With the two lightweight rechargeable batteries the unit can be used for up to 8 hours and with the included AC adaptor/charger it becomes a very capable and compact desktop amplifier to boot.

The amplifier can be optimised to almost any headphone you choose using the on board gain switch and connection to your source and headphones is made with the 3.5mm jacks to keep the weight and form factor to an absolute minimum.

The next batch should be shipping in the 2nd or 3rd week of May. As ever, I've been held up about a week in the component sourcing stage but that should be sorted by the end of today.

They reckon it is a great bit of kit and give special mention to the very nice top end, vocals and bass. Well worth a read!

The latest batch sold out before shipping again, but an even bigger batch is now being built so that hopefully we can hold some of these popular amps in stock. That batch should start shipping in about 3 or 4 weeks, depending on when the custom panels arrive.

A quick note about shipping too - international prices are set to drop a fair amount once negotiations with our new courier are complete on Wednesday. Domestic orders will still be shipped via the Royal Mail, who offer the best value insured & tracked services for us at the moment.

When can we expect to see the EHP-03 with:

- no cheap looking grey surrounds on the sockets

- switchable bass boost up to 6dB in 1dB steps

- switchable bass boost starting frequency of 50Hz or 100Hz

- switchable crossfeed in two or three steps

Such an amp would be a world beater as there is very little out there of any merit with all these essential features at a realistic price.

Because not all CDs are created equal.

If there had been a standard from day one for sound balance on CDs then we would not need a tone control. Unfortunately bass quantity varies wildly on CDs, for reasons known only to the numpties who produce them - perhaps they assume that we all have tone controls.

Similarly there are many CDs and records produced in the early days of stereo with extreme stereo effects that are tiring and irritating to listen to on headphones. Crossfeed reduces these effects to something which is listenable.

The only readily available headphone amp which thus far attempts to address all these issues is the Meier Corda Classic. Unfortunately it costs 600 Euros. When I look at what is in an Audiolab M-DAC for £600 and what is in the Meier for £500, I have to conclude that the latter represents poor value.

Hence the need for an EHP-03 as I have described and at reasonable cost. There is a yawning gap in the market here for an amp that has these features at this price or a little above and sounds good too.

Then again, some people have headphones without bass - like the AKG K701 :D

Hardly.

Jan Meier uses about three components to do crossfeed, six if you want two settings.

Bass boost is a handful of caps and resistors.

Two switches and a knob.

Job done.

It's so simple that it makes me wonder why so few have grasped it. Perhaps they think it isn't needed. Perhaps they don't know who their customers are and what they want - I suspect this is the true answer.

The few manufacturers who are adding these facilities are the ones who read forums. They know what their customers want. Jan Meier has been very successful with his amps despite their high prices. I may yet spring for a Corda Classic if someone else doesn't fill this void soon.

I'm afraid there are no such plans for those in the near future. They are interesting features that have crossed my mind before, particularly during the development of the EHP-1. At the moment there are some other projects which I am focussing on, so any new headphone amp with additional features will not be looked into until these other things have come to fruition. ('These other things' being the fully desktop version of the EHP-O2 and an expanded range of cables).
