Feeling analogue today

Hi Guys

My name is Frank, and I live in Denmark, and recently I got a hold of a Nagra E recorder.
I´m starting up a video project with a violinist, and would like to record the sound on this beautiful machine.
So if you got any pointers, or suggestions, feel free.

I mostly work as an editor and photographer, sound is not my speciality, so if you know of a good affordable microphone I should get, please let me know.

When it comes to music, I´m all over the place, from Big Bill Broonzy and Blind Willie McTell to P.J. Harvey and Feist. These days I listen a lot to Timber Timbre and Caro Emerald.

Hi Frank, welcome to AoS :) I'd love to be able to help you with the microphone etc, but I have only ever recorded direct from other stereo equipment, so I'm as useless as a chocolate teapot in that respect :rolleyes:

I'm sure there are others on here though that certainly will be able to give you some decent advice, so stick about & see what happens ;)

Thanks for the welcome,:) sorry for the late replie.- I haven´t done many "serious" audio recordings, a lot of interviews and stuff like that. - But what is your take on this think? Is it even a good idea to record a single instrument on a mono recorder? (this is the part where my language limitations comes in not so handy) but will the sound miss something? Some room or frequency or something third?

Hello,

one microphone on one instrument onto one channel of recording sounds a good starting point.

I also have a Nagra E somewhere and looking at the Nagra fact sheet the E has a frequency range of 50Hz to 15KHz +/- 2dB. A violin usually has a range of 196Hz (G3) to around 10KHz - so there is no reason that a well set up recording using good tape shouldn't be able to capture the essence of the instrument.

I cannot give you a personal recommendation as to a microphone, I have not used any for recording solo violin, but I shall ask one of the recording engineers I know for some advice. I did manage to find some initial reading and pointers though by searching Google for "Dynamic violin microphone"

Thanks for the info, it is very usefull to know that the Nagra will be able to handle the full frequency of the violin. - I have ordered a EMC-170 microphone, it looks like that should do the trick, but of course only a test will tell. You are more than welcome to ask the recording ingeener you know, what he thinks of this mic.
