No, not his 1994 2.0 CD with 135k on the clock, his Omega De Ville Co-axial Rattrapante donated to Children in Need on the Jonathan Ross show (his last). New it's a £6,100 timepiece of the finest quality, currently standing at £21,000.01. Lovely watch, I love Omegas, in fact I'd rather have that on my arm than any of the Bond girls!

Have a butchers at this! (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230306334352&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=013)

Hmmm. I'd rather save my money and settle for Mrs B :) I just can't imagine what it'd be like putting a bid of £21k on eBay. I'd rather buy me a garage for all me kit!

Granted there are more interesting ways to spend the money, but for the man who has everything, it's ideal. :)

It's ok, but where are the numbers? And for that price I'd expect a digital display as well

Hi Guys

£6000 for a watch, and some complain about the cost of audio.

Now if it was a classic antique watch or clock, maybe I would consider spending that kind of dough. Is this likely to gain in value ? Say like a Cartier from the 1920's. Sorry but I am not convinced that any modern watch is worth that. The mark up is probably ridiculous.

You'd be surprised, I'm currently looking at a fully refurbed 1984 Omega Speedmaster Mk5 from an Australian dealer I know. He's asking for £1,495 with 2 years Omega AD International Warranty, a lot more than it cost originally and a snip for what it is. They do hold their value very well and go up if maintained properly. Mind you, it is gorgeous and beautiful (if you like that sort of thing). I'll pop some pictures up in a mo.

Hi guys

Nice Watches I just could not justify this sort of money. I suppose it depends on what you are into. I collect Antique oil lamps and some of those are worth big money.

Anyway if the hi-fi industry was as well run as the watch industry(something Ken Kessler has said on many occasions)then we would be looking at a vastly more healthy business. Any comments ?

There is an upmarket jewellery shop in Belfast called Lunns and they have some display in their window of up-market watches and some vintage ones Cartier and the like but as nice as they are I still would not buy them(if I had that kind of dosh). Do people buy modern watches as an investment. I just assumed (wrongly) that they did not go up in value. Pity Hi-Fi isn't like that.

Hmm. I've been wearing the same watch for 15 years, like most folks I guess. I love mine, and like you couldn't justify spending more money than it'd take to get it fixed if anything ever happened.

When I got my Nagra, we (wife and I) justified it in part as an investment. They have stacks of residual value and hold their prices very well. Even accessories are highly sought after, regardless of condition often. That said, I have always considered Kudelski (Nagra) to be the watch-makers of audio equipment. The machining and engineering is precision stuff, and the result a work of art.

The only people who ever made money from Hi-Fi are the folks in Finland who bought up the liquidated stocks of Sony's Elcaset for $100 a throw in 1983, only to auction them on eBay in 2008 for upwards of $400. Curse them. And the ones who bought packs of 12 tapes for $20 and are selling them for $30 each* :violin:

* Note to wife: I really didn't spend that much on the tapes I got. They were honestly a very good deal. I do occasionally get lucky on eBay

Nagra is very nice stuff. I would love one of their Reel to Reel decks. Pure magic

In that regard hi-fi is like cars, only very rare and sought after pieces retain full+more value, everything else sinks like a stone. :( It's a pleasure thing though, financial return surely comes in second or lower.

Hi

I agree with you but I guess this only applies if you have a well matched set up. Those who end up with, upgrade twitching, who end up loosing a fortune on trade ins etc must deeply regret(understatement) that they don't loose less on their past pride and joys. The value(pleasure) is in the many hours of listening and exploration one does with old and new music. It is however a pity that so much money is lost in this way.

From my perspective as some one who has an interest in antiques the idea that anything modern can hold or indeed gain in value (watches), came as a bit of a surprise. I would happily spend big money on antiques as they mostly(sometimes not) go up in value. A good and safe investment(if you know what you are doing), in the past. However in these days nothing is a safe investment.

I've got a Speedmaster that I've worn every day for years (with a round silver faced, & a bit newer than this one). I paid ~£1000 for it & never regretted a penny.

One advantage of having a decent Swiss watch I heard told years ago was that no matter where you are in the world and whatever happens you can always get home because it's as good as having a wad of cash strapped to your arm.

By the way, the Speedmaster is the only wristwatch that's ever been on the moon! - Omega made a habit of presenting them to all the astronauts.

TGW; Is yours the 3570.50 manual wind with the Hesalite and closed back? There were some with sapphire crystal and an open back to view the movement (the 3573.50) but they didn't contain the c.861 movement as used on the moon and so are not actually a Speedmaster Professional. The Mk3 and Mk4 guises of the Speedmaster are also neither c.861 (they have the c.1040) or Moon watches, the Mk1 -known as the moon watch rather than the Mk1 - and the Mk2 both have the original .861 but the Mk2 never went on space missions as it wasn't certified by NASA. The Speedmaster Mk5 has a c.1045 movement which is marked as so, but Omega also produced some Mk5s with the hand wound c.861 although these are officially not Speedmasters. There is understandably much confusion throughout the Speedmaster range, especially as Omega released different models only in certain parts of the world - as these move between continents and the hands of collectors it all gets a bit vague, but the truth is ascertainable if one searches enough.

I've been into watches for many moons (pardon the pun) and the Omegas are very nice indeed, and as suggested, internationally recognised as pieces of quality. Will I become a collector? Probably not as a watch collection just ties up too much money, but I'll grab a few. At the moment I have a Breitling Navitimer, a Fortis R7 Fliegeruhr, a Seiko Flightmaster and a J.Springs flyback that I bought late one night online whilst drunk - luckily it was only £35!

They're a little on the pricey side, but possibly the finest engineered watches in the world.

Awesome...
One day ...One day. (or maybe their Fleiger with the steel bracelet)

Anyway...here is mine. A few others in boxes that get little wear, but difficult to let go !!
This is an Omega Speedmaster 57. Basically the same movement as todays Speedmaster with retro face and hand that pre-dated the Moonwatch, and first came out in 1957. The year I was born.

That's cool Steve, lovely watch and nice that it's the same year as your birth. I'm not sure yet what 1976 watch I'd like - in honesty a lot of them are a bit weird and very 'seventies' if that makes sense - however I do like the Rado Manhattan but I'm not sure if they were in production in '76. Still, lots to search through and lots of vintage watches available all over the place, and no hurry of course.

Rado Manhattan:

But of course, let's not forget the weird and the wonderful vintage watches out there; if one has time to search almost anything can be found. How about a simply gorgeous and insanely genuinely retro Philip Spaceman Audacieuse Automatic?:
