Hi Trevor,

as it happens, there was another member who asked more or less the same question about three weeks ago. He picked a TC-7520SEG up from me to use it for mainly playing games and listening to the audio through headphones. He sent me a very nice email to say he had a big smile on his face:) from the moment the credits started rolling on the first game he tried the DAC on.

hi stanley, can you recommend any headphones that are a good sonic match and does the ohms on the headphones dictate if i need a seperate amp

If you wish to buy a separate headphone amp then I suggest that you forget a DAC and just buy a headamp :).
As for headphones: there are loads of headphone reviews that are aimed at gamers. You can use anything between 25 to 300 Ohms with the Caiman. Just get the type of cans you feel happy with in terms of bass etc. The Denon D7000 would be my first choice, but that's OTT.

The CD you require for this is 'Wait a While' by the Patience Brothers

hi stanley i am still none the wiser as to which headphones to match with the caiman really hard to find anywhere local to audition any

It will work with anything between 25 ohms to 300 ohms. So just which one you decide to buy is purely down to your budget and listening style. See the head-fi forum for a wide range of users feedback on headphones and their signature. Then pick out of that one that matches your listening style.

As long as you have a digital output and the correct cable for either coax or optical (should in theory be a "proper" digital coax cable with 75ohm RCA plugs, or an optical "Toslink" cable) then yes - depends on what your CD player is, but will likely be a good improvement to most budget/mid priced spinners out there. Works a treat for Sky TV or PS3 too (optical only on those I think) DVD players, etc.

EDIT: Just checked and your CD player has both types of output - so your choice, really - arguments for and against either method, but I've never been able to tell the difference if I'm honest.

can this be used with turntable through my preamp

um, no, although not exactly sure where your question is leading? The clue is in the name - Digital to Analogue - your turntable is already analogue! ;)

It's not impossible, but does require a few additional items. I did a topic on that a year or more ago. But that gave me the idea to make a phono preamp that could be used with a DAC. Still work in progress I am afraid. The first prototype worked out to be far more expensive than the average TT user might want to spend. But the project has not been abandoned. After hearing it in operation with my own TT I am convinced that it is a desirable solution.
