Avery intersting and unusual bloke was Jimmy. 84 is agood innings still a shame to see him go. I'll never forget the last ever TOTP where at the end he went back of the soundstage and turned the lights off, shaking his head as he did so.

And he invented Bling.

Having met him on several occasions when a patient at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, yes a great fundraiser but I can confirm that he was a very, very strange man.

TBH, a visit from Jimmy was often the last thing folks needed while dealing with the reality of a spinal injury, but we did appreciate the facilities!

My mother was in the new-block ICU at Stoke Mandeville and one evening, when dad and I were there, Jimmy came along to give his best wishes, as he often did to the patients. I thought it was kind of him to bother, but some of the nurses were less enthusiastic, as reportedly he "knew" he'd raised lots of money for the place and expected to be treated accordingly. In many ways though, I suspect it was because he was a blunt Yorkshireman who wouldn't suffer fools gladly and he'd have gained my respect and thanks in any case.
