Excellent little product, does the job admirably, gonna get another, only with more power ;)

You cannot have enough T amps in my opinion, one of mine is the Muse 50w jobbie, and it sounds very, very good:)

What would a 50w rms unit actually be comfortable driving in terms of power against impedance as they are rather intriguing but seem to be variously "over-hyped"?

Try a TA2020 T-amp amp for a faster, more transparent and more open sound. ;)

Unless you really need the extra power in your system. Power is much over-rated, imo!

had this little beauty pumping out sounds all day yesterday, seems to be a real bargain and even the missus liked the sound, which seems to convey very good higher frequency reproduction. good enough to use with the mini system in the kitchen through the phones output (I somehow managed to break the spring clipped speaker outputs so would have had to ditch the unit if i hadn't got the t amp, which i was sceptical about being so cheap, but hey, it's great) :)

Sorry Jerry and Mark, I was not thinking of absolute power as such just trying to get an idea of where these amps fit into the spectrum, possibly for a bi-amp setup.

I understand that the 2020 is quoted by the majority of builders and users as the best sounding version (although some expressed opinions run contrary to this), and despite being able to deliver short bursts of high power, they run out of steam on bass. Although quoted as 20w rms, many quote their realistic power as about 5w rms. Hence the bloody stupid Johnson question about realistic power.

Since these bass frequencies are where power is really sunk, I was curious whether this was due to the response of the chip or other limitation?

The TA2020 is around 8wpc/8Ohms and 13wpc/4Ohms i believe. The 20w rating is at 4Ohms/10%THD.

Bob,
The temple audio mono blocks are excellent wee devices. The gain is variable via the power button on the front, there is also a high and low gain output socket on the rear. I have only ever used them with the low gain output. They have all the benefits of a t amp sonically with the oomph of a ss amp. I bi-amp with 4 of them and have yet to get them flustered.
The original bantum I have is a lovely sounding amp...a keeper-it just runs out of steam when pushed hard....very similar to a art audio valve amp I had for a while.
Tony.

Thanks Rob and Tony.
That is why am curious about this. Ok, Temple may make their own monoblocs or tweak and rebadge perhaps, but at 190 quid each and 2 per channel, that is why I was curious whether these Muse T-amps or similar could fulfill the same duty, with similar performance at a quarter of the price.
At the not so outrageous levels I listen to, 13W might just have enough belt, but for bass duty, I really am not sure...
Time to start measuring what I am listening to.......

Temple Audio use an Analogue Devices chip. Same idea as the Tripath, but a more modern implementation so they say. The presentation is a little different to the Tripath chips.

I currently have the AMPtastic T-Amp (TA2020) and a Bantam Gold here in my small 8ft square (roughly) room with small ~80dB speakers and get more than enough volume. They are very easy load on the amp though.

FWIW, I prefer the TA2020 to the Bantam, the Bantam has slightly deeper bass and relaxed presentation, where as I find the TA2020 more livley and open in the midrange. Vocals are more forward in the soundstage with the TA2020 and have a little more weight with the Bantam Gold.

I'm loving my little T amp, it's been in almost constant use since the day it arrived. I've got another arriving today that will be hooked up to the pc, that's assuming i can get near the pc, the missus is somewhat obsessed with fashion designer on facebook. by the time i get my scraps the keypad is covered in blood

Would you say there is a huge difference between the AMPtastic amps and the Muse? The price is quite a lot higher for what appears to be very similar specs?

If l can put me two peneth in, the Mini-T is quite a bit better than the Muse M50, l have the 2A PSU,then when l brought the MUSE which has a 4A PSU, l put the 4A PSU on the Mini -T and there was a noticable lift in sound- l put a lot of this down to being able to plug a Nordost Shiva into thhe 4A PSU( l was told that T-Amps respond well to aftermarket power cords and experimentation concurs with this, in short the Mini-T is wonderfully smooth, full, 3D and has great tonal colouring and very very musical, the downsides are on some recordings that are mixed to a low volume, it run out of puff, but for me in my 12x11 it is ok and one input, but the sound quality is so high you tend to forget about these things. l would love to hear this amp with some Audionotes:cool: The MUSE sounds quite alot more powerful and all the things that come with the extra power 25w into 8ohmns in my small room is all l need it really does go loud! Downsides compared to the Mini-T are a slight drop in musicality and and a slight greying to the sound but as l said it is slight. Depending on your room size, speakers, equipment etc you really cannot go wrong with either amp, but for ultimate sound quality the Mini-T is quite remarkable.:)

No, imo it's not a huge difference.

Is it worth twice the price? Probably not, when looked at like that.

Is it worth another £20-30 or so? ... YES !!!! :D

My first T-Amp is currently sitting under the Christmas tree :eyebrows: if not I'll be very disappointed on Sunday!!

Its a Bantam classic, and will be driving a pair of Orthodynamic headphones.

Having read the threads, I am still confused about the PSU options  Has anyone got any recommendations??The stock one is 12v 1.5amps though as long as you maintain 12v presumably you can go over the 1.5a?? Or will I be blowing up my new toy!!!!

No, it doesn't matter how many amps the supply will output. Whatever it is supplying will only take however many amps it needs. In fact, it's probably better to overspec in this respect, as the easier time the supply is having, the cleaner the supply will be generally.

BTW, I'd recommend the MCRU power supplies. Not silly money and they are very good.

Thanks Ali, I was pretty certain than the amperage was not relevant, or at least, that the device only draws what is required. Being pretty sure, and having complete peace of mind are two different things!

Thanks for the recommendation. I had come accross those supples and was, are still, very tempted, but might be a bit out of budget. If I'd realised sooner I could have worked something out with David as he's just purchased a pf30 from me

As Ali said, it'll only draw what it needs to power the load ;) Just make sure you do not use a PSU that can't supply enough current ;)

Anything extra is a bonus even though it won't need it. Think of it like a ferrari pootling about town, it's got more than enough power to do anything you'd ever ask, so it has an easy time of it :)

Would one of these be able to drive a set of Monitor Audio BR2s, which are 6Ohm/90dB? What about a set of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s 6Ohm/86dB?

I'm looking at setting up a music system in the study with the PC (Foobar2000 -> Caiman) as a source. :)

Impedance - the load the speaker presents to the amp is more important than sensitivity IMHO, so I think you need to find out how reactive a load your two pairs of speakers present to see how easily they wouyld be driven.

jandl100
29-12-2011, 14:12
Yes, Ali is right, ime.

I've happily driven my 83dB/W MBL speakers with a TA2020 Mini-T T amp with medium scale music in my 20x12 foot room, but the speakers are an easy load with a smooth impedance curve.

I've heard the Mini-T sounding very ordinary with other, higher sensitivity speakers which may have had a more reactive load component.

It sounded great with Tannoys at the 2011 Scalford Show.

Aye, probably why they sound good driving full range single driver type speakers.

Do any of these amps come with more than 1 input.

Do you mean test for the speaker impedance? You'll need test kit, quite a bit of it as well I'm sorry to say.

As a minimum you'd need two true RMS multimeters, a function generator, one precision 0.1 ohm resistor, a power amplifier of known output impedance. An oscilloscope with voltage & current probes would be handy as well :D

But that only tells the impedance when driven with sine waves, it doesn't tell the story when it's being driven with musical signals which are much more complex

Or people could just listern to the stereo at normal levels without thinking it's some PA system.

I like the idea of a tiny amp but ive not seen any high quality finish enclosures id be happy with with exception to the SHUE 2024

:rfl: Andr'e, the impedance doesn't really alter with an increase in volume level. If it's difficult to drive due to possibly having a complicated crossover then it'll stay that way at 1W or 100W.

Alis' earlier statement about using them with a single efficient full way driver would be by far the simplest load & I should imagine they'd sound at there best with this type of speaker :)

You can bypass a lot of technical bull shyte just listerning a normal levels tho :eyebrows: I have some real disasterous mis-matches regarding the simular to what your pointing out with no probs..
