Hi, I'm Gerard in Ellenbrook near Worsley Greater Manchester. Some of you may know me a 'gerard' on Pink Fish.

My main musical interest is classic Rock music from the 60s/70s/80s and I do like a fair bit of Prog - my tastes however are pretty catholic as long as in the late great Bill Hick's words 'its played from the 'insert appropriate swear word' Heart'

My kit is Thorens TD124 Mk II / SME 3009 Series II improved / Denon DL110,
Rega Saturn Cd Player, Densen Beat 100 MK V integrated, Totem Hawk Loudspeakers.

I have a passion for owning music in the physical format (mostly vinyl), downloads just don't cut it with me.

Of late I find myself buying more music than ever (6 new vinyl lps this week)

Are you using the black-tack on the SME shell? All those holes will cause problems with the DL110 if you don't, since this arm really was designed for high compliance mm types... At least you have the option to fit more solid headshells......

Are you using the black-tack on the SME shell? All those holes will cause problems with the DL110 if you don't, since this arm really was designed for high compliance mm types... At least you have the option to fit more solid headshells......

What is Black Tack?

I am not aware that I am experiencing any problems with the DL110

Back in the early 80's, when higher mass rigid arms came into fashion, the 3009 "improved" arms were measured and judged too resonant. The headshell was judged too light and there were voids between the top of the cartridge, the finger lift and the headshell itself. SME supplied some blac-tack like substance (I have some in SME packaging) that they supplied to "fix" this. The shell doesn't sound "tinkly" with this stuff in situ as it does without and even higher compliance models seem to sound smoother and sweeter toned (the V15 III sounds far better to me this way.....). That's why i mentioned it, 'cos the Dl110 is fairly low in compliance and may just "drive" the arm more, that's all...

Thanks, that's just what I've been looking for, for some time now.

Yes, I suppose three 124/II decks is a bit greedy. One of them is 40 years old, the other two are more recent acquisitions. I like to experiment with different cartridges and arms, so it is useful to have at least two decks.

I'm also an admirer of SME arms (and have four of them). I believe the Blu-Tack like substance is still available from SME, but like all things SME, will probably be quite expensive. Just use some ordinary Blu-Tack, it will be much cheaper and probably just as effective.

Or are you 'contravening the laws of physics' to artificially reduce the age of 2 of your 124s (sorry just read 2 of Steven Hawkins books) I guess this would involve flying 2 of them away from the earth at close to the speed of light and then returning them.

Not really into it anymore, but have very fond memories of listening to: King Crimson, Soft Machine, Van Der Graf Generator, Peter Hamil, Tangerine Dream/Edgar Froese, and the occassional avant-garde jazz w/ a mate who was well-ahead of his time (picture Marantz receiver, Utah speakers, Philips t-table, bead curtains, MC Escher prints...) - You get the idea. Anyways, Best and Welcome!

Got lots of King Crimson, Some T.D, just picked up a Soft Machine box set and discovering them for the first time also had a little listen to VDGG on spotify a few times.

I serviced the 124 for Gerard, set up the arm and fitted the Denon.
Gerard has the removable headshell 3009 Imp. The Denon works a treat in this arm. Fitting a better headshell may improve matters, but on hearing his system, it was sounding so good it seems a shame to upset things.
