This looks interesting to me.

I have to confess that when I first saw the listing I thought it was the whole Garrard 401 with 12 inch SME arm up for sale at £320. I was just about to hit the Buy It Now button in my fevered excitement. :eyebrows:

But no, 'just' the plinth. Seems to me though to be a very interesting suspended design at a very fair price.

Any thoughts, gents?

It does look very nice. Are you thinking of having a play with idlers?
As an alternative you may be able to get a slate plinth for that sort of money.

I'm just a touch concerned that the 401 is sprung, but the arm isn't, suggesting merely that any disturbance could cause skipping and low frequency "wobble" into the speakers...

Years ago, an early super-plinth was made up using a conventional but solid outer frame, with a cut-to-size paving slab clothed in plywood to carry the deck and arm. This was then sited on two parallel strips of chair-webbing, one each side and back to front in the frame and I remember the results were excellent, the 401's noises around 10db quieter (but still 25db worse than a TD125 or modern-day Techie ).

Ah. Good thought! That could be a recipe for disaster, couldn't it. The plinth itself would have to be carefully isolated. Sort of a tower principle, like Mana supports, perhaps.

Yes, I too am surprised to see that the sprung suspension acts between the platter and the arm.

Like David I be worried about it being suspended

I think Loicroft will supply you with the 601 plinth
Also I myself would go for the below plinth

If you're willing to put a chassis into a boughten plinth, Jerry, then a Lenco becomes a possibility again - and for a lot less than a Garrard.
There's someone in Holland who'll do you a 10 kg+, 6 layer, birch ply jobbie for 120 Euros.

It looks nice but functionality wise not perfect I suspect, Mr Collinson (http://www.layers-of-beauty.co.uk/page7.php)is the defacto plinth maker for me at least and then of course there is Dominic's slate plinth (http://northwestanalogue.weebly.com/) if you have the money, I spoke to Adam (beobloke) at the whittlebury show, very nice bloke in fact and he said Dominics plinth is exceptionally good.
