Ebayer delays payment

An ebay auction of mine ended today. Heard nothing from the winner up until a few minutes ago I got the following:

"Hi , my dad has won your cd player , but he & my mum are on holiday at the moment , & will be home 2 weeks today , think that's the 30th , I can't pay for it as I don't have that amount if money I'm 16 , so would you please be kind enough to hang on to to for him , as he desperately wants it & will pay as soon as he's home . Hope you understand , all good wishes from M****l C*****k ."

I've blanked out the name for obvious reasons. Do you think:


He's trying to fob me off till payday.
He's used his dad's account without him knowing.
There is something else afoot?


I've told him, holiday or not, your da can get on the internet and complete payment. Obviously in a more officious manner than that, but I got my point across. Told him I would put the CD player back on auction should payment not be received within two days.

Hmmm, I think you can stipulate your own conditions about payment as long as these are in the auction or BIN listing for all to see. As far as I know Ebay have a policy that things must be payed for within seven days? :scratch: Seems fair enough to me...

Looks like matey might be getting a strike for non payment according to ebay rules.

Besides which I thought you needed to be 18 to bid on ebay? Could be wrong here though :eyebrows:

I would put it back up on the basis that the bidder could not or would not complete the deal, and name the bidder. It is NOT your problem in the first place, and this kid is either genuinely naive or pulling your chain.
The rules are there and understood from the outset.

That is how I felt at the beginning, then I let my wife read the email and she got all soft. "Ahhhh poor young fella obviously wanted it for himself". So I thought I'd try and be a little yielding by waiting two days, but I am most definitely not waiting two weeks. That virtual money is burning a hole in my pocket. :lol:

I think you have to give the period stipulated in your advert - if it's the Ebay default & that's 7 days, then 7 days it should be.
If he'd not sent you this email - the buyer still be within his rights not paying for that period. I reckon your hands are tied because if you readvertise it, then you're breaking your contract with the buyer.

Yes, it works both ways! While the buyer has an obligation to pay within a set amount of time, the seller also has an obligation to make sure that the item reaches the buyer :)

It's a two way contract & legally binding, oddly not a lot of people seem to appreciate this :scratch: Buyers & seller alike :mental:

Well after a good nights sleep, I've decided to give the person the benefit of the doubt.

I contacted an ebay staff member and ran over the particulars with them, and they say I can file a Unpaid Item case whenever I like, and that I can relist the item four days later.

I emailed the buyer telling them that I would wait the 2 week period and that should payment not be made by the 1st of December I would file an Unpaid Item case and then relist the CD player.

I'm only annoyed because I wanted to buy a preamp off of Jonboy, and now I've got to wait. :steam:

Very Generous. You have to give him 7 days anyway and then hassle of relisting. What if his dad refuses to stump up when he returns ? One solution would be to ask for the parents mobile number then ring them up on holiday to check. It's possible they don't know he's bought it and may save a lot of hassle.

They've done things a bit arse-ways, but for an easy life I'll hang on and let the plot unravel. 2 weeks won't kill me.

TBH, as long as the buyer has got solid feedback, I'd be tempted to wait.

You'd have to wait 7 days anyway under ebay terms and in my, while you do get the odd dick, most people are reasonable.

Had a similar situation myself and when I waited and the sale was concluded, the buyer was very positive in his feedback.

I think you've done the right thing on this occasion, as you said, you're only annoyed because you've been denied the chance to buy something else. Trust you're instincts - you can always tell when something is amiss. I've been soft on sellers recently who have screwed up but have 100% feedback otherwise. One guy sold me speakers that didn't work and then tried to blag it (he hadn't checked them before listing), and in another auction I bought an LP whose condition had been woefully misrepresented. He offered to refund but refused to pay return postage. I decided not neg either of them.

Glad you got a good result. I know there are a percentage of wasters on eBay, but the majority I have found to be good people - if you treat them fairly and respectfully, you often get that returned IME.

Echoed here. But the tiny minority, buyers and sellers alike that DON'T play fair really give you a headache. BTW Nathan, a buyer has 4 days to make payment before action can be taken for non payment. Sometimes it does pay to be a bit more patient, regardless of what the listing terms were, as a buyer forced into paying by dispute could possibly leave negative feedback ;)
