Went to buy some LP's last week and was asked if I would be interested in buying some vintage HiFi equipment as well.

I ended up purchasing the Sansui QRX 9001 some Mission R737 speakers, a set of Yamaha NS18 speakers a Nr mint Sansui SR 737 direct drive deck, two tape decks one National Panasonic and one Akai. One Aiwa IC-FET 8 track stereo receiver.

I'm a bit bewildered to be honest as I haven't that much expertise in terms of what is out there in vintage HiFi.

I have already connected the Mission speakers to my system replacing some old Kenwood LS34's and the difference is superb.

That sounds like a good day's work! Very jealous of you for the Sansui quad receiver - nice big beast of a thing.

It certainly is a beast. I think I popped a couple of discs heaving it around.

A lovely retro looking Yamaha NS18 speaker, one of a pair.

Oh wow, you have the Yamahas with the ear shaped big drive unit :) The tweeter is in one corner of the bass unit if I remember correctly

Getting rarer by the day, nice find ;)

that Sansui is from the age when they built them to last a lifetime, the caps may need replacing though, excellent piece of kit, you did well ;)

Yes thanks Mark...excuse my lack of knowledge but you say the caps will need replacing, what and how please?

I think Mark is refering to the main power supply reservoir capacitors ;) These will be electrolytic capacitors & they age, the hotter things get the faster they age. They'll lose capacitance which will result in poorer performance than standard.

In fact something that age could do with all the electrolytics replacing, not just the main supply caps.

If it's had an easy life & not been used much they may well all be ok, it's not very likely though ;)

Thanks for that Mark. Is this an expensive thing to do?

where are you in the south as i might be able to help ;)

If you can solder then probably not as most of the electrolytic capacitors will be cheap. The PSU (power supply) caps will be the most expensive, but things have changed in 30+ years & you should be able to source what is likely to be in there at a very decent price.

Might be worth increasing the capacitance value of the PSU caps... I'm sure that you could fit modern caps with 4 times the capacitance in the same space occupied by what is likely to be in there, higher ripple current to :eyebrows:

Technology moves on...

Hope you have a good weekend
