Excel alternative?

Hello good people :)

I have an XLS file that I need to use & I don't happen to have Microsoft Excel & I certainly do not want to pay for it to run a single spreadsheet manipulation :eyebrows:

So, does anyone know of a decent free program that will allow me to get some important work done?

I would check out Libreoffice first:

There you get all you need in an office suite.

Another great spreadsheet application is Gnumeric. This is very fast and flexible:

As it happens though an extremely generous member of this forum is sending me a genuine copy of Windows Office along with the activation code :wowzer:

I am using Libre Office, as mentioned. It is very good and best of all free! :)

I use both OpenOffice and LibreOffice. Both free and excellent with little to choose between them. Both allow direct saving to PDF which can useful (which MS Office doesn't - or at least didn't last time I used it about 5 years ago...)

I've had nothing but problems with open office lately ...

I do t suppose anyone knows if it will work with xls files with macros in do they (I think I mean macros??)

As I understand it, Open Office got "sucked up by some big boys" and the guys that started the whole shebang "took their toothbrush and comb" and started Libre Office; therefore, making it the natural progression rather than wherever Open Office is at right now, or where it will wind up. But, that's just what I've heard. :)

Found an un-opened disc from when I bought this PC back in 2005, Microsoft Works ;) A little checking indicated it has a program called Spreadsheet, which is all I actually needed...

I would be a little cautious about getting too involved in Microsoft Works Mark :eyebrows:
Unless things have changed you’ll find word processed docs in Works can’t be read by Microsoft Word which is pretty much the standard. Open Office apps are compatible with Microsoft Orifice.
I don’t know if you’ll encounter problems with spreadsheets in Works but better safe perhaps and use Open Office or Microsoft Orifice for all.

It is better than open office and is exactly the same as Microsoft.
libreoffice gets my vote.

John, it's ok m8 ;) I just wanted to use the spreadsheet program & it does exactly what i wanted it to do.

I'm not sure if I can tell you what that is though, or I might have to silence myself permanently :lol:
