View Full Version : 2012 Vinyl replay upgrades ?

So what are you thinking of upgrading in 2012 and why?
For me its,
1, Replace drivers in SBL's. Mine are over 22 years old now, so its time imo (if adding these does what the new Crossovers have, I'll be more than happy).
2, Dedicated Mains/Consumer/8x 6 or 10mm/Sockets. This should hopefully get me a nice clean mains, unlike what I'm getting atm.
3, Naim Supercap (replace Hicap) on Superline. (Home demo'd one a while back) was in total shock, everything was enhanced, Imaging, Soundstage depth,Dynamics, like having a heavy veil removed.
4, Demo, Funk platter, Mike New platter.
5, Towards the end of the year a new Arm/Cart combo for the techie,(not sure which atm) if my current Techie whips the LP12 into submission, if not I'll be looking at the LP12, new arm or cart.
I have no intention of changing the Amp side of things atm.
Don't you just love Vinyl replay.
Probably not much - unless I win the lottery of some other financial windfall occurs. Hope to do the following:
Electronic speed controller for my lenco
New cartridge?
I think I need to save up for new speakers and possibly amps first.

I've got a few component upgrades planned for the cdp and amps. Maybe an interconnect or two.
I'll be picking my SP-10 up over Xmas and will be sorting out a plinth for it sometime soon.
The rest of my money will be spent on music.
I'm going to re-build my entire deck, including the arm!

There i think all my wages should have been spent!
New belt for the voyd and get the arm rewired and bearings looked at by audio origami.
I think I'll look at the amp side of things- either a naim 82 or 202 pre on my way to to 282 at some point down the line. Will also look for a linn arm for my lp12 to replace the basic I currently have.
But the one thing I have sworn to do is take advantage of a job change which will allow me to regularly record shop in Glasgow- I need to get away from napster as a lazy way to get new music and start to build my collection more.

1. Try to figure out how to get the most out of what I have (vintage c-j MV75/PV2a, SOTA Sapphire/WTA/Grado Sig. 8, Spendor SP 1s)
2. Inexpensive 78 table - probably a Dual?
3. Increase my knowledge w/ listening here, reading (Unfortunately here, the golden days of the hi-fi shop are over, where you could hear most of what you wanted by traveling b/w a few shops w/ a hand-full of records in tow. Luckily, I'm old enough to have lived through that era, but alas, I have a very dated frame of reference...) Perhaps in the UK people still have that experience and don't purchase 'blind' off the internet based on glossy reviews, etc. Topic for another day.

* build a pair of Dyna MkIII power amps w/ Poseidon driver boards

* 78 rpm mod
* new platter (have to decide first)

* finish electronics enclosure/conversion with full "cap job"
Loudspeakers
* try Magnepan MMG's with fast subs
As if that's not enough to accomplish, I'd really like to overhaul my other PR99MkI and one of the CT-F1250's.
If I aim high, I have a much better chance of actually completing 2 or 3 of the above. ;)

That's something I've been doing for the last 3 years, getting parts serviced, tweaking here and there, it's only been this year that I've started to upgrade as i thought I'd reached the maximum my system could give.

New cartridge for me, totally confused what to get but will get there eventually
Ortofon 2M Black, Oyaide headshell, pgetting round to putting an used SME V on my second Techie:)
Get my Croft preamp fettled with Glenn. Think about whether I really need the TD125, especially after the Lenco rebuild project is completed and get my CD playing devices sorted before anything else because the Micro is so good and although the two-supply Digit is very good, it ain't anything like as good as the Micro Seiki was on long term listening..

Finish the rebuild on the Thorens inc its new chassis/frame; Build alternative PSU for same; Rebuild and rewire Hadcock; The rest is digital.....
Very much fine tuning this year.
Next project:
Paul Hynes internal regulator upgrades for SL-1210 (need peace, steady hand and lots of light).

If they're not overdriven, the SBL drivers shouldn't have gone off over the years. However, the mk2 bass units did perform rather better right from their introduction, so you should notice a less coloured sound, still brightly lit, but smoother, making ALL sources easier to live with. just take HUGE care in rebuilding the SBL's and fit fresh pads and gaskets if they've been in situ for a few years - but you hopefully know all this in any case :)

Mine have MkII drivers, but even these are getting on now, you probably right about them not going off etc, but after replacing the Crossovers with new a little over two months ago i was blown away by the difference, even tho i had read elsewhere that it wouldn't make any difference to the sound, and as i won't be upgrading these for quite some time (if ever), i thought it would be the next step in the chain after having all my Naim gear serviced this year.
My dealer is under the same impression as you tho, was even about the Crossovers(he got that wrong)so we'll just have to see.
I won't be doing the fitting (local dealer), or they may even go back to Naim for fitting, yes i know about the gaskets/pads and mastic, made me sweat the first time but i've done it approx 8 to 10 times over the years.

PS Dave are you a Naim fan? reading between the lines tells me you know their gear?

This sounds an interesting upgrade, a petrol generator, perhaps this would get rid of the noise pollution through my sytstem :scratch: :rfl:

I too am looking forward to your review on the reg upgrade. No doubt this is going to take some time and a lot of real hard listening as i don't think there will be to much difference. But i hope the benefits outweigh the cost.
Yes indeed, I've no idea what to expect, if anything, from this upgrade. It will be a fair amount of work and this will need to be balanced against its cost. We shall see.

More or less content with my main system and hoping to spend time on the music. For 2012 any excess energy needs to do something constructive with the spare TD150 and LP12 parts I've accumulated. Mmm ;)

Hope everything gets back on track. I think if I do the mods i'll be buying a spare 1210 pcb just in case I f"!k things up.
It's not the PCB I'm worried about - yet! It's the damnable die cast posts that split if you try to use anything slightly larger than the original self-tappers that I've lost. So the solution is easy - drill through the posts so that I can use nuts and bolts to hold the PR-3 module in place. Then the drill bit breaks - in the post! :steam:
Tomorrow is a new day. I'm not speaking to the Technics until the morning.

Sorry to hear of your woes Martin :( I have a feeling it'll all be worth the slight upset now though once completed ;)
After all, not only will the regulator be much nearer what it's supplying (lower impedance) but the control circuitry will be isolated from the power pulses of the motor coils. In theory that is two very significant upgrades in performance already :)
Then to top it all off you'll be feeding these new regulators with a superbly regulated supply :D
Chiil out for a bit chap & get your perspective back, it'll soon be in the past :cool:
