Where's good to eat in Guildford?

Guys,

I'm looking for some recommendations... On Saturday, I'm going down to Surrey to see Speedy Steve and get my new ebony armboard for my Techy. I've decided to take Del with me, as she finishes work tomorrow for Christmas, so we're going to pop into Guildford for lunch and to do some shopping, while Steve finishes off and fits the armboard.

So where's good to eat in Guildford? We'd like to go to a cosy and quaint little olde worlde pub, preferably heaving with history, that serves real ales and classic home-made British pub grub, not bloody curries, chillies, Mexican, Chinese or Italian food, like so many pubs do these days... :rolleyes:

When we want those types of food, we prefer to go to restaurants specialising in them.

So, think top-notch warming wintry food, such as home-made soups with thick rustic bread, game pies, casseroles/stews, ham hocks, Barnsley chops, roasts, local sausages with creamy mashed potatoes and onion gravy - that type of thing, all washed down with the finest local real ales, and preferably where we can sit beside a nice roaring log fire.

Is there anywhere like that in Guildford? Any links to relevant websites would be appreciated :cool:

All the good pubs in Guildford went years ago (IMO) Those were the days of (mostly) liquid lunches and good pub grub followed by a few fags:lol:

Most of them are now Enterititus Pubs (Gastro). Doesn't Steve know of any?

If you venture outside Guildford you might find what you are looking for.

Ye Old Ship Inn in Artington might fit the bill or The Seahorse, Shalford.

Yea, I have eaten there (Ham, Egg and Chips - real gourmet stuff) More of a beer than food pub IMO (bit tired looking)

Ye Old Ship Inn in Artington might fit the bill or The Seahorse, Shalford.

The Seahorse looks like it's part of the same chain as The Horse & Groom, as the menu is identical. Both offer the sort of food and ambience we like. Do you know which is nearest Bisley, where Steve lives, the Horse & Groom in Merrow or The Seahorse in Shalford? :cool:

I haven't been to the H&G for about 30 years! I know it has been completely refurbished recently as it is on one of my lunchtime cycle routes.

Neither the H&G nor The SH are near Bisley. Bisley is a few miles outside G/ford. You could try The Royal Oak, Pirbright (about 3 miles)

Lol... When I say "near", I mean within, say, a 15-20 mile radius. As we're already driving 207 miles from Wrexham, a few more miles here or there will make bugger all difference! ;)

However, The Royal Oak in Pirbright looks ideal and is local to Steve... How far roughly, in terms of driving time, is it from Guildford town centre? :)

Lol... Steve needs me to bring the Techy down to take some final measurements, so he can finish off the armboard, which he needs the T/T in front of him to do properly, and then he's fitting the armboard for me, when it's been made, which is quite a fiddly task on the 1210, as the nuts securing the bolts in place have to be inserted blindly from underneath, and so you can't see what you're doing.

So, we're going down to his place in the morning, leaving him with the T/T, to do the job, then f*cking off into town to do some shopping and have some lunch, and then collecting the T/T later when the armboard has been made and fitted :cool:

Unfortunately for me, dude, Steve lives in Surrey, not Wrexham! ;)
