Tube rolling how to evaluate for best sound

Having bought a new phono stage im looking at trying some nos vales,

It uses three valves e88cc x2 and 6587 x1,

now would i evaluate all three togeather, or try the right and left e88cc

seperatly from the 6587, how long should i try them for if they are nos,

Would nos valves change sound with time, and i suppose what ever you try

for i evaluation you should try for another to treat alike, does anyone have

a system for evaluation of valves/tubes.

Everything is down to the listener, make your own mind up at the end of the day. You could be pointed in the right drection from someone you know who also likes something similar, but when it comes down to it make up your own mind on what is best for you...

There is no right & wrong, it's all just opinions :eyebrows:

I would think measuring is only of real value if you had a baseline of what the valve was supposed to measure new, provided it was within the generally accepted good range of a valve tester. In a dual valve, if the sides have a great disparity than that's one thing. Corrections welcome. And, generally, I also agree with "sounds bad, is bad".

Otherwise, a windstorm in your speakers, static, loud transient pops/clicks and of course the catastrophic meltdown of associated gear caused by exploding valves showering the carpet and drapery with glass shards and sparks ingniting the house and surrounding neighborhood are pretty good signs that valves might need to be rolled. :lol:

Having tried a load of nos valves ive decided on these three,

Amperex e88cc special quality x2 also raytheon 5687 jrp x1,

There were a few e88cc valves that were microphonic from new,

Also a few e88cc that became noisy after a while ,

I have three pairs of e88cc that are quiet ,

brimar cv2492
amperex sq
tesla

So i can recomend these they all sound nice but the amperex is best in my

system

The 'small' valves - ec88 will take about 100 hours of use before they sound consistent, and the bigger valves - EL 34's etc, about 200 hours.

Don't decide before then.
