Just in from RedSpark Music:

Pink Floyd start their EMI reissue with Dark Side Of The Moon on vinyl. Meanwhile, Analogue Productions issue Wish You Were Here on SACD and great things are expected.

This is great news as WYWH has never been well represented on digital media until now. I'm getting my order in.

I'd love to get a few of my favourite albums on SACD but I don't have anything to play them on. A standalone player would probably be best but could a DVD player that plays SACD be a cheaper choice?

What would it do for sound quality though?

I don't have a lot of cash to spare at the moment so can't really afford to pay too much to get into it. :)

Surely there are plenty of used SACD players on eBay? Sony XB790 (?) I seem to remember being a good one.

Be wary of DVD players that support SACD: many of them take the precious 1-bit DSD encoding, convert to 16-bit or 24-bit and run it through the standard DAC. You won't get the best from SACD that way, but it could still be worth the bother.

I use a Marantz SA7001 KI SACD player - last 2nd hand one went on eBay for £140. (He mentioned he paid £300 but this was originally a £700 player.) Just be aware though that you will only get 2 channel stereo - if you want all the surround sound malarky then look elsewhere. I was thinking of selling my black one, but if I'm only going to get £140 I won't bother! (Used as a CD transport for the last 2 years, a standalone CD player too, and I really like it, but then I always have liked the KI Sig players, unlike some on here, so YMMV. :))

How about the Sony SCD-XE800 if you want an inexpensive new player?

yes don't go for a SACD capable DVD player as they do not give the full benefit of SACD.
Even the budget Sony CD/SACD players are way better

The Denon Universal players do true DSD decoding. A decent SACD at least beats DVDA for sound IMO. I picked up a minty 2900 for £70. At least you can play the new King Crimson re-issues in hi-res (24/96) as well as SACD releases.

:stalks: that's an extremely good price for a 2900. Well done!

Yes I'll back that up to :) My Denon 2930 does a superb job with SACDs, just a pity I didn't have more of them ;)

Well here's your chance! I mean, WYWH - it's been a long time coming.

Martin the salesman :eyebrows:

It wouldn't be the first thing I'd purchase in all honesty, the price kind of puts me off a bit to ;)

Me, salesman? LOL, If only you knew what I thought of some salesmen when I used to work with them!

I guess I just want the SACD medium to continue and it certainly needs all the support we can muster. It is the best digital format I know (with DVD-A coming a close second).

I just don't want to pay a fortune for a dedicated player when I might end up with only half a dozen SACDs. Most of my listening these days is either vinyl or Squeezebox Touch. I just wanted to experience SACD and make up my own mind on it.

I'll look at the options and see what I can sort. Thanks for the feedback guys. :)

The SACD has just arrived. Guess what's going in the Ayre tonight! :ner:

It sounds fantastic. The clincher is the resolution and sheer realism of the acoustic guitar intro to the title track. The soundstage is well defined and the bass on Welcome to the Machine is simply awesome. This is so good that I'm going to have to buy DSOTM and Animals SACDs in the same series.

Correction: there are no other SACDs in the Analogue Productions series yet :(

l posted a while ago regarding thoughts on this player, found virtually nothing on the web, except for one review saying it was awesome for the outlay, but l did not put the page into me favourites:doh:, but for £150 may give it a go anyway.
