Hello,

Thought I'd propose a 'light' thread: What was your progression of turntables?
And, if you want, you can add what you have an eye on for the future.

Here's mine (so far):

- Pioneer PL 15 (mid 70s)
- Philips GA-212 w/ Stanton cart. (late 70s)
- Luxman PD-272 w/ Micro-Acoustics cart. (late 70s)
- Thorens TD-160 w/ Shure, Denon DL-110 carts ('79/'80)
- Rega Planar 2 (s-arm) w/ above Denon, Micro-Seiki LC-80 (wish I still had it) carts
- Micro-Seiki BL-51 w/ Magnepan Unitrac arm & Dynavector Ruby, Grados (various)
- Sota Sapphire w/ Well-Tempered Arm & Grados (various)

**a system that knocked me out years ago had a Michel Gyrodec, Dynavector arm, and Goldring Electro MC cart. - might be on my horizon?

Best,
Barry :)

Here are mine:

- Garrard 2025TC inside a Dansette music centre, some ceramic cartridge
- Connoisseur BD1 with SME3009-II arm in my own plinth, Goldring G800 cartridge
- Matsushita direct drive motor & platter with SME III arm in my own plinth with my own design power supply, Ortofon MC10 cartridge
- Michell Syncro with Helius Aureus arm, Ortofon MC20 cartridge
- Roksan Xerxes with SME IV arm and Mk. II power supply, AT OC9 cartridge
- (some years with no deck)
- Strathclyde STD-305M with Michell TecnoArm, Dynavector 20A2 cartridge
- Technics SL-1210 with Dynavector DV507-II arm, very heavily modified, Shelter 5000 cartridge

My current deck is by far the best sounding.

There are probably some missing(!) but I'll do my best...oh, I've star-rated as to what I felt about the deck at the time, scores are no relative to eachother.

BSR BDS95/Shure M75EJ **** (was my first TT so thought it was awesome - got my 222 and realised the BSR was pretty crap) ;)
Sansui SR222Mk2 *** Carts: Ortofon FF15E/VMS20E/Grado F3E+
Rega Planar 3/R200 **** Carts: Rega R100/VMS20E
Rega Planar 3/RB300 ***** Carts: Rega RB100/Coral MC88E
Linn LP12/Basik Plus **** Carts: A&R E77/Supex SM100E
Manticore Mantra/Basik Plus **** (darn close to the LP12 in fact)Carts: Stilton MP10SB/Linn Basik
AR EB101 ** Linn Basik/Glanz MFG11EX
Thorens TD166 Mk2 * Carts: Nag MP11/Linn Basik/Linn K9
Rega Planar 2/RB250 **** Carts: AT95E/AT-F5
Linn LP12/Lingo1/Naim Aro ***** sold the Lingo & Aro whence the LP12 became...
LP12/Akito *** Carts: Linn K5/Roksan Corus Black
Michell Gryodec/RB300 **** Linn K5/Corus Black/AT-OC9/DL103
NAS Spacedeck/Heavy/OL-modded RB250 **** Carts: DL103
NAS Spacedeck/Heavy/Spacearm ***** Carts: DL103/DL103R/Lyra Dorian/Ortofon MC15 Super/Dynavector DV17d2/Stilton P77
Pioneer PL71 ***** Carts: Lyra Dorian/DL103/Decca Super Gold/Ortofon SPU
Technics SL1210 (No1) ** Carts: Dorian/MC15 Super
Technics SL1210 (No2) *** Carts: DL103/Dorian
Thorens TD150/SME 3009 II non-Imp **** Carts: Audio Note IQ3
Rega P7 *** Carts: Audio Note IQ3
Garrard 401/SME 3009 II non-Imp **** Carts: Shure Jico-SAS 75ED
Pioneer PL-71 ***** Carts: DL103/Shure-Jico SAS 75ED
Technics SL1210 M3D ****1/2 ;) Carts: Shure-Jico SAS 75ED

As to the future - who knows. Out of all the above I'd stick my neck out and say that the most enjoyable decks above were the NAS/Space/Dorian and the PL71 fitted with the Decca. Trying to re-capture the best bits of both of them - the sense of scale/gravitas of the NAS/Lyra combo with the sheer no-holes-barred adrenalin fix of the 71/Decca is something that's going to be very hard to achieve. Still, it's all good fun....I think.

SME 20.2

...junk... then

Technics "MK2 Quartz" decks

I would like to add a slammin' idler to the fold, one day. Practicality, would probably demand I go for the Salvation (as a plug and play option) rather than fight time and budget restraints, in order to rebuild/modify a Garrard or Lenco.

Like many, it seems, I started in the mid-70s with a crappy BSR autochanger, then:

Thorens TD166, with JVC MM cartridge
Linn LP12 (Valhalla, Cirkus), Ittok, A&R P77, later upgraded with Ekos arm.
DIY HiFi Supply Bix - nice idea, very poor execution.
Nottingham Spacedeck, Heavy Kit, Wave mechanic, Space Arm
Kenwood KD-770D (still have it)
Technics SL-1210 (now with Paul Hynes)
Lenco GL75 x 2 - one in pieces, the other in full working order but unused.
Thorens TD124 Mk2, in Jim Campbell Ortofon-style plinth with Audio Note new Arm3.

The ones that I remember most fondly are the LP12 for teaching me about listening to music; the Spacedeck for its ease of use and delicacy even if it didn't exactly have much propulsive 'drive'; the Kenwood for its calm musicality, which was in stark contrast to the SL-1210 which I really did not like, even after spending loads on PSU, mat, support and bearing upgrades. The TD124 is a complicated thing, very tweaky, but by far the most satisfying turntable that I've owned and the one that I shall probably keep for ever. I'd have the LP12 back, though, now that I understand why I could never set it up properly.

As I have probably owned more turntables than the rest of the forum put together, I shall restrict myself to those used in my main system, which is surprisingly few!

- Garrard RC210 in a Bush RP51 portable record player. I was around 5 and scared of all the clunks and bangs it made!

- BSR P267 in an Amstrad RP10 record player. Yes, I know.....

- BSR something else in the mighty Amstrad TS56 Tower System. Even at my relatively tender age, I felt sure that the fact you could hear a continuous thunk, thunk thunk of the platter's raised ribs passing under the stylus during quiet bits was a bad thing...

- Garrard 630S in a Bush music centre. Starting to improve now...

- Hitachi PS-17. Lovely deck and the sleekest, smoothest auto return action I have ever seen on a turntable!

- Garrard 301/SME 3009/Shure M75ED. Given to me by my uncle.

The 301 is still the deck I use to this day, nearly 20 years later. It's had a new plinth and been through an Audio Technica AT1130 arm, onto an Alphason HR-100S and is currently sporting an Audio Note Arm Two/II. Cartridges have included a Shure V15III (in the old SME) and then onto an AT33, Yamaha MC-1, an Audio Technica AT-OC9, an Ortofon MC10 Super and I'm now mainly using an Ortofon Kontrapunkt b.

No further upgrades planned at the moment, although I wouldn't say no to a slate plinth, SME V or an Ortofon MC Jubilee!

Doesn't really matter what I've been through... I still have the Garrard after 25 years, and it will never leave my ownership as long as I have a choice in the matter... Please allow me the indulgence of elaboration... :)

Approximately 23 years ago, I acquired my first flat, and moved out from home. As part of my "designer 80s pad" my 401's plinth was spray painted white... (Some of you may remember the pics.) This matched the room, but it still wasn't good enough for the then girlfriend, who later became my wife... So, the 401 was consigned to a wardrobe, and I went on the hunt for a replacement. I can't recall the model, but I came home with a Dual something or other - minus dust cover, which I picked up at "Second Hand Land" in the scummy area of Norwich... Dual duly installed, I waited for the seal of approval, only to be told it was "ugly" and to get rid of it immediately... This set off a very unusual occurrence - I lost my temper (as far as I can recall, only the second time in my life it had happened, and even now, I can barely get passed the fingers of one hand for how many times it has happened...) Anyway, in a Basil Fawlty moment, I picked up the poor Dual, and beat it to death on the newly acquired black-ash sideboard, before depositing it on the equally 80's grey cord (99p a square metre!) carpet, or at least the bits that were still attached to what was left of the plinth...

The then girlfriend duly stormed out, and went to the telephone box on the corner and rang my best mate. He came round to calm me down, and she sped off in her Fiesta Bonus, only returning when she felt I may have climbed down off the ceiling...

When she walked in, my mate had kindly picked up all the various broken pieces, and they were sitting neatly in a pile. Her words were "can you fix it...?" Suffice to say, the 401 was pressed back in to service, and I never heard a peep from her again about my turntable... I still have the 401, wife #1 went 10 years ago!

1969 Garrard SP25 Mk II (?)

1970 Collaro 2020 rim-drive with the arm replaced with an SME 3009

1971 Thorens 124 Mk II with SME 3009

since then two more Thorens 124/II's with a variety of arms and an EMT 930 with 929 arm and cartridges.

No plans to acquire any more, though an EMT 938, Thorens 125/II or Luxman PL131 still have a certain seduction for me.

Love the story Alex!

For me, in order:

Garrard - can't remember model, but it was my folks (possibly a 25 or 75?)
Dual CS505mkII with Ortofon cart. Upgraded cart to A&R 77 (possibly P?)
Briefly a Thorens TD166mkII, with Nagaoka Stilton MP11 (both of which I still have)
A&R Legend with Linn Basik arm
Linn Axis with Akito/K18
Linn Sondek/Valhalla/Ittok/OC9 - I loved this deck!!
Modded it:
Origin Live DC motor, PSU & OL1 arm - ruined it. Never right after that. So I sold it for...
Technics 1210 as below!!

First was a Garrard auto-changer in a Bush SRP31C, then a device made from the platter, bearing and motor of an ERA444 mounted on a piece of 1" chipboard with a Transcriptors unipivot, then the same bits mounted on a T-shaped chassis made from shelving unit uprights suspended from three Morris 1100 throttle return springs, all built into an old chest of drawers (why did I do that?). Then the same bits back in a heavier chipboard plinth but with a glass platter, then big change to a Heybrook TT2, first with a very used Helius Orion, then a Rega RB300, then after a 20-year gap, a home-made idler using a spare TT2 platter and bearing and an Akai 4000DS motor mounted in a multi-layer plywood plinth, then the same bits mounted in a 2-layer slate plinth, then a Formula 4 to replace the Rega, then the same slate bits but with a Dual 701 DD motor replacing the Akai/idler. Also experimented with a home-made unipivot made from a bit of titanium tube. Worked OK but not as good as the formula 4.

Cartridges have been Ortofon MC20, some Highphonic thing which Heybrook imported briefly which sounded fantastic for about 10 hours then went flat and dull, as they all seemed to do, then a succession of Denon 103s and 304s. Also had a Technics EPC450C strain-guage cart, but never managed to cobble up a suitable power supply for it. Wonder where it's gone...

Phillips semi auto , cheap and nasty.

Dual 505 mk2 with Ortofon OM30

Logic Tempo with Datum arm and A&R P77

Linn LP12 with basik plus p77
Same with Ittok

Then same with K9 , followed by Ekos and Troika , upgraded with Lingo and Cirkus and finally Trampolinn .

Sold above and got a Voyd .5 with the reference PSU and motor mass dampers , ref bearing and Lexan platter , fitted with SME 310 and MusicMaker cart by Kevin Scott.

Downgraded to a Roksan Radius with Nina and 1006 cart.

Currently use a Vantaged SLQL1 and an out of sorts 1210 with SME 309 with no PSU ! Soon to be fully Vantaged , still not sure about my cartridge but will be very happy just to see this thing working again !

When I am really bored I should rewire the PL-71 arm 9" with Silver and use the PL-71 deck again to see how I feel about it compared to the SP-10.

Thanks AlexUK! I've learned a valuable lesson: Go totally apeshit and scare the crap out of the missus and I won't have to listen to her incessant whining anymore. You could write these down and sell them in a self-help book.

Best,
Barry

I have not had many TTs in my journey.

ITT portable jobbie (1974)
Amstrad TP12D (late 70s)
Garrard DD130 (end of the 70s)
Townshend Rock MkII with RB250 and DL110 (1986 to date).

The Rock has had the same arm since new but it has been totally rewired and foam filled and had the earth mod by AO, it has the OL structural mod too. I also have a 200gramme counterwieght for the rebodied DL103 (it's heavy).

Cartridges I have used are (in no order) DL110 x2, Goldring Eroica, G800, Shure M75, Grado something or other, Goldring 1022 then 1042 and a DL103 standard and then rebodied with an aluminium body, this is waiting to go to Soundsmith as I ripped the cantilever off (idiot).

At the moment I am using a 1042 goldie.

The serious sequence started in 1968 with:
Garrard SL75
Connoisseur BD-1 with SME 3009 mk2
Technics SP 10 with same SME
Linn LP12 Valhalla, Ittok, Troika
Roksan Xerxes, Rega RB300
Goldmund Reference bought in the early 90s and still in use, though it needs a service when I can be bothered...

I have played around with:-
Thorens TD125 with Mission arm, now given to my daughter
Technics SL-15 which never worked properly from new and ended up in the tip.
