Denon Body Mod

Does anyone know someone in the Lonodon region who has experience and feels confident around changing the body to the Denon 103r.
I rather not post it as cannot find the orginal packaging

Also remember, mate, that the body-shell of the 103R is less resonant than that of the stock 103, due to being internally damped with pads. Therefore, it doesn't impinge as negatively on sound quality.

What I'm getting at is that there is less to be gained, sonically, by removing or upgrading the body-shell of the 103R than there is with the stock 103.

That's not to say, though, that the exotic wood bodies Dominic sells wouldn't provide a notable sonic improvement, or maybe you just want it to look sexier? If that's the case then feel free to ignore my waffling! ;)

Just trying to save you from spending money, unless it is really necessary :cool:

Hi Marco. The 103r just has a single damping pad between the body and the front yolk. It does help with body resonance as you say.

When using a Decca super gold the sound seems quite vague in comparison I am used to more resolution and read the upgrades make a difference such as body and needle

Hi John,

No doubt fitting a 'posher' stylus will help with the vagueness you mention (although watch that the sound, in the process, doesn't become too 'hi-fi'), as indeed will upgrading the body-shell.

Undoubtedly, in my experience, the plastic body-shells of the 103, and 103R, regardless of internal damping, muddy the sound to varying degrees, as a result of the way that their resonant nature impacts adversely on the music signal.

However, you can 'fancify' the 103 as much as you want, but it will never be a Decca! It all depends on where you want to go :)

I no I cannot get it to Decca levels but I remember hearing one on Vics that was mod and thought it was a really nice cart

Do you think the mods make the cart to clinical I was hoping to tighten things up with the mods

John, I just fitted today the MIDAS body that Daiwok over on Lenco Heaven sells and so far the difference is well worth it on my regular DL103.

It's not that hard to do the cutting as long as you have the original cart protector,a sharp knife and take your time.

The video that Thomas Schick posted is really worth a good few watches as well before you start.

No I think from what he's posted all the gold ones are gone, now he has the older square edge silver ones I think for €90 and the new rounder edge version which is what I have for €120 but best to check on the traders section on Lenco Heaven
