Speaker help

Hi,
Im looking for some advice re speakers.

A recent mishap with my vintage Arcam Alpha II amp has blown one of my vintage Wharfedale Linton XP2 speakers. Many great years of service has been had from them so they owe me nothing..... perhaps a local museum may have use for them ??

Cash is somewhat limited in these times so Ive bought a Marantz PM6003 amp (why is it soooo much bigger & heavier than the Arcam ?? - I thought electronic stuff was continually getting smaller :confused:) and now wondering what to do about the speaker (sadly singular).

Tha Arcam/Wharfedale combo gave a nice warmth to the sound and I would like to try to replicate it- I tend to listen to ethereal/shoegaze stuff, a bit of indie but never heavy rock, rap or classical.

So should I try to repair the speaker or replace them with a new set. If I should replace what would you recommend ? - limited budget maybe around the £160 mark. Im not fussed if its not the latest model and may even consider 2nd hand. Are Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 a suitable replacement or am I jus being loyal to a brand I know ?

As Ive been happy with my system, Ive never really kept up to date with the hifi world so any advice greatly appreciated

Im toying with going for them - £99 at superfi with a 10% discount and free postage, but is this just brand loyalty ? are they as balanced as the Lintons Im used to ?

Sorry but Im very much at the budget end of things - last couple of years have been tough

I'm currently using a pair of Mission 760i bookshelf speakers, until something else comes up.

Iv'e seen then on ebay really cheap, say £40.oo.

There good for the money, Iv'e had Proac, Quad and Zu, don't expect them to be that good, but on a budget you can't go wrong.

My first ever "proper" speakers were the original Super Lintons, and at the time thought they were great, but I believe the newer incarnation is actually better, so if you are still wanting to stick to the brand, you won't go far wrong.

A old Pair of Heybrook 'HB2' on auction, need some TLC but they are nice little speakers if you like that vintage'ish look.

The Diamond 9.1 is a sensational speaker at a give away price. I've had many pairs of them, you'd have to spend a hell of a lot more to better them, which is probably why they won awards 4 years in a row. Trust me, they're fantastic sounding in all aspects :thumbsup:

I thought they sounded better than the 10.1 that replaced them!

Just to give things a little twist there is a pair of Wharfedale E30 in ebay for pick up not too far from me - any comments regrding these ?

I wouldn't bother Paul, if the drivers haven't been re-foamed then they must be on their last legs. I wouldn't exactly call them hifi speakers either ;)

As Dave mentioned on the other thread, they were about making a lot of noise & in some ways are quite similar to certain Jamo models that a certain type of old boy buys, though maybe a bit more refined :eyebrows:
