Hello,

My appologies if this has been covered previously: I'm wondering how memebers clean (what cleaning "cocktails"), store/protect, and organize their record collections (remember Nick Hornby's "autobiographical" system?).

Best,
Barry :cocktail:

I just use a 1 + 4 mix of isopropanol and distilled water (eg. 200ml IPA to 800ml water) plus 'just enough' wetting agent (Kodak photoflo) for cleaning. I use Discwasher VRP inner sleeves. I don't use outer pvc sleeves.

LPs are arranged alphabetically without regard to genre (for classical I use the composer's surname - everything else is artist's surname or the group's name) with plastic divider cards every three letters ("ABC", "DEF" etc).

CDs are just dumped in boxes as I don't play them any more (all are now ripped to hard disk)

Indeed I do. I love 'High Fidelity' but spend most of the time cringing whilst reading it as too much of it is like looking into a mirror :o

what do people use to store the records in? I know its common to use ikea type shelving but i dont want everything on display just kept away safe but at hand.

the sensible part of me says get shelving but the child part of me says get a treasure chest to put them in lol

I'm a lazy, lazy man so my records are stored in no particular order. Of course if I want to find a specific album it could mjean 15 minutes of searching (and then not finding it anyway ) I did once put them into alphabetical/ artist but couldn't be arsed to put them back in the right order once I played them so that lasted about a month...

CDs the same, some are on bookshelves some are piled up on the floor. The crappy jewel cases break apart in your hands, I have so many broken ones it is now becoming a real issue...

I'm sure the File Audio gang are laughing their asses off...

RCM fluid - got a big drum mail order from Mains Cables R Us, too much hassle to make my own plus it is impossible to buy isopropyl alchohol anywhere round here (and I have tried everywhere and everyone).

Anyway its rock and roll man, I bet Jimi Hendrix never catalogued his records:lol:

For cleaning I'm still using the Clearaudio fluid that came with my Smart Matrix RCM.

For organisation I use i-cubes (http://www.i-cubes.co.uk/) with records arranged roughly into genres (pop/rock, jazz, world, classical) and then alphabetised within those, with "Classical" being subdivided into periods (early, baroque, classical, romantic, modern, contemporary). That's the plan - in practice records never get put back in the right place, so every year sees a re-ordering.

CDs are all ripped and tagged - therefore self-indexing! They're stored in Really Useful Boxes (http://www.ryman.co.uk/0161202832/Really-Useful-Box-9-Litre/Product) in the garage .. .. ..
