I've just picked up a linn Asaka in need of a retip at the right money from a very nice man on PFM.

I live in West Lancs...... where oh where shall I take it for a rebuild? :scratch::ner::lolsign:

Looks like Dom is shortly to hear the roar of my Cerbera down his street....

Can Dom do diamond transplants, or does he have to replace the whole cantilever assembly from the telescopic bit forwards?

Sorry Paul, my question was ironic - I'll take it to Dom because he's a forum member and because I prefer to spend my money in the local economy where I can.

Hi Tring Thing, I havent spoken to Dom yet but according to his thread on PFM he can just retip if required. I'll let him have a look-see and go from there I figure. No rush.

Dom can do diamond transplants, it doesn't have to be the cantilever too.

Personally, I wouldn't change the cantilever unless it needs it.

The other obvious choice is Expert Stylus, but they are more expensive than Dom, very much slower and don't have the same selection of styli that Dom potentially has (but then they do have their own proprietary profile that nobody else has - the Paratrace).

Hi Darren,

I think your Asaka is potentially a very good buy. The suspension on all that age of Linn cartridges is very long lasting (my own Troika tracks as well as it ever has and sits no nearer to the record than when it was new). Personally, I would have it fitted with the best stylus you can afford. Having said that, it will make the cartridge much more sensitive to correct adjustment/alignment than it ever was when it was new.

Very many thanks again Mark. I was thinking one of those Fritz Thingy stylus efforts that Dom has. The combined cost will certainly be lower than a new MC of similar quality.
By the way.... The spindle of my Punk Triangle is very non magnetic - which made me swear!

Hi Darren. Just spotted this thread, sorry :eyebrows::eyebrows:
I can certainly replace the tip only, assuming the cantilever is suitable.
I would recommend the FGII tip, or you could have a FG S but as stated, these are very sensitive to vta.
I always try and keep the original cantilever where possible, unless a customer requires an upgrade. I can fashion new cantilevers in nickel silver, or fit solid boron and ruby. Solid boron cantilevers are usually pre fitted with micro ridge tips and ruby cantilevers I order in with either FGII or FG S tips pre fitted.

I can also move tips from one cart to another, which may be useful for some and may save a bit of money. Dependant on cartridges of course.:)

Dom, can you explain something for me please, it's been nagging me for ages. Why is that may of the pictures of your retips show a huge amount of glue wicked right up the diamond from the canti, when all the comparable images we see from ESco, VDH etc, and my own experiences of retips from Esco show them not to be similarly loaded up with glue on the stylus, surely the increase in mass has an effect on the stylus resonance? Is it a result of the glue you use or the way it is applied?
