View Full Version : Transparent Speaker
Swedish design firm People People has prototyped a transparent speaker called "Speaker," which uses WiFi or a headphone jack to receive its signal.
Being big is good for sound quality, but not so good for shipping. Any other speaker will ship a lot of air around the globe before ending up in your living room. This speaker ships in a small, flat package that goes in through your mailbox. The glass sheets making up the box is being ordered through the glass repair shop closest to every single customer. In that way the speaker reduces shipping with up to 90%, and supports local handicraft in one go. A very economical and ecological solution.
The speaker is then assembled at home, IKEA style. This also means that the components that breaks first (the rubber ring and the speaker cone) can be easily replaced, keeping the product away from any landfill.

They use Triangle sourced drive units so are quite good. Must admit I was sceptical until I heard a pair.

yes, quite a bit prettier than those swedish 'designer' jobs

Easy, open baffle with Perspex baffle-

And Perspex is better than glass for enclosures, glass rings like a bell.

I think your assertion is a little one sided don't you?

If you like transparent speakers, you should check out Ferguson Hill speakers (take a look at the 001's, only £13k of clear acrylic). I did try to put a picture in, but my computer skills weren'y up to it.
Fortunately they do some nice smaller speakers that are considerably cheaper.
I heard a pair of the 001's at a show, they did sound very very good, but didn't do loud very well.

They're gorgeous!
But apparently don't sound that good.
Acrylic (or Perspex, plexiglas etc) isn't that great for a speaker cabinet either.

No... A clever way to sell idiots a pair of speaker cones for a no doubt heavily inflated price ...

I always liked the look of the Celestion AVF302(?) - no idea how they sound, but they would look great with my lilac curtains! :eyebrows:

Hmmm, that's cheating Alex :eyebrows: The enclosure looks to be aluminium, ok so the stand is some kind of transparent stuff ;)
Glass speakers  I just hope they are safety glass so when they get dinged they break into rounded bits of glass & not sharp stuff :)
Oh, and the Harmon Kardon GLA55 (see what they did there?) for the desktop:

And if you like your speakers glass and looking like a tumble drier - complete with coloured LED "effects" there are always the Kenwood SP0001 - though not sure they ever made it into production:
