Krell KRC-3 pre-amp - any thoughts / opinions?

Wondering if this would be an interesting and worthwhile pre-amp to buy. :scratch:

Anyone have experience of it? :)

My mate Richard went over to Krell and Apogee (now Martin Logan Discovery's I think) a long time ago and in his then system, the KRC-3 allowed the nuances and spatial aspects of recordings to come through very well. I believe he left it powered up most of the time, although I think it was the CD player that really needed warm-up time, as many TDA1541 based players seem to as I recall (and experience with mine).

If the price is good I'd certainly consider it I think (that'll put you off no doubt :lol:) but I do have to balance that with saying that I've never compared it with anything else, only hearing it in isolation... but it did seem to do the job and not interfere overmuch...

It may not bother you Jerry but they run incredibly hot for a pre amp, in fact I can think of loads of power amps that run cooler under normal operation :lol:

A fine pre amp indeed, just runs hot as hell & no doubt as a consequence will eat loads of electricity compared to just about any other ;)

Obviously due to this you'll need adequate ventilation around the thing :eyebrows:

Yep, Mark, the Krell KPS25s CD playing thingy I had for too brief a time got pretty warm, and that had a similar pre-amp section tucked away inside.

Looks like my planned turntable change/upgrade(?) will be delayed a bit.

Hot running gear MAY mean new caps after twenty years or so of running. Since these latter are cheap in the wide scheme of things and higher temperature ones can also be got now, may be worth having a look under the cover - some nice piccies would be VERY much appreciated :)
