I have read about the use of 1mil styli for older Mono Lps and intend to get one for my Nagaoka, but with my ‘Rek-o-Kut Arcival Elliptical Stylus Kit’ came a 2mil stylus marked as for use with ‘worn LPs, some transcriptions’.

OK for the transcriptions (haven’t got any) but have any of you ever used a 2mil on a worn LP & under what circumstances? I am afeared of doing damage & so far have never used it.

I vaguely remember using them on records that were given to me by a DJ. The grooves were widened out on the records due to all that playing and back tracking. The narrower stylus could hardly pick up any info, which is why I had to use a wider one. I think it was a Stanton cartridge/stylus combination tracking at a horrendous 5gm instead or the more common 1.5 to 3gm.

Right, so it would be for VERY worn records only, then.

That is what I would suggest, unless anyone else can offer an alternative scenario. The wider tip will widen out a narrow groove, and even more so if you use a heavy tracking force.
