Power output would seem a little excessive given that most who use valves have moderately to highly sensitive speakers I would have thought?

A little on Bob Carver ,who built switching power supply amps during the 1980's then later started Sunfire.

He is pretty well known as a Rock&Roll amp builder in the U.S.
his amps where a very good value, he also made a pretty sweet tape deck.

He also made a much bigger version of those amps in the links :eyebrows: If I remember right the biggy was capable of over 1KW RMS per channel :eek:

The amps Jeff is refering to used am SMPS to supply an amplifier at just over whatever voltage it needed along with all the current, they were incredibly efficient & sounded as good as anything else about at the time. They just used a ton less electricity & virtually no heatsinking :lolsign:

They where all the rage in the 80's and 90's but when they failed it was like watching fireworks!

I liked the PM-600 I used this amp at work for 15 years with no problems for assembly's,parades,and theator shows and often drove it to the edge of clipping for hours on end with no ill effects.

The one I used to power a large room for school performances was 200 watts per channel RMS into an 8 ohm load and it ran fairly cool.

Oh I can imagine ;) I have todays equivalent of the Lightstar here, same kind of idea, but over 2000W RMS per channel into an 8 ohm speaker :eek:

A heck of a lot more reliable though as this beast has a 5 year warranty & is used professionally at big concerts & suchlike, I guess it's used to being driven hard :eyebrows:

It never got super hot,even when driving it well into the yellow clipping lights at peek for extended shows,but I never drove it to the red lights as one teacher did and fried both the horns and drivers before they turned it off.
They thought a fuse had blown and came to ask me what to do, after smelling the burned voice coils I told them to go shopping for new P.A. speakers.
My sarcasm was not well received but I had not only warned them but taped a line on the master volume control that said do not exceed past this point!
And they did.
Bob Carver builds very good stuff but nothing is truly idiot proof.

:lolsign: Some people will never learn! I locked down some gain controls on a mixer at one session in a big nightclub that I'd set up. The gain sliders couldn't be moved any higher, yet someone managed to unlock them & killed two pairs of very expensive 18" bass drivers :mental:
