Hello from Bolton

Hello all, I've been looking at AoS for sometime now (whenever I want a more learned point of view) and thought it about time I introduced myself.

First, I love music and I love vinyl.
I've been collecting records since being a teen but only recently (the last 5 years or so) took seriously the hardware side of things.
My short 'hifi' journey began in earnest earlier this year when a pair of Quad ESL 57s replaced my Rega bookshelf speakers, and now I'm totally besotted with this mad game. A Michelle Orbe SE soon replaced a Rega P25, followed by a Terminator T3Pro arm. Currently looking into phonostages and SUTs.

Secondly, there is another user on this forum whose moniker is/was 'zero technical knowledge'. Well that's a fitting desription for me as well! Seriously, I'm clueless. Last July, Vic at Transfiaudio was good enough to personally fit my cartridge to the TPro and then the arm to my turntable. He patiently showed me how to operate the arm (what a great and generous guy). I smiled and nodded for an hour or so (also fell off his chair a couple of times). By the time I'd driven home I had forgotten just about everything that I had been shown - only plucked up the courage to have a play this October (the arm is way easier to operate than I had supposed). Like I said, utter DIY numpty! (see also my contribution to the 'so tell us about your username' thread).

Musical tastes - anything that sounds good.

Apart from the Quads & the turntable/arm what else is in your system and what sort of music do you like?

Oh it's all a terrible mess, but since you ask...

Amps - was using a Sugden A21a (series 1) integrated; bought a Quad 909 this week so will be using the Sugden as a pre (not tried it yet because my speaker cable terminals won't fit into the Quad 909).

Phono - Dynavector P75 mkII in 'Dr.T' mode but will be trialling a Graham Slee Revelation/Elevator combo this weekend along with a PS Audio GCPH. Only one can stay.

Carts - ZYX R-50 and Dynavector DV XXII mkII (both lowish output MC)

Subwoofer - Gallo Acoustics TR2

Speaker cables (do they matter?) - Townshend Isoldas and Ecosse (can't remember the type).
Interconnects - Ecosse and Mogami

CDp - Rega Apollo.

Are you able to limit the output voltage swing of the 909, so as to protect the 57s?

Is the DV XXII design the one with the coil/magnets arranged at 45 deg to the groove, mimicking the geometry of the cutter head (also used by the Allnic Verito MC)?

Many would say they do, and some can get quite passionate about it!

Hi Barry, how do I limit the 909s output? I have the protective clamps fitted to my 57's but I understand that these can fail if overdriven for too long (how long?) I usually listen at sensible levels but since installing the 909 I've enjoyed turning the wick up for a quick blast :eyebrows:

Hi Chang,

Well if it doesn't say in the user operating instructions, then I assume the output of the 909 cannot be voltage limited.

I wouldn't worry too much about the protective clamps failing. It sounds as though they use a varistor device, which will ultimately fail if asked to operate too frequently (the attrition is cumulative). However knowing Quad, they would have designed the clamp to have a long life.



Apropos the cartridge, I was thinking of one of these (the Dynavector XV1t):

I have no experience of cartridges following this design pattern, but the fact that the generator geometry follows, or mimics, that of the cutter head interests me.
