Yep - I've been looking at that auction for a while - if it had been nearer me I'd have snapped it up a while back!!
But collection only from Uxbridge .... a 4 or 5 hour round trip :(

If the seller drops the price to £250 I might be getting into me motor and trundling up & down the M4!! :eyebrows:

if you wish I could pick it up for you and meet you half way I am pretty close to uxbridge

Oooo - you kind and generous tempter, John!

You come along the M4 on a regular basis? Where to?

Oooo - tempted!!

Hmmm ... auction ends today, and he's already reduced the price once, I think ... if it comes down £250 ...

No I do not but if you willing to pay for petrol then I think its worth a punt

Ah - OK, thanks John. But once I'm on the M4 I may as well go the whole way!

I'm just being a lazy git - if he re-lists it for £250 I'll probably snaffle it and collect it myself, I reckon, the £50 reduction will pay for the petrol!

I see on t'internet that some folks have had speed problems with Kenwood dd's - yours has been AOK?

No problems with speed on mine.
I put a funk mat on it, and reckon it benefitted from being on Mana.
Even at £295 it's a total bargain.
Except when it goes wrong I guess.. but the build quality is superb.

Thanks Steve and John. :)

Any views on how it compares with a standard Techie 1210, or other tables come to that?

I've a nice Pioneer PL600X and am a bit concerned that I'm just getting a bit carried away with boxswap mania! ... A certain D Price rather liked my current 'table - http://twitpic.com/duwnc

Well.. It was night and day with my norton airpowered sondek lp12.
I was quite shocked actually.
Marco and I had a plan to get it across to his place just never got round to it.
Shuggie replaced it with a thorens, but he had got the arm rewired by Johnie.

I suspect it would compete very well with a technics, but can't say for sure.
All I know is that it out performs my ikemi as a transport into a Lyngdorf 2200+

Very quiet surface noise, great dynamics, soundstage etc etc have no desire to change.

Ah well, an LP12 and an Ikemi - not a lot of competition there, then! ;)

:peace:

Thanks for the comments, Steve. :)

I must confess that I am quite tempted by this eBay listing, too ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sansui-SR-838-Direct-Drive-Turntable-Pickering-XSV-3000-Cartridge-/230695542745?_trksid=p3286.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3D LVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D4139596229840674335
A lovely looking heavyweight Sansui DD.

That was my low-ball offer you can see on the listing - sadly ignored. :( :eyebrows: I might try again.

I think the asking prices for these DD's is very optimistic. Also I suspect the condition is less than ex in the flesh and there may be issues with electronics that the owners (who have probably neglected them for years) are ignorant off. Sansui and such like are probably close to unservicable. It was only Lo7D's, Sp10's top Sony's and the like that were realy expensive new. I would research the new price and not pay more than half it's cost 30 years ago. The pricing of even Thorens (whiich are easily fettled and repaired) makes my eyes water. Seeing 160S prices especially when I paid less than £120 new 30 years ago and traded it in for a song 10 years later.

yes, I know what you mean about optimistic pricing - hence my 'lowball' offer - but these decks do sound pretty good - I've had a few over the years. And they can look lovely!!

Jerry,

If the KD-750 is in full working order (including the arm) and the cosmetics are within the boundaries that you feel are acceptable, then my opinion is that you'll find few turntables better at £250.

I've recently started spinning a KD-650, which has the same motor, bearings and tonearm but a different plinth. Coincidentally, I'm using a 10x5, also. I'm chuffed with mine and the sonics are good enough to warrant the risk of electronic failure from thirty year old components. I'm confident that the plinth, platter and motor would to rise to the challenge of a new arm at some point in the future, should that be the way things develop.

Pictures, if you're interested, are in my gallery.

I agree with camtwister. I bought a KD-750 a few months ago for the cost of a few pints.... It was in terrible shape and was unable to achieve quartz lock in 33 or 45. Not to mention it was horribly corroded....

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa165/71BMW2002/Kenwood%20KD%20750/KD-750-002.jpg

After a few months of tinkering that included, a full recap, the replacement of the quad op-amp, and the replacement of the primary voltage regulation IC, I now have a one excellent turntable. It has replaced my modified 1200 M3D for the time being as it added a degree of clarity to high frequency end of the spectrum. The difference was not huge when compared to my modified 1200, but it is certainly way better then the non modified 1200 that I have in bedroom.

Here it is during testing:

I am planning to go back to my Technics 1200 as I recently built a new power supply for it and it is easier to cue a record manually because the the 750's platter is so large that it gets in the way.

Hello Michael (audioquiz),
I see you've been a member of AoS for a few months but have not done an awful lot of posting. However, when you joined you were politely asked to go to the Welcome section in order to make an introductory post.
This is still required, so if you could do that as the first order of business the next time you log on here, that would be all of the housekeeping in order.
To tell us about yourself, your system and your music is the best way to be sure of a warm welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Could you please do the same, KC.

Watched two KD-990's go on eBay for £200 recently, that looked a good deck for the ££. :)

I've got a couple of KD-990's and can say they definitely sound good to my ears. They differ from the 750 in that they have a fairly hefty skeletal plinth beneath all that black wood.

I think it was the trend a few years ago to strip the external plinth away and leaving the skeletal plinth on show. Tempted to do it with one of mine but the blasted thing has now got some weird speed issues and won't hold a steady speed. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Mike

No idea i am afraid, that is the one thing i was told when looking at the 990, speed issues.
