Oh, I can. Look at how many people read the Sun. Doesn't say anything about quality.

You posted just about what I was thinking Martin :rfl:
They should be more discerning & read the Mail instead
:lolsign:
I rarely read newspapers - I treat them all with equal contempt - but The Sun is a paper that perfectly caters for its target audience: the 'working man', and it's style of writing, given that audience, is exemplary.
The journalist who write is are craftsmen, and the headline writers are poetic geniuses.
As for the hifi mags, I'm surprised at how how the first three are. As for the last, well, I do look at the website and read the forum occasionally, but I have quickly realised that most of the posters there slavishly repeat the editorial opinion. Ask a simple question and half a dozen identical responses appear. It's as if the people there are afraid to experiment with more esoteric equipment.
The same question here will bring about a dozen different answers, but intertwined in the dynamic way of a true conversation.
It's this kind of forum that has led me to try equipment I would never have considered and never knew existed.

What Hi-Fi is the only one sold in Tesco's now. Which says it all. It's widely available and picked up by the casual buyer. You have to rumage on the bottom shelves of my local W H Smith to find the others and they are usualy out of Hi-FI News for some reason. Any figures for Hi-Fi + or has it's circulation dropped to total insignificance ?
WTF is full of TV's in any case..... The circulation of the others is much the same as it was over fifteen years ago.
If your not into hi fi as much as us the other mags would sound like double dutch i guess.
With what hifi i'am guessing it's easier for the masses to digest.
I don't ever buy a hi-fi mag to be honest but the missus bought me a copy of WTF to read while I was in hospital last week. Two small articles about speakers was the total lip service they paid to anything related to hi-fi, the rest was TVs, iPods, ear buds and 3D/blue ray film releases. They should change the mag's title to summat else methinks

That's because these seem like UK circulation figures from about 10-15 years ago. Sadly, today's figures are a pale shadow of those antiques, for all of us.
Hi-Fi World no longer audits its circulation (neither does Hi-Fi+) so its true sales figures now are played close to its chest. As are ours. We all have our spies that provide Point Of Sale figures and there is no way I will divulge those numbers. The others all audit, so their figures are a matter of public record if you know where to look.
Advertisers must be advised of the circulation figures though, surely?
So, in short, this whole thread is complete conjecture based on incorrect figures.

I don't think the mags provide circulation figures to their advertisers. Not since the days when they had figures to be proud of..

If they ask, we tell. Many don't ask. They support the magazine because the like the magazine, and because it has an effect on their sales, whether through the readers directly, or through their own promotional reprints of reviews published in that title. The reader numbers are to many immaterial.

Rather than start a new thread a few thoughts on the changes at World / Choice based on the relevant websites.
Noel Keywood is editing World. This of course is likely temporary until a successor to DP is found. Otherwise format and contributors appear the same. Adam is doing a review on the Redbeard Garrard bearing which may be of interest to many at AOS.
David Price is now editor at Choice. Interestingly a flock of ex Hi-FI World reviewers have been recruited including Patrick Cleasby, Tim Jarman and Channa Vithana. They are also expanding the letters page. Unfortunately the (pointless?) blind listening tests are continuing as the 'unique' feature. Hope DP eventualy puts these to bed.
Will have to pop out and buy both now !

The masses will generally buy what they see on the shelves, they seldom hunt publications out. The other publications need to make sure that the masses see their publications, otherwise they become a very niche publication.
It's very much like true HiFi, the manufacturers need to educate the public more in the virtues of quality, otherwise sub standard mp3 will totally become the norm and high quality will become very rare.
Make quality, educate people and make it easily available.
I'am not into cameras,so if i wanted to buy a mag i'd buy a what camera type one over the more technical one i don't understand.
I'am guessing people who are after a system would do exactly the same.
Makes sense to me.

David - what was your source for this ??
According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations - http://www.abc.org.uk :
Hi-Fi News and Record Review 11,153 total average circulation per issue 1/1/2010 - 31/12/2010
What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision? 44,764 total average circ. per issue 1/1/2010 - 31/12/2010
Hi-Fi Choice - data not available due to change of ownership
Hi-Fi World - no longer ABC members (circulation for 1/1/2000 to 31/12/2000 was 12,177)

Agreed. But of course, as you become better versed, then you'll turn to those more technical publications to give you a more insightful take.
Until you are able to digest the more technical aspects, you will continue to baulk at the ideal of someone paying £500 for a flashgun (or whatever) when you can get something 'just as good' from ebay for 10% of the price.

Hi,
If you click on the link and put in hi-fi Choice, the page comes up. Click on the certificate at the bottom left.
You will see the figure for 2010 as being 7267.
No wonder they changed the editor.

Hi Keith,
Interesting... What about Hi-Fi+ ? :)
Marco.
Not members of ABC and, as Alan Sircom says earlier in this thread (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=282261&postcount=9), they want to keep those figures very close to their chest...
Ah, ok... I'm not surprised! ;)
Marco.
