Just looking at 'Angelo888' new Rack brought me to a problem i have in which i just cannot get anyone to supply me European Oak planed upto to spec! Does anyone know a reliable supply or even better a small cabinet maker that can actually use a tape measure & as a bonus can tell the difference between European Oak & American White Oak :lolsign:

I'm wanting to make a 1960's hifi unit to my own design in solids.

Do you mean that you want to buy (for instance) stock that's been planed to 3" x 1" rather than 3" x 1" stock that's been planed?

Yes for example i would want a piece of timber taken from Ex 3''x1'' to be finished to my spec generally 2 3/4'' x 3/4'' planed all four sides. This is generally done with a Planer/thicknesser

You're welcome mate.
I don't go there very often, but when I do, I can spend hours there, poking around picking up bit & pieces - it's the only place I know where you can see people walking around pushing a shopping trolley full of sawn timber!
Last time I was there, it was on business rather than pleasure, but I got a tour of the mill & machinery, then got a chance to wander around the rows of stacked & sticked and roundwood.

I have the same problem, sort of. Trying to get pieces of Mountain Ash (Rowan) 10" x 4" x 1/2", planed, polished and laquered. 4 off to start with.
Tried to download said catalogue and it locks up my laptop (100% CPU usage) (

Do you already have the Rowan wood Richard?
If not & you need to buy some, then beware that there is a species of Eucalyptus which is also known as Mountain Ash, you should check by confirming the Latin name. Rowan is Sorbus aucuparia and the euc is Eucalyptus regnans and it does sometimes turn up in craft wood suppliers stock.

Andre, if you're stuck drop me a pm, I can machine what you need. I have Euro Oak from wl west and Goldbergs, prime always, and decent machines..

Cor, thanks for that. Didn't know about the Eucalyptus variant.
No, I don't have the wood yet.

You may also have trouble finding a piece of Rowan of those dimensions. It's not commonly sawn as timber and a piece 4" wide would come from a tree that would be a pretty large diameter for a Rowan.

I am beginning to think you are right about the dimensions. Might have to settle for Ash.
But the Rowan would be special....for a pair of special amps. Cost is not important.
I could go for MDF painted black to match the transformers but that's really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Richard, you should call Robert Smith at Timberline, he is good for unusual timbers, or see here:
