Thanks to Sky who have succeeded in bolloxing up our internet connection order when we move to our new house tomorrow, I will have to be offline for up to two weeks.

By chance I happened to look on Sky's website to see if they had sent the router to our new address, I saw that the telephone and sky install was fine but the broadband order had not been completed and to ring customer services. The dipstick in customer services could only say "The order has failed" which really is helpful. After 20 minutes of this futile tail chasing game we asked to speak to a manager. It transpires that some shit-for-brains who entered the order onto the computer had put our current address for the install and not at our new address - no wonder BT returned the order.

So, back to square one now and we will have to wait for a modem to be posted out and then wait for the broadband to be connected, which could take up to two weeks :steam:

Dontcha luvvem

:steam: indeed.

Why is it that 'communication' companies seem to have the most problem, erm, communicating?

Hope the the house move goes smoothly and that you're back on-line soon Frank.

:goodluck:

Does your local library offer internet access??? Ours does, but I don't know how much they charge.

Sky have apparently sent us dongles to access the internet until they sort the mess out. I may be a dinosaur when it comes to computing, but I thought you had to be pretty close to a wifi station to pick a signal up. The place we are moving to is a bit out in the boondocks away from any sizeable town.

Please don't be too hard on the poor peeps answering the phone in the call center, they get a lot of shit from irate customers and it's not their fault in the first place. My other half works for Sky and has to deal with angry customers every day. She has a Masters in geology and is a member of the Royal Society, so you can't really say she's a dipstick.

I appreciate it's difficult not to get angry at the person on the other end of the phone, I've done it myself, but they are usually trying their best to help, and your problem is not their fault!

Not angry at all Ali, just frustrated. The satellite dish install and the phone connection details were both entered correctly on the computer, yet the broadband address details weren't. What caused the frustration was only discovering the non-ordering on the sky order tracking page and not knowing why the broadband order "failed" and why we were not informed so we could do something about it, that is until we spoke to a senior manager. She was as good as gold in finding out where the system went wrong, apologised profusely that we were not contacted about the problem so it could be sorted much sooner and has waived the installation charges.

I am going to be very busy in the coming weeks so I probably won't be that fussed about a delay in internet connection. As for the ebay goodies I'm watching, I may pop over to the local library and see if I can put a crafty snipe bid on :eyebrows:

Finally back online now and not before time.

Sky sent me a T Mobile dongle to tide me over but I couldn't get even the slightest sniff of signal where I live, so I had to wait another week for broadband :(

My major concern is the internet keeps dropping out and it is always at a crucial time too - like the closing minutes of an ebay auction or transferring money on a secured site.

Welcome back Frank.
Your ISP is now doing continual checks to ascertain the quickest and most stable speed your broadband can support.
Unfortunately dropoffs will be common for the learning period, which is a couple of weeks or so.

Unfortunately dropoffs will be common for the learning period, which is a couple of weeks or so.

I still have endless line dropping problems and it is made worse now having to walk backwards and forwards resetting the modem when I am supposed to be resting. Sometimes it has gone off before I even get back to the computer, so it means another round trip. If they were monitoring my line, they should be calling to tell ME I have a dropout problem.

I have come to the conclusion that it is a total waste of time calling Sky. The operators don't have the authority tp do anything beyond a preset script and the "managers" don't seem to exist when you call again to ask why nothing has happened that they have promised to do and I have been lied to enough times already. I am at the end of my tether with them to be honest.

Yep, IMO call centres are actually firewalls to keep the customer away from the business. :steam:

How many phone extensions have you got in your new place?
Is the router plugged into one of them?

Effem
17-01-2012, 14:07
There is the main BT inlet and 2 extension sockets. Only the main one is being used for the phone and modem, with a filter separating them, the other two extension sockets are unused

Stratmangler

OK - hopefully your BT socket has a split face, in which case unscrew and remove the lower part of the faceplate.
Your extension cabling should be attached to the removable section.
Inside the socket is the test point - plug your filter into there and see how you get on.
