE Mains ?
Going back a few years, just after we moved into our new place my system sounded awful.
Huge improvments in quailty came from dedicated, unswitched sockets for the hifi and an improved earth for the house
Ok I was running a 4 way off a 4 way off a switched socket and the earth was poor, possibly original 50s. Kimber mains leads were a big step up too.
Wonder if wonderful speaker cable points out horrid mains.......

brian2957
27-04-2012, 09:38
It seems to be advisable to sort out the mains first before moving on to the interconnects and then the speaker cables. I use a Belkin mains block and Mark Grant mains cables , all to good effect in my system . I also use a silver plated unswitched MK double socket . IMO all have had a cumulative effect in producing a better sound.
Brian.

Martin, would you say it's like an acid test for your system then?

Yes, good cables will (and should) reveal everything. If you hear deficiencies, it's an indicator that something is holding back overall sound quality. Mains is vital too - as discussed elsewhere - you must sort out a good supply to the equipment. No B&Q four-way strips! Also check your supports and isolation.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I have been a bit premature (story of my life arf arf) with this as I've not even received the cables yet, so may not even have an issue; it's an interesting topic to me though.

I've got a fully silver plated mains distribution block from MCRU, an Mains Cables R Us Ultimate Mains Power Lead, and RDC stuff on my rack. Unfortunately I can't mess with the mains in my flat as it's rented (although I could have a word with my landlord), I've heard nothing but good things about those switchless Furutech plugs.

The TQs arrived today! I have installed the Ultra Black main runs and jumpers, as well as a final Black XLR interconnect for the SACD player.

Despite running them stone cold from new, they sound simply stunning. I seem to be benefitting from them being just the right length - 2.5m pair rather than the 7m pair of loan cables. The definition and open window nature of their sound is all there, as much from CD as from LP.

In just three months I have transformed my system from all-Kimber to all-Tellurium Q cables. I haven't even lost any money over it. Lovely!

Bye all, I'm off for a very extended listening session :)

Interesting analogy, i not keen on silver cables but never thought of it in that way, i have a pair of pure silver speaker cables here that retailed at around £1500 and i like what they do to some things but not to others and overall they irratate me a bit after a while so i'm sticking with the Belkins at the moment but following this thread with interest being a bit of a cable septic

There is now around 7 hours on these new cables and they are beginning to sound half decent. The bass in my opinion still isn't quite as crisp, tight, or well defined as I had with the Blues and these Blacks are showing signs of improvement with each passing hour so I won't give up yet on that score, but in all fairness the midband is starting to show it's true colours and the treble is sounding so much sweeter so there is still hope.

I decided this evening to give a couple of live albums a twirl and that's where I have found these cables really do excel. My favourite live album is Sting's 2000 stint at the Royal Albert Hall which is very well recorded (Some say it was blagged off the Sky TV recording of the event) and is full of some great musicianship. The audience in particular is VERY well defined and for the first time ever, isn't sounding like a frying pan full of sizzling bacon which is directly attributable to the TQ Blacks, because even the Blues couldn't conjure up that magic, nor any other cable I've owned for that matter. Bear in mind I have probably listened to this album numbering up in the thousands of times over a good number of years.

The other album I played was Dire Straits "On the night" which again sounded alive, immediate and full of energy, with a good many "not heard that before" moments on most of the tracks. Again no "sizzling bacon" effects from the audience, so my fears and doubts about the Blacks are diminished somewhat since I received them and when I am finally happy with the bass performance then I will STFU

Interesting as this afternoon I was playing Kraftwerk's Minimum Maximum live album and I was thinking the same thing: how well reproduced the audience sounds between the tracks, each individual's clapping highly resolved.

I can't speak for the Blacks, but the Ultra Blacks have the tightest, most extended and most well defined bass I have ever heard from my system.

I demoed a pair of Blues a couple of years back and thought they were an improvement on my solid silver cables. This track in particular really impressed me and separated out around my listening room in a spectacular fashion. At the time I didn't have the funds to change cables but I would have otherwise. Still might.....but I need/want a new camera lol.

Hand on heart Colin they are starting to sound good now the hours are clocking up. Put some more live albums on last night an was enthralled.

What has thrown me is that I just don't recall having to wait for the Blues to follow a similar curve because they sounded awesome from the outset straight out of the packet. That, plus the fact that the Blues are a bit more forgiving with less than perfect recordings whereas the Blacks tend to lay bare all the nasties. In my honest opinion though, the Blacks still cannot match that total crispness and well controlled bass the Blues exhibited in my system although either I am being less critical over time or the Blacks are indeed maturing with age :eyebrows:

My findings are similar to your own. I run black on my treble and blue on my bass.I have swapped them about but always return to this set up. The black sounds quite different to the blue when on the bass....whether its better!!!

Hi Tony,
Thats very interesting, so it would seem that there maybe a consistency emerging as to which cable suit certain frequencies, Although i wonder if its the same for the ultra range like Martin T and others are using, its difficult i supose if you havent started off at the basic versions to know what the lower end does in a paticuar system compared with the middle and higher end.

I use them bi-wired at the moment using the tellurium on the high frequency units and a diffrent configuration type cable [multi strand individualy insulated] on the low frequency units.
The plaque just states the model and has the crossover adjustment controls.

Well I wouldn't necessarily say I prefer the Belkin on bass duties, but I certainly prefer the black on mid to high compared to the Belkin.

What I really need to do though is stop spending money on cables and get the direct coupled amps and statics up and running. Won't need to worry about speaker cable then coz I won't be using any!

One less element in the chain to worry about.
However, as Martin states, you will still need something to connect them, but i guess they will be so short that their impression on the sonics will be neglegable, so not realy an issues as long as its decent stuff.

Surely the effect a cable has on sound is constant, regardless of length?
hi Martin,
some of their character will always remain, however, other elements that make up the sonic character of cables will be reduced ie; capacitance, resistance, reactance etc.

Aye,
Thats the ticket!:)
One less element in the chain to worry about.
However, as Martin states, you will still need something to connect them, but i guess they will be so short that their impression on the sonics will be neglegable, so not realy an issues as long as its decent stuff.
Let us know when you have them up and running Ali.

Remember though that the "speaker cables" in this case will have about 2kv RMS on them :-)

Hi All,
Just thought I’d add an update of my findings now the tellurium black has been in my system for a couple of months.
Well, as anyone who has been following this thread will have read, my initial findings of the cable were good, with the main outstanding qualities being, timing, and high frequency cleanliness etc, however after a few weeks of listening to the cable run as full range in my system, I found that even though the bass was tuneful and precise, initially it tended to lack body and weight, so, I have been running it since just on the high frequency units of my Tannoys, and to be honest I have just left them run in.
Today however, I had a few hours to actually sit and listen and re-evaluate things again, initially, something didn’t seem right, the detail was there for sure, but there was something aggravating initially about the midrange, :scratch:an imbalance that finally made me start changing things around, I started with interconnects, I have been using Mark Grant cables for a while now and I really rate them especially on their neutrality in my system, however, I have recently changed the plugs on them so I tried momentarily changing them out for another type, there was a difference but it wasn’t an improvement, quite the opposite in fact, which was a relief, anyway, to cut a long story short, I decided to remove the Tellurium black and go back to my long term speaker cables and try again, now this is where it got interesting, the elements in the mid range that had originally irritated me enough to start swapping things had subsided but now other irritations became more obvious, i.e., timing, bass colouration, etc, so, for a few minuets I was at a loss, but I then decide to remove completely my long term speaker cable and momentarily re-try the Tellurium full range i.e.; on both the bass and high frequency units in my speakers, after the first 20 seconds or so of a track I had listened to a few times already, I was gob smacked, first of all, gone was the aggravation, back came the timing, but the biggest shock was how much the bass and the mid range had improved since the last time I had tried the Tellurium full range, I carried on listening to a number of tracks that I had previously listened to just to make sure I had a handle on what was going on, but time after time, the much improved Sonics and weight continued to impress, so much so that I really feel that I am now listening and hearing some of those tracks for the first time as they were meant to sound.
I now realise that what was aggravating me was a mismatch of two different cables that initially their differences seemed to compliment each other when the Tellurium was new, however, after the Tellurium had been given some much needed time to burn in, its true capabilities became overwhelming, and what I was now hearing with both cables in the mix was an unbalanced and aggravation of reality, if that makes sense.
My findings today have only served to remind me that all components need time to get where they are going,[some more than others] but where the Tellurium black is concerned, when it gets there, the results can be astounding.:)

Nice one, Anthony. I'm glad that you've finally nailed bringing out the best of the TQ, and also your system!

Your final thoughts on the experience for me highlight both how important it is to allow new cables to burn-in fully *AND* that the only way you can assess cables properly is to use a full 'loom' of the same type, in a specific application - I.E on speaker cables, or with interconnects, from source component to preamp, and then from preamp to power amp.

It's fine to use speaker cables and interconnects from different manufacturers, but NOT to mix different types of cables from different manufacturers in a specific application within a system. In my experience, it just doesn't work, which in my opinion is why when Mark (YNWaN) reviewed the Mark Grant G2000HDs recently, with different phono plugs, he got rather mixed results....

Anyway, mate, nice write-up, and enjoy the choons!

Just got my Ultra Blacks through and my initial impressions are just wow (technical I know), this is replacing some Black Rhodium Emprors I had on demo and it just blows it out of the water.

Am I rifght in remembering this stuff is directional? If so how are you meant to tell? I'd guess I've got it right judging by the sound. I'll be back after a few hours or 'running it in'

Martin - read the Tellurium Q logo the right way up and direction goes from left (source) to right (destination).

Don't forget to put 100 hours on them, they'll get progressively better!

Hi All,
Something else i feel i should add, and that is, cables, and i mean cables full stop cannot add performance that isnt already there, What a good cable can do is hilight the true potential of your system, so, lets be clear here, if by using Tellurium in your system you have a perceived improvement in performance then you are just hearing more of what your system was capable of, and that is all anyone should expect from a good cable, no magic, just plain old honesty.
It is very rare that you will ever read or hear my views on any products here or anywhere else on the net, however, once in a while along comes a product that i personaly feel deserves attention, we all have choices, you can choose to ignore and in some cases pooh pooh the findings here, or you can have an open mind and try for yourself, what have you got to lose.

Taken from the website "Tellurium Delerium 2" : http://www.wolandepiphanius.com/weve/book-page/chapter-5-tellurium-delirium-2

“I think we’ve been found,” I said. Aime was clutching me tightly and didn’t say a word. I repeated what I had said, again, but she just squeezed tighter. “Yes, I think Teresa is definitely a repulsive person.” I had to say something to break the silence. Still, she didn’t respond. “Aime,” I said, trying to get her attention, “Aime, why aren’t you answering me?”

“Because, sometimes, people just need to touch and feel and not say so much,” and she wouldn’t let me go. I passively accepted this. I felt kind of silly, but to say that to her would have meant certain doom. And I liked uncertain doom; anything certain was too constraining.

The vapor glided over the dry land. Heaviness filled its heart. It had betrayed Sophia, and now she hated it because it ruined the Salvation. Another Aeon she would have to wait before another batch of the children of light could be had. All of this misery he had made her suffer because he had tried to help her. It looked down upon the suffering people, and it couldn’t help them. The road to good intentions is paved with Hell, it thought to itself.

“Ha! There you are. We’ve been looking for you,” and Pesky was approaching us at a rapid pace. Aime let go of me slowly and turned around to face him. Pesky put his arms around her and they exited the room together like that, arm in arm. Teresa watched them disappear then turned to me.

“You sure there’s nothing going on between you two?” she asked, and I felt that there was sarcasm in her voice.

“I told you that we’re friends.” I was beginning to think of her as a witch.

“Friends don’t kiss each other like that. That’s what lovers do. It’s all right if you tell me. I won’t tell Fred,” she said. I was beginning to resent her. If I had the chance, I would cannibalize her flesh and only leave her bones. Take that putrid flesh off her and give it to my body. More mass meant more existence.

“Do you have a problem with that?” I asked. Retaliation with words was the best defense.

“How long have you known Aime?” My mind came to an abrupt halt, she was questioning me without answer my questions. How ill mannered.

“Aime? I’ve known her since my freshman year at the university. Why?”

“Because… well, do you think that she’s cute?” Cute? Aime? She was a beautiful woman and this witch will never know how beautiful.

“Cute? Yeah, I think she’s cute. Why do you ask? Are you jealous of her?” I knew that I would have asked this question eventually. “Why don’t you ask Fred if he thinks she’s cute? Maybe that’s what you’re looking for: his opinion and not mine.”

She started walking toward me with a weird smile on her lips. I started backing up, making sure she kept an arm’s length away from me. “What?” I asked, hoping that words were strong enough to stop her advances. But, she kept coming and I kept on retreating until I hit the wall, and her arms trapped me. She out guessed me, and her legs prevented me from ducking and running away. She was stronger than I.

“I think that you’re very cute. Not only cute, but very sexy…”

“But, you’re not drunk,” I said, hoping to break the tension.

“No, but I’m intoxicated by your presence,” and I saw her face come closer to mine, her lips hovering downward toward my lips. I tried turning my head but she clamped me into position with her hands. Her tongue came out like a snake a few seconds before our lips met.

Sophia, forgive me.

Poison is all round us. Poison in the form of brittle metal fills our being. Poison as rusted iron flows through our system. Poison is what the stuff of life is made of. Poison makes you stronger if it doesn’t kill you. Poison misspelled in French means fish.

Teresa, having had her fun, was walking out of the room. I resented her at that moment. It had never been nice to be tongued by someone you disliked. Eventually, I would have my cannibal fantasy and all her being would be swallowed into mine. Her existence would fade and mine grow stronger. I would have to suck all the life out of her, like an incubus.

But before she was completely out of the room, with viciousness in her heart, she turned around and blocked my exit, again. What? I thought to myself, What now? Does she want to make love on this cold, cement floor?

I stopped, my spine chilling my courage. “Not enough fun for you?” My words didn’t come out right. My mind was swirling.

“Just one more thing, or two. I really enjoyed that kiss. And…” here she smiled even more maliciously, “I think Aime is really cute. And I mean really, really cute,” and she turned around, and disappeared through the doorway.

My feet wouldn’t move. I am Daphne, and here are your laurels, my hunter. This crazy world was mine and it belonged to me as a nut belongs to a nutshell. Was Teresa…? Pesky and Aime? Both? Aime and Teresa? Pesky and Teresa? Aime, Teresa and Pesky? This was getting to be better than a soap opera.

I was tackled by Teresa as I exited the room. We both fell to the floor, and the cold cement on my back chilled my spine. Apollo had caught his Daphne. And I wasn’t even a tree yet. I couldn’t help it but to return that passion. My body was crying out to stop but, my mind was incensed with the idea… of… Pesky and Aime? Teresa and Aime? Pesky and Teresa? Pesky, Aime and Teresa? It was just too exciting for my mind. Teresa came up for air and looked down at me. “You’re incorrigible. You must be made of steel.” No, Teresa, I’m made of brittle metal, easily broken and very malleable.

“You’re not Maia; you’re too real for me,” and she helped me to my feet. “Why the hell did you do that for?”

She smiled and walked away. I saw Pesky and Aime at the far end of the corridor. Aime must have seen what happened for she started walking toward me, and as they passed each other, Teresa’s hand moved behind Aime’s hip. Aime looked back for a second, only a second, and kept coming toward me. My gait was slow and heavy. Aime’s face was full of concern.

“Are you all right? I saw you go down like a log. Boy, she can be rough sometimes.”

“How rough?” Now I was getting really curious. My mind was racing… Pesky, Aime and Teresa? Together… Oh my!

“Well... Here, let me take a look at your head,” and she turned me around and started to feel the back of my head. She rubbed here and there, and it felt really nice.

“I think I hurt my shoulders, also,” I was lying but getting a free massage was always nice.

“Here?”

“Yeah, but harder, I don’t feel anything.”

“Feel this,” and I felt her palm on my back. It stung for a second then went away. I turned to face her. “You trickster. You have to give me a massage before I give you one. That’s the contract, remember?”

“All right. I’m fine. Luckily, I have a harder head than people think.” It’s made of brittle metal and is full of poison, or French fish. Then, I felt the sting and the pain was something like this: sharp, dull, sharp, dull.

“What was she doing?” Should I tell her? Should I reiterate our conversation in the hidden chamber? Should I confide in her? I would have to someday, and the present was the best time for future plans.

“She… she… She French-kissed me. I’m beginning to think that she’s very strange.”

“She did what? She kissed you?” She turned her head to look behind her at Pesky and Teresa, who were talking standing very close to each other. “I can’t believe she did that. Did she say anything to you?” she asked me, still looking at them.

“She told me that she thought you were very cute and decided to take out her fantasies on me, I guess.” It all came out in one breath, and I didn’t have to worry about future plans anymore. Aime must not have caught everything I said.

“I asked her what she thought about you, once, a while back...” She turned to face me.

“What were you doing asking about her opinions about me? Were you trying to…” then, I thought about Martha’s inquisitions: some of the things she asked she had to have known how to ask them. Was Aime coaching people? What was she trying to do? “Are you trying to set me up?” It had to be a setup, and Aime was behind it all.

“Setup? No. You know that I would never do that. I just notice people looking at you, and since…” and she turned away. “Anyway, it doesn’t matter. It was just curiosity. She was looking at you during the welcome party. I was just curious, that’s all. Forgive me, John,” and she turned to me again. She tried to get a hold of my hands but my hands got a hold of her face first.

“Aime, I know that you’re looking out for my best interest. But, I have to do things in my own way and in my own time. You can’t rush a good bottle of wine.” I was caressing her face, telling her that she didn’t have to ask for forgiveness. I understood her. I knew that she meant well.

“All the same, I feel kind of guilty… all the things I tried to do… but it ends up being all fucked up in the end. I don’t even know why I try.”

“Because you care. That’s something that I can’t seem to do right now, and I’m lucky that you haven’t given up on me, yet.”

“I’ll never give up on you.” Her eyes vibrated crazily as she said that. “Come on, let’s get going before we both start crying.” She grabbed my hand, and the Sorceress was leading me through the labyrinth once again.

“Tell me, Aime,” I wanted to ask her a question before we reached Pesky and Teresa (and Aime, oh my!). “Did Sofia ever talk to you about us… about me... about our problems?” That was a stupid question, because I knew they talked often.

“Well, she was confused…” but we reached them too soon. She didn’t get to finish answering my question. Confused? Oh my gods, give me French fish!

My head was beginning to ache, dully. Someone was playing the bass with the bass turned up all the way. The twanging tensed up my body and my eyes started to blur. Confusion will be my epitaph... I stumbled on something that felt like feet, and I felt a sharp ringing in my ears. My head touched something cool and darkness swallowed my being.

There was a dog running up a path of moonlight to a man sitting still on a stone seat. He was guilty of cowardice, I hear. The greatest of all sins, as his personal assassin had uttered, was cowardice. The dog lied down at its master’s feet and stared at me. It was accusing me of something—accusing me of casting his master in stone. It wouldn’t let me get close to the stone man. I wanted to reach him. I wanted to forgive him, absolve him of his sin. I wanted to keep him from losing his head.

Then the darkness was breached and the Dark Savior arose from the Abyss and flew in my direction. His dark cloak became a mantle of stars behind him as he approached me. His finger was pointed directly at my heart, and when he was close enough to touch me, he touched my heart. “If you don’t want to lose your head,” he said, sounding like Sylvester the cat, still jabbing me in the heart, “you’ll have to cast away your pain. Be not afraid of the dark and things that go bump in the night. And as a warning, I present you a friend of mine.” The bronze horsemen arose before me. “This is just a foretaste of what happens to people who lose their heads.” Then, the horsemen lifted his sword above his head and decapitated himself, and the horror made me scream.

To be continued ......

Trust this makes things abudantly clear (?)

Way too long and rambling to read - could someone give me a précis? ;)

Certainly!

Tellurium - a chemical element:
Atomic Number: 52
Atomic Weight: 127.60
Melting Point: 722.66 K (449.51°C or 841.12°F)
Boiling Point: 1261 K (988°C or 1810°F)
Density: 6.232 grams per cubic centimeter
Phase at Room Temperature: Solid
Element Classification: Semi-metal
Period Number: 5 Group Number: 16 Group Name: Chalcogen

From the Latin word for earth, tellus.

Pronounced as te-LOOR-ee-em.

Tellurium was discovered by Franz Joseph Müller von Reichenstein, a Romanian mining official, in 1782. Reichenstein was the chief inspector of all mines, smelters and saltworks in Transylvania.

When he discovered tellurium, he thought he'd found antimony - a good job he didn't from Colin's point of view, because antimony is crap at conducting electricity.

Tellurium is a semiconductor and is frequently doped with copper, tin, gold or silver. Tellurium is also used to color glass and ceramics and is one of the primary ingredients in blasting caps.

Tellurium is primarily used as an alloying agent. Small amounts of tellurium are added to copper and stainless steel to make them easier to machine and mill. Tellurium is also added to lead to increase its strength and resistance to sulphuric acid.

Most importantly, if you put it on your cornflakes, it induces the Tellurium Delirium & makes you write stuff like that which Barry quoted.

I saw it yesterday as I, too, Googled Tellurium Delirium - it seems to be a chapter from some sort of online book called 'In a Nutshell'.

I'm sure you will change your mind Marco, & decide that your life has been nothing thus far without this book in your life once you have read the first two paragraphs:

An elephant emerged from behind the curtain carrying a stool, a microphone and a microphone stand. It took center stage, placed the stand in front of it, put the microphone into the cradle and sat down on the stool. After making sure everything was in its proper place, and checking to make sure that the stool would withstand its weight, it snapped its fingers and a spotlight lit it up. It blew into the microphone making sure that the feedback was just as annoying as its presence was for the physicists in the audience. “Ehem…” it said into the microphone, and its voice reverberated along the walls of the theatre.
“Good evening people. I’d like to start things off with a joke or two.” It paused for effect but it seemed that no one was paying it any attention. “Two soldiers were watching Moses as he led his people out of Egypt. One of the soldiers says to the other, ‘take a look at that! What a mass exodus.’ The other soldier replies, ‘Yeah! And in biblical proportions, too!’”
The audience made no sound and the elephant felt a bit nervous. It thought that itcould be that they had failed to understand it. The elephant shifted uncomfortably on the stool and put its mouth close to the microphone, again.

.............see what I mean? Gripping stuff! The first chapter is called 'Psychosis', by the way.........ahem!

Just read this thread end to end. In summary half a dozen guys think this cable is the bees knees with the designer joining in for good measure. Fair enough. And yes the cable range has had very good reviews. Better join the fun pdq!
On the other hand this phenomenon has happened before and is quite common on forums. A big hype, pile in but a year down the line the dust has settled and folk have moved on.
If this stands the test of time I'll investigate further but for now... I'll wait.

I'm at my brothers house, we've plumbed in his Tellurium Blues and I'm really impressed; they're linked into a veteran set of Paradigm Monitor 7's and we've got all sorts of music runing through it. I think the best benchmark for something is if it makes you smile, we're grinning like idots, the improved grip and control seems to run through the whole cable range :D

Btw, a little question for anyone that owns Californication, we listened to Scar Tissue up load and got a minute in (when the guitar kicks in) and heard a real nasty fuzz on it, we were worried it was the speakers so we did a troubleshooting exercise, in the end all the gear checked out ok, we put the CD into another player and the noise persisted, so we concluded it's the recording. I've never heard this songs flaws shown up like that before, can anyone else give it a test run and let us know what you hear please? The noise only comes out of the right channel (Btw, we were exhaustive and systematic in isolating the fault, it's definitely on the CD, not the gear).

My set of Blacks have passed the 50 hours mark now and at long last they are sounding sublime. A few evenings ago I made a conscious decision to pay a bit less attention to the bass and my perceptions of it in comparison to the Blues and focus far more on what the Blacks do very well indeed. To put it into context, the plus points of these Blacks far exceed that tiny little niggle I had and they bring alive a lot of recordings I didn't have much time for before. OK so the bass hasn't QUITE got that razor sharp leading edge of the Blue, although in percentage terms it would be around 10% less, but the bass is fullsome without any trace of boom or overhang, rich timbres and harmonics come shining through clearly, there is solidity and authority in abundance too, so what really do I have to complain about?

Last night for instance I put in the CD drawer some Blue Man Group which I generally only listened to one particular track before, pretty much despising the rest of the tracks because the music simply irritated me, but there I was last night not only listening to the whole album right through, but also putting it on for a second go because I was enjoying it so much :eyebrows:

Even the CDs I know pretty well that I haven't played for a while since getting the Blacks, like Ray Lamontagne have acquired a new level of clarity and sheer musical enjoyment with quite a few "not heard that before" moments thrown in for good measure that kept me truly gobsmacked for a few hours, so I am very much looking forward to another really good listening sesh tonight in a similar vein.

I found that the speaker cables made by far the biggest difference, then the single-ended interconnects (for vinyl playback) and least of all the XLR balanced interconnects. I'm glad I changed them all, but the speaker cables made by far the biggest bang for buck.

Marco would have been unable to determine what effect the TQs had as I had made too many system changes since his last visit (the Power Plant P10 being a biggie).

Mine have just passed the 50 hours mark Jerry and the "scrawn" will vanish a lot quicker than that but the bass needs the full monty to fill out and mature. Once the top end has straightened itself out then bung some live recorded music on and listen in complete awe as I am right now typing this :) They don't and probably never will have that exquisite teeth pulling and gut thumping bass transient power I love to bathe in (as you well know :eyebrows:) but all the other plusses this cable has far outweighs that sacrifice.

Hi Frank,

They don't and probably never will have that exquisite teeth pulling and gut thumping bass transient power I love to bathe in (as you well know) but all the other plusses this cable has far outweighs that sacrifice.

Without wishing to be provocative, how can any cables produce such an effect, if it isn't already on the recording?

Are you saying that you enjoy cables which superimpose that sonic signature onto the music, and therefore are a departure from neutrality, or that the TQs subdue that effect when it's present on the recording, or perhaps that they're not as coloured sounding in certain areas, as you'd like?

I'm just a bit confused by your comments :)

The best cables, for me, are those which have as little 'sound' of their own, as possible. The last thing I do with cables, is use them as tone controls... You simply want something which doesn't 'get in the way', as it were. Maximum resolution and transparency is the key, otherwise you're just applying an expensive bandage.

Jerry, you can pitch in here too, if you like!

Marco.

I love the transient quality of the TQ Ultra Blacks and they are as tight as hell in the bass. No sonic signature - I believe I said some way back that they sound as if the amp had been welded directly to the speakers.

Maybe Frank misses the 'fat' but less accurate bass of inferior cables?

AlanS
30-05-2012, 10:58
I am a TQ Black user, changed from Cable Talk 3.1.

Sorry to speak for Frank if I'm on the wrong track but I see it like this.

Power of any ac kind, acoustic, mains is Volts and Amps, giving watts driving power.

To my ear TQ Black lets all the volts through, thus making audible much detail. But when it comes to amps, power driving ability seems on a throttle, limited, 35 bhp not 200 bhp or watts for bhp. So you hear bass whilst upper frequencies are delivered with all most the same volume/power.

I wont begin to use words like neutral, innaccurate, sonic signature etc. They show a lot of what is on the source I cant believe so much music is bass restrained.

TQ Black are on a lead and restrained in lower, higher current signals. The signals are there but restained. Explain that however it pleases you.

Marco
30-05-2012, 11:11
Fair enough, Alan. In your system, it's what YOU hear that counts.

I wonder if Martin would agree, however? Certainly, from what I heard of his system a couple of weeks ago, with TQ Ultra-Black in the equation, I wouldn't have recognised it from this description:

To my ear TQ Black lets all the volts through, thus making audible much detail. But when it comes to amps, power driving ability seems on a throttle, limited, 35 bhp not 200 bhp.

 But then, his huge Ushers have twin 12" drivers, per side, being driven by something like 350WPC....

Therefore, the results heard will simply be system (and room) dependent, as always! :)

A shame you didn't stop by on the 4.1 and Concert cables they did, with superior insulation and heavier gauge in the latter cables. Too late now though unless you could find some used (the cable shouldn't have gone off as this was the whole point of the stuff..)

Ok, we need to be careful to differentiate here between Black and Ultra Black speaker cables. The UB's have no lack of bass in either extension or power whatsoever.

I'm wondering if small(er) speakers (and/or systems lacking in a little 'heft') are simply benefiting from bass 'bloom', present in other cables, mistaken for genuine low-end extension?

In effect; the cables, in that situation, are acting as a form of tone control.

The effect of such coloration may seem 'entertaining', but a departure from accuracy (as in accurate to what was present in the recording that left the studio), therefore in that sense, the TQs are more neutral sounding, but in terms of their bass response, not ideal in systems which require some added 'heft'.

Seems reasonable, no?

Marco.

Indeed, the number of times I've cleaned up the sound of a system only to hear it apparently go lighter in the bass is a large number. What usually happens is that improvements tend to tighten bass and deepen its extension. What the uninitiated ear hears is 'less bass' until you acclimatise yourself to it, especially in a system with small speakers.

I really dislike fat, loose, uncontrolled bass.

And the same also applies, when the resulting sound is superfically 'darker', which usually means simply that a false 'grain' and/or treble emphasis (distortion) has been removed, thus making the sound cleaner, and in fact MORE dynamic than before! ;)

You can end up making a lot of 'wrong turns' and bad decisions, in terms of system building, if the sound you're listening to, as the benchmark from which to judge, buying components and ancillaries on that basis, has significant elements of coloration present, simply because often you end up 'blaming' something which actually wasn't responsible for what it was you were hearing that you didn't like...

Marco
30-05-2012, 13:22
Ah, gotcha now!

Still, superb recordings (if they genuinely are superb) should always sound progressively more superb, as one's system is improved, and thus reveals more of what's contained in those recordings.

What also happens, of course, is that bad or mediocre recordings sound progressively worse, as your system gets better, simply because it reveals more of their deficiencies...

Welcome to the world of transparency (and what a hi-fi system should be all about)! ;)

I took the time to sort out the low pass filter according to my speakers cut off recently. At first it sounded like there wasnt enough bass in the music, but I'd gotten used to having it 'cranked up'.

I went a few days with this new setup and now it sounds great, it gives the rest of the music room to breathe; the bass doesn't dominate it; rather it compliments the overall sound.

I don't think it's a case of less being more, it's more about balance and neutrality makes for better reproduction.

Marco
30-05-2012, 13:37
Precisely, and that's exactly what Martin and I have been saying. It's so easy getting used to a 'false' type of sound, and then when hearing something rather more neutral, at first thinking that it's 'wrong', when in fact it is actually more 'right'...

Marco.

realysm42

It's difficult, especially when the only thing you have to compare/benchmark against is your own stereo and/or opinion.

I think that's what makes this whole hi-fi thing fraiught with 'danger'; a lot of measurements, whilst having meaning in the right context often can't tell you much in terms of quality, how does one scientifically measure how good something sounds, especially when it's so subjective?

Also, we look outwards (and to an extent rightly so) at our gear, setup, technique etc. What about inwards? I've got an opinion on what sounds good, but I know nothing about playing instruments, the key of music playing even how good my hearing is etc.

Ultimately, knowledge and technique take us so far but the real test is if it makes me smile

I'd much rather hear a 'bad' setup that sounds good to me than a technically perfect stereo that sends me to sleep

It's a kind of 'in-joke' around here too, Mike! ;)

On a serious note, though, you may well find that, in some ways, your old Akai Gx265, Rotel Amp, Leak 2075 system was more fun to listen to, even if the sound it made wasn't strictly as accurate.

The fact is, some systems and equipment can flatter certain recordings (such as your favs), but usually fall apart, when given something of genuine high-fidelity to work with.

That's also why certain music, played on an LP12 (of a certain vintage) doesn't sound 'right', when played on anything else, and those selling them at the time knew it... You can either continue working within the confines of your system's inherent colorations, or broaden your sonic horizons (and music collection), working towards greater fidelity.

Marco.

To answer your question Marco, I like my struck bass to have a very clean leading edge and an even cleaner trailing edge with no boom or overhang at all - the way a transient should be. Snare drums for example must have the crisp 'crack' in the sound that the actual drum has otherwise for me it sounds rather artificial. I don't mean P.R.A.T that the Naim boys like either :nono:

Once the system had settled down (or I had got used to it) I started thinking about trying some more expensive cables. The rest of system runs Paul's (RFC) Venus rca cables; they're very good and I would have been happy to try an xlr version. He doesn't do demo cables, though, and as there is a fair bit of comment around that XLR cables are less fussy, I didn't want to spend a fortune with no return possible. I came across a pair of used Tellurium Q ultra blacks at 80% of new full price on a banned memeber's website. "Returns possible, but no-one's ever returned Tellurium Qs", he said.

Red rag to a bull, a challenge I was up for. Got them today, plumbed them in, and ... I lost: they're not going back ! Wonderful cables. realysm42's last post pretty much sums it up, without the touch of roughness, but mine should be well run in, if you believe in that kind of thing.

Saw this post last night so plumbed in the tq ultra black.

The 57s are funny buggers cable wise the tqub just doesnt gell with them (neither does tq black in a single run).

Ended up trying VD blue 6mm doubled up/rhodium twist doubled up/tq black doubled up.

The tq black doubled up has stayed in-the best balance I can achieve.

I do often wonder why some folks cant hear differences between cables-synergy is the goal IMHO.

You can definitely hear differences with TQ cables. Make of that what you will.

I can't get over this. CDs I know really well like:

sound completely different, as if it's a different set of players. There's so much more going on, too, and instruments sound like real ones. The Bach cantatas I've listened to every Sunday for 30 years now have a choir with individual voices instead of a mass of sound. I could go on, but I've other things to do ! :)

Just put them in; instantly sounding better in most aspects.

Sounds a lot more open, every frequency sounds like it's got room to do it's own thing. Still sound a bit... rough? similar to when I first the speaker cables, I assume (hope) that as they burn in this will settle down.

Sold, I think.

Another good design by me, he he
