I saw these speakers yesterday in a shop, thee guy selling them said they were Tannoys from the early 70's, I dont know much about Tannoys and wondered if these were collectable and how much they would sell for.
There were no logos on them and on the back of the speaker there were no connection poles just wires coming out of the back
Here is a pic of them

Any help much appreciated
Thanks
Lee
looks like 12'' or 15'' dual concentrics in home made cabs - value will depend on the type of DC drivers and their condition, even if they are shagged theyare still saleable as they can be reconditioned. If he's only asking peanuts I'd snap them up if I were you.

So what would be a good price when you say peanuts

Aton - if he wants more then have a dig inside the cab and see which DC they use (silver, gold and red are worth more than the HPD) and what condition they are in. A pair of minters are worth £500 plus no matter which type they are, reds and golds go for over a grand...

If they are Dual concentrics, I would probably pay £250 regardless of model or condition.
I missed a free pair a couple of years ago, just a bit too late.

.
Fair comment you still would not lose money on them even at that price.
Cabs are pretty worthless though.

He was asking £120 for them, I might go back and have a closer look at them

Check out some pics of Tannoy DC drivers on the net first so you know what you are looking at/for. Could be bargain of the century:)
A huge shame there's no talk at all about the current models, which are rather better if the Turnberry is anything to go by. The prices of shagged old wrecks is now so high, especially after reconditioning, that the occasional used *or new* Tannoy is looking to be a more interesting prospect in all honesty, as the crossovers are bang up to date, the drivers are new and better than ever and the boxes solid, if plain inside...
If the drivers are in pretty good order - and should be if the surrounds are the corrugated type - then even without the boxes, they'd fetch good money.

True but the new ones are crazy money (although they would certainly be on my shorlist come a lottery win;), its a lot, lot cheaper to buy the older drivers and box them up yourself. c.f Dave Daveskis DIY Westminster thread...
I don't know why Tannoy choose to price these so high, but maybe it's the far eastern market they chase. turnberry's used here (the handful of pairs they've sold in the UK) were going for around £1200, and that's not unreasonably more if you cannot make your own carcasses to put refurbed drivers in...
Turnberry's are £3K plus, Dave, or were you talking second-hand? Anyway they only have the piddling little 10 inch DC :eyebrows:
I was talking used, and in this model, it ain't piddling since it doesn't scream in the way LGM's do :) Wonderful smooth balance and sounds wonderful at low levels too.
'piddling' was meant tongue in cheek mate ;)

The HPD range are really bargains for Tannoys, one has to watch out for the rotting foam surrounds, not too difficult or expensive to replace.
I am back into Tannoy DC's after a 30+year break! HPD3 15's, sounding very nice, I did not realise that my ears were still that good!

If the current production Tannoys that I've heard are anything to go by, I'd rather stick to the old stuff.
Looking at the likely age of those speakers in the opening post, there's a good possibility of finding (at the very least) HPDs inside, if not Monitor Golds. There is a sort of shiny reflection off the cone surround that looks very like the doped paper edge of a Monitor Gold (or Red, for that matter).

I am beginning to think that the HPD 315's that I now have are better sounding than Silvers and Golds that I owned previously.

I would tend to agree with you there. I prefer the HPD's. Just because something is old and rare, "vintage" doesn't make it better, sonically.
Hang on, I'm "Old".

But hang on, the HPD's date from the mid 70's lol, well, I suppose that's new to me!
My later 12" Silvers were far better than the earlier Silvers that I also had.
The Blacks are the rarest and command stupid money but according to Roger at Lockwood they sound the worst, i've not heard them myself

Taking into acount whats sat ontop i'd say they were more 10" units. That grill material looks more 60's than 70's They look a bit like Tannoy 'Cornetta'!
