Squeezebox system

I've got an SB3 and a Squeezebox Boom, and I've downloaded SqueezePad for my iPad. I'm sure there are (fairly) compatible software systems which I could run on my PCs and Macs around the house. Not sure if they're all from or authorised by Logitech, but right now not too bothered.

Does anyone have any recommendations for PC or Mac compatible sopftware players?

I have tested running several different tracks to different machines already, using the Squeezepad interface - seems to work fine.

For example, we have a fairly remote PC in a back office. Actually currently it's not quite on the network (now has a separate internet feed and ISP), but I'm working on getting the network reconfigured so that the two distinct LANs will merge back into one big LAN. When that's done, it'd be good if we could run a software player on the PC which would pick up the music stored on my Squeezebox/iTunes server. That way I wouldn't have to rip the CDs again for a different system.

I'd prefer to go the Squeezebox route, though as my ripping process now uses iTunes, and I've (hopefully) unified the folders/directories so that the tracks can be played either with Squeezebox compatible players, or iTunes compatible ones, then it may not matter so much. However the flexibility of being able to control several different Squeezebox players remotely from my iPad is definitely worth having, so if there are compatible players which can function as virtual Squeezeboxes for either SqueezePad or iPeng, then that'd be good for us. I'm looking for solutions for both PCs and Macs.

It turns a Windows, OSX or Linux computer into a Squeezebox.

The the only thing this software emulator won't do is sync with a hardware Squeezebox - so if you have a hardware Squeezebox in one room and Squeezeplay playing the same stream in the next room, there is no guarantee they will sound together.

Obviously the audio quality is limited by the soundcard - unless you can connect an external DAC by USB or S/PDIF.

Thanks for this Brian. Tested on iMac. Not a great interface compared with iPeng or SqueezePad, but does work. One problem this doesn't solve is connecting my two LANs together. It seems that one router has such a basic locked down interface that I can't change the subnet mask to merge the networks.

Thus of limited.use at present, but good to know about.

Hi Dave, I have my SqueezeboxCenter/Server running on a NAS (QNAP TS-119) along with my FLAC library, this serves 4 SBs (2 receivers, an SB3, and a Boom).

I also access the same FLAC library from my PC in the study, mapped as a network drive, this is referenced by Winamp (or the player of your choice that allows a configurable library source).

I did try squeezeplay, but to be honest all it does is put additional load on the SB Server, and when I'm in the study I don't need to synchronise with any of my SBs so it's stand alone. It also allows me to control the drivers (ASIO) and buffer sizes etc.

The additional advantage is that I can create drag and drop Winamp playlists from the same FLAC library very quickly (this can be a slow process via the SB interface), and with a little editing they can be ported over to the SB server and used for the rest of my SB system as they are both m3u files.

But this does obviously require them to be on the same network...:)
